Zavok is a major antagonist in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
He is the leader of the Deadly Six who is cold, calculating, and sadistic, having been trained by Master Zik as his last disciple.
He was voiced by Jouji Nakata in Japanese. In English, he was voiced by Travis Willingham in Sonic Lost World and Sonic Forces (who also has several other roles like Paul De Pleur and Hypnobot) but by Patrick Seitz in Team Sonic Racing onwards. The latter also voiced Lyric the Last Ancient.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- While he was enslaved by Dr. Eggman along with the other members of the Deadly Six and abused, this doesn’t make him tragic, as he outright tries to destroy the world in revenge, which has nothing to do with this situation. Additionally, even though Sonic liberated the Zeti from Eggman, he still fights the hedgehog and develops a grudge against him as well for defeating them, showing he has no sense of gratitude.
- While trying to destroy Earth is a common act in the franchise, Zavok stands out for not only attempting it twice, but his attempts at destroying it being more brutal than a majority of the other villains in the franchise.
- Out of all the Deadly Six, he is devoid of any humorous quirks (Zazz's manic hyperactivity, Zommon's dim and gluttonous nature, Zeena's vanity, and Zor's pessimism). Initially treating him like he would any other enemy, Sonic starts taking Zavok, and his group by extension, seriously as a genuine threat when his friends become affected by his actions.
Games[]
- Upon being released from Eggman's control by Sonic’s recklessness, he proceeded to immediately turn his own robots against him in his attempt to wipe out him, Sonic, and their allies.
- Throughout the game, he and the other members of the Deadly Six attempted to kill Sonic multiple times.
- He used Eggman's world draining machine to slowly drain Earth of all its life, something which is shown to have clear effects, as seen by Amy being on the verge of death in her messages to Sonic.
- He used a capsule to attempt to capture Sonic, and when it winded up catching Tails instead, he used that to his advantage and turns him into a cyborg.
- When he encountered Sonic for one of the final times, he attempted to use the roboticized Tails to kill him, showing clear sadism in Sonic having to fight against his own best friend. Unfortunately, this backfired as Tails managed to override the robotism.
- Helped Eggman try and steal Dodon Pa's Ultimate Energy Engine, even kidnapping the Tanooki.
- While he does help Eggman with his plans in Team Sonic Racing despite hating him, he likely only did this just to get rid of Sonic once and for all. He once even made a subtle threat towards the doctor for downgrading him.
- When serving as Sage's rival in Sonic Racing Crossworlds, he entertains the idea of killing her to hurt Eggman.
- When meeting somebody who hates Sonic (such as Jet or Metal Sonic) or Eggman (such as Omega), he attempts to propose an alliance with them based on said hatred and convince the to work together on killing them.
Comics[]
- After Dr. Starline offered the Deadly Six to make amends with Eggman by having them control the Zombots, he immediately planned on betraying him and taking revenge on Eggman and Sonic.
- After being invited to the Faceship, he took control of Metal Sonic and tried to have him kill Eggman and Starline.
- Immediately after taking control of the Faceship, he took the power of the Chaos Emeralds and gave them to his pack, ordering them to go throughout the world and use their empowered ability to control machines to take control of the Zombots to destroy the world as revenge against Eggman and Sonic.
- He attempted to infect all of Angel Island with the Metal Virus before the Faceship was destroyed.
- After transforming into Giant Zavok, he threw Zombots onto Angel Island, which eventually infected nearly every surviving member of Sonic’s group. To make matters worse, the Zombots included the friends that had previously succumbed to the metal virus, including Charmy, Vector, Shadow, Cheese, Chocola, Big, Froggy, and Tangle. The latter of which caused Whisper to breakdown emotionally at the sight.
- He attempted to stop Sonic from reaching the last Chaos Emerald by taking control of Metal Sonic again.
- After Sonic and Silver went Super, he futilely attempted to kill them both.
- Even after losing the Chaos Emeralds and Metal Virus, he proclaimed he would destroy the world with his own hands before attempting to kill Cream, a 6 year old, just to spite Sonic, who was missing following the Metal Virus purge.
- Although he teamed up with Starline, he planned on betraying him from the start (though Starline was also planning on betraying everyone, an intention Zavok anticipated).
- He attempted to kill Starline after having him clear Mimic’s record on the Eggnet while giving him full control of the base. (Though Starline deserved it)
- While he respected Rough and Tumble for their fighting prowess, it wasn’t genuine since he harshly dismissed them for being unable to capture Starline and poisoned by the platypus. Ultimately, he clearly saw the group, including Mimic whom he showed the most respect towards, as means of reuniting with the rest of the Zeti and getting revenge on Eggman, given he internally remarked he cared little for the others before they agreed to work together and referred them as "Non-Zeti" for their shortcomings.
- He ravaged two villages alongside Zazz and Zomnon after reuniting with them and another after reuniting with the other half of the Deadly Six. It's even implied that they caused many casualties.
- He raided Restoration HQ with his allies in an attempt to destroy it and cause irreparable damage to the world.
- Fighting Sonic again, he also planned to broadcast Sonic's death once he killed him, and knocked Tangle and Whisper unconscious when they intervened with the fight.
- After Sonic gave him and the other Zeti mercy by sending them back to the Lost Hex, he responded by vowing to one day return and make him and everyone he loves suffer, which caused Sonic to have a momentary harsh recap of how his merciful acts to foes panned out.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Despite his ruthless nature and having no qualms physically abusing most of them, he does care about the other members of the Deadly Six and went out of his way to reunite them and even motivated them to uphold their pride. He especially cares for Master Zik, whom he greatly respects and takes his advice and wisdom to heart when forming plans. Even in later games, whenever Zik is brought up, Zavok continues to speak highly of him. He is also shown encouraging Zazz in his Rival Battle dialogue in Sonic Racing Crossworlds.
- He can respect the resolve and ideals of his opponents as shown when he respected Sonic's tenacity in fighting the Deadly Six alone and not compromising his principles even after he threatened him. During Dodon Pa's Grand Prix, he acknowledged the other teams were strong and openly stated he could respect that.
