Wulf is the main antagonist of the 2024 anime fantasy film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. He is the son of Lord Freca from Rohan.
During a fist fight between Freca and the Rohan King Helm Hammerhand, Helm accidentally kills Freca by hitting him too hard on the head. This fuels Wulf with desire for revenge and he attacks and tries to kill Helm. This causes Helm to banish him as punishment because Héra begged for his life.
Years later, Wulf has managed to convince all the Dunlending clans to unite and to wage war against Rohan with him as their leader. He plans to take revenge for his father's death and to become the new king of Rohan.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close To Being Pure Evil?[]
- When his father, Lord Freca, dies in a fist fight with Helm Hammerhand, Wulf is furious and attempts to kill Helm to avenge his father even though it was an accident on Helm's part.
- During his banishment, Wulf has gathered a huge army of Dunlending clans by speaking to them and convincing them to follow him. He plans to wage war against Rohan and kill king Helm Hammerhand along with his sons to avenge his father.
- He sends several of his men to kidnap Héra and bring her to him. He explains his plans to her and promises that he would kill her brothers and her father.
- When Héra asks him not to do it because his warmongering would lead to the deaths of many innocents and she says she would marry him if he gives up on his plans, he gets angry that she puts conditions for her to marry him and stays resolute in his intentions to wage war.
- Wulf marches with his army against Rohan, killing everything in his path with one village being shown burning and its inhabitants slaughtered.
- Wulf plans to put the capital Eldoras to the torch, slaughter its inhabitants and rule over what remains of the kingdom of Rohan. He manages to convince one of the Rohan lords to betray his own and help him defeat his enemies and breach the defenses of the capital. He slaughters many of the Rohan soldiers and burns down the city.
- He personally kills Haleth, Héra's brother, by shooting him through the throat.
- Wulf captures Hama, Héra's other brother, bring him before the walls of the fortress of Hornburg, and kills him before the eyes of Hama's sister and father, Helm.
- He does this despite the fact Helm begs Wulf not to kill his son and promises that if Wulf spares his son's life, he would surrender to him unconditionally and would give him his crown.
- Wulf also ignores his most trusted follower, General Targg, who advises him not to kill Hama because if they accept Helm's terms, they would win without giving any casualties from their own but if they kill Hama, they would have to besiege Hornburg for possibly months which would lead to the deaths of many of their men.
- This shows that Wulf doesn't care about the lives of his own men, many of whom die during the siege because of his decision, as long as he hurts Helm as much as possible.
- Wulf orders his forces to besiege Hornburg and he plans to slaughter every single person inside the fortress, including the women and the children. He makes his men build a siege tower with which he would be able to conquer the fortress.
- Wulf has his men kill Helm Hammerhand in front of the gates of Hornburg.
- When the Dunlending men grow disgruntled because of the harsh winter and how many casualties they have given and they start to ask why they even fight, Wulf lies to them that the fortress is full of treasures and they would take them only if they conquer it. When Targg tells him in private that the fortress doesn't have many treasures, Wulf simpy replies that his men don't know this, showing once again that he doesn't care about his followers and is willing to throw away their lives.
- At this point, he has already achieved his revenge against Helm, making his attempts to slaughter the remaining refugees and Héra even worse.
- Wulf engages Héra in a duel and makes a promise he wouldn't harm the refugees if she beats him. However, when the duel ends with Héra defeating him, Wulf orders his men to chase the refugees and slaughter every single one of them.
- Wulf's most loyal follower, General Targg, is so disgusted by his lack of honor that he calls him "a coward with no honor". Wulf responds to this criticism by stabbing his general with a dagger, killing him on the spot with no hesitation.
- Even when he ultimately loses the war and Héra spares his life, he takes advantage of her mercy to make one final attempt on her life while she has lowered her guard which leads to his death.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Evil?[]
- He genuinely loves his father as he enraged when he is killed in a fist fight by Helm Hammerhand and he is motivated by a desire for revenge against the royal family of Rohan.
- He is slightly tragic since he witnessed his father dying, then he was banished when he tried to kill Helm in revenge. He is given sympathy from the narrative with it being stated his experiences have made him a harsher man, he is shown in a flashback as a kid where he used to be more innocent, he states to General Targg that he feels he can't give up on his intention of slaughtering all the refugees inside the fortress because it would mean everything he had done had been pointless and Héra is shown to be hesitant about killing him.
