Was the human world worthy of salvation? Or destruction and rebirth? ...It was all a part of my game.
~ Yaldabaoth's true nature.
Preposterous... You dare rob the people's wishes!?
~ Yaldabaoth's villainous breakdown before getting shot by Satanael's Sinful Shell.

Yaldabaoth, also known as the Holy Grail, is the overarching antagonist of the Persona 5 sub-series within the Persona series.

He is a false god born from the subconscious desires of humanity to be controlled and have orders. He is revealed to be the true mastermind of the game, as he orchestrated most of the events during the story, such as giving Ren Amamiya and Goro Akechi the ability to use the Wild Card.

Due to his actions and manipulating the events of the story, he is one of the arch-enemies of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, particularly towards Ren and Morgana.

Yaldabaoth is voiced by Masane Tsuneyama in Japanese and David Lodge in English.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Imprisons Igor and splits his assistant Lavenza into two separate beings, Caroline and Justine.
    • In the updated re-release Persona 5 Royal, during the third semester, the player can spend time with Lavenza, and in one of the hangout sessions, Lavenza is seen sleeping, where she has a nightmare about being split in two again by Yaldabaoth. This proves she may have PTSD of the experience, making Yaldabaoth even worse.
  • Gives Goro Akechi the ability to use his Persona Loki, which results in him murdering many people via triggering psychotic breakdowns or killing their shadows that resulted in mental shutdowns.
  • Held a "game", where two humans, the protagonist and Goro Akechi must compete. where whoever wins will decide the fate of humanity. If Joker wins, humanity will be spared, but if Akechi wins, humanity will be doomed. Yaldabaoth rigs the game in his favor by influencing the masses to follow Akechi.
  • Manipulates the masses into voting for Masayoshi Shido to be the next Prime Minister of Japan, who is an egotistical and corrupt man who wants to rule the country with an iron fist.
    • Despite this, he still aided Ren in defeating him, showing that his assistance to Shido is only for his game.
  • He is responsible for all the misery and pain caused by the Palace Rulers throughout the game by extension. Especially the likes of Suguru Kamoshida (an abusive PE coach and sex predator) and Junya Kaneshiro (who extorts and blackmails high school students and women into smuggling drugs and prostitution).
  • Subjugated the Shadows defeated by the Phantom Thieves as a mockery of their efforts to reform society.
  • Fuses the real word with Mementos, an alternate world made out of the public's subconscious, causing humanity to be easier to manipulate.
    • This later causes Takuto Maruki to awaken Azathoth & evolve it to Adam Kadmon after Maruki displayed a renewed interest in finishing his paper, thus being indirectly responsible for Maruki's misguided attempts to brainwash the world as the new God of Control.
  • Erasing the Phantom Thieves from the public's subconscious, essentially retconning them from existence giving them a cruel and unusual death.
  • Tried to enslave all of humanity in his world that is fused with Mementos, turning everyone into apathetic individuals. In the end, he is eventually killed by the bullet Sinful Shell delivered through Ren's Ultimate Persona Satanel.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has moral agency issues, due to being created from humanity's wish to be controlled, and as such, serves as a dictator.
  • He fails the Heinous Standards to Tohru Adachi, who attempted to fuse the real world with the TV World, and would thus fill the world with Shadows who would end up destroying everyone and turning them into Shadows, giving them a fate worse than death, along with other omnicidal gods in the series (such as Pandora, Nyarlathotep, Nyx and Izanami).
