Yamauchi Yodo is the overarching antagonist of Ryū Ga Gotoku Ishin! and its 2023 remake Like a Dragon: Ishin! (known as Ryū Ga Gotoku Ishin! Kiwami in Japanese). He is the greedy and power-hungry daimyo of the Tosa Domain who is planning to sell the entirety of Japan to the British for them to colonize, in hopes of being a puppet ruler of Japan.
He was "played" by Kyohei Jingu, and thus voiced by Hiroaki Yoshida as well.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He works and conspires with Takechi Hanpeita, the Tosa Loyalist's primary leader after it's original head, Yoshida Toyo was murdered on Takechi's orders, in order to overthrow the Bakufu.
- He helps Takechi fake his own death which leads to Takechi taking the name of "Sakamoto Ryoma" in order to collude with the leaders of the Satsuma Domain and the Choshu Loyalists, in hopes of using them to start an anti-Bakufu national civil war.
- He had Takechi and Bafuku member Katsu Rintaro supply him with weapons and ammunition from the British.
- After the game's final boss, a redeemed Takechi tells the real Ryoma that Yamauchi has been the mastermind behind his actions, and that he had been using his actions as a means to his ultimate plan. Before he can reveal his plan, Yamauchi appears and shoots Ryoma, which Takechi takes the bullet for. Yamauchi reveals he knew Takechi would eventually betray him. He reveals his plans is to sell the entirety of Japan to the British so that they can colonize it, and so that he can rule over what would be left of Japan as a puppet leader.
- When he is cornered by Ryoma and hiis Shinsengumi allies, he cowardly begs Ryoma to spare him, offering him the ability to rule over all of Shikoku in his puppet empire, and saying he is the only one who can save Japan. Thankfully his pleas for life are rejected and Ryoma murders him.
- Unlike Takechi, who has various redeeming qualities such as being a genuine well-intentioned extremist and ultimately redeeming himself, Yamauchi Yodo has none and is ultimately nothing more than a smug, power-hungry coward.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He ultimately relies on Fridge Horror as while selling off Japan to be a British colony is undeniably bad, how bad the colonization would be is never explored, and his other worst crime, intending to start a national civil war, is shared with Takechi Hanpeita, who also has bonus crimes and is more of a personal foe to the protagonist Ryoma, such as having their adoptive father Yoshida Toyo murdered and having the Shinsengumi light the city of Kyo ablaze. However this isn't too much as the fridge horror is plot central and he only fails the standards to one person.
