Zurg is the main antagonist of Pixar's 26th full-length animated feature film Lightyear, a Toy Story spin-off prequel film centered on Buzz Lightyear's origin story.
He is a galactic warlord who is in search of the hyperspace fuel from his archenemy Buzz Lightyear. During the film's climax, it turns out that Zurg is an alternative future self of Buzz Lightyear, who went back in time to finish his mission and be a hero again. He then became in conflict with his past self from the Galactic Alliance, who opposes him and his plans to complete the mission.
He was voiced by James Brolin.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- After travelling to the distant future, he hijacked an abandoned ship, using its technology to reprogram a massive army of powerful robots known as the Zyclops, and adopted the name Zurg, as the Zyclops can only pronounce him as such.
- He then modified a machine that will allow the vessel to time travel as long as it is powered up by the hyperspace fuel.
- After discovering Buzz's presence, he sent several Zyclops to track him and his team down, some of which would attack the colony and force it to protect against all outsiders.
- Eventually, one of the Zyclops was able to nab the fuel while Zurg himself captured Buzz.
- He conquered and/or destroyed various worlds and planets through the years.
- He was willing to go back in time to undo his mistake and get to live the 89 years he wasted on hyperspace testing, not even getting to appreciate his fellow comrades even more despite being warned by his past counterpart that this will erase anyone who had been born since they arrived on the planet, but he didn't care and was willing to do so anyway.
- When Buzz mentioned his former commander and late best friend, Alisha Hawthorne, wouldn't have her family, Zurg apathetically stated she won't miss anyone she doesn't remember.
- He killed his own personal Sox for rebelling against his orders and engaged in a fight against Buzz, swearing to kill him for his refusal.
- What's even worse is that he destroyed one of the few memorable things he has left of Alisha, who gave him Sox to help him, and showed no remorse for it, completely disregarding what he has left of his best friend, even declaring his Sox a traitor.
- After his ship got destroyed, he survived the explosion and attacked Buzz while stealing the fuel, and after declaring that he can still use the fuel to go back in time, Zurg prepares to kill Buzz with a single blast.
- Unlike the other versions of Zurg, he is a ruthless psychopath who is taken seriously all the time aside from being tranquilized by future Sox, but this scene is extremely brief and only happens for a second, so it doesn’t detract from his evilness.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He has a tragic background, due to wanting to fix his mistake at all costs after he was nearly arrested by Commander Burnside's forces. It's clear that unlike his past counterpart, Zurg was not able to let go of the guilt that he got his crew stranded, with it serving as the driving force behind his actions.
- His goal is still fundamentally based on wanting to fix his past mistake, and while there is an element of selfishness to his goal, it is still enough to make him somewhat of an extremist wanting to get more time to appreciate his friends and live good lives with them.
Trivia[]
- Only the Lightyear version of Zurg counts as Near Pure Evil, as the Emperor Zurg toys seen in the Toy Story films aren't taken seriously and are much less evil than Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear, the only toy Pure Evil of the franchise, and his Buzz Lightyear of Star Command version doesn't count either as he is too comedic for the criteria, in addition to failing to stand out against the Evil Buzz Lightyear and NOS-4-A2.
- Since he is Near Pure Evil, he serves as a foil to his present counterpart, who is Near Pure Good.
