It's sheer perfection. My precious G-Virus. No one will take you away from me...
~ William Birkin before being ambushed by HUNK and Umbrella security squad
William: You don't get away that easily. (injects himself a seryingue of G)
Annette: Good god, William. What have you done?
William: G is my creation!
~ William after injecting himself with G in the remake

Dr. William Birkin, also known as the G mutation or The Golgotha Monster, is the secondary antagonist in the Resident Evil franchise.

He serves as an unseen antagonist in Resident Evil, the main antagonist of Resident Evil 2 and it’s 2019 remake (specifically the main antagonist of Claire's scenario and the secondary antagonist of Leon's), one of the two secondary antagonists of Resident Evil 0 (alongside Albert Wesker), the overarching antagonist (as the catalyst between Raccoon City's destruction and the subsequent deployment of the Nemesis T-Type) of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and its remake and one of the main antagonists of Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles.

He was an extremely knowledgeable virologist who became a highly and influentially decorated member of Umbrella Corporation, to the point where both Birkin and his wife ended up being responsible for the creation of the Golgotha Virus (G-Virus). Furthermore, the pair had indirectly collaborated with events regarding for the release of a modified T-Virus strain into the sewers and water supply of Raccoon City - thus resulting in the infamous Raccoon City Outbreak that would ultimately end with the complete destruction of the city via a nuclear warhead.

After being confronted by US Forces, William is shot several times in the chest and believed to be dead. However, Birkin survived long enough to inject himself with The G-Virus, proclaiming how the virus is his creation and only he can use it. This causes Birkin to horrifically mutate and lose his once brilliant mind, and he allows himself to become a giant, rabid monster, now using the name, Golgotha.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He and Wesker created the Umbrella Corporation's deadliest bio-weapons such as the Hunter, the Licker, or the Tyrant.
  • He and Wesker murdered their former teacher James Marcus and took over the project of T-Virus, under Umbrella's orders.
  • He and Wesker experimented a sample of NE-A parasite on Lisa Trevor, George's daughter, and turned her into an immortal and mutated creature.
  • In the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2, it shows that he experimented on children in the Raccoon City orphanage.
  • He plotted against Umbrella (even if they aren't fine persons themselves) by trying to sell samples of G-Virus to a rival company.
  • He sabotaged one of their facility by flooding it with failed virus samples which resulted in the infection of the staff but also of many residents living around Arklay. This also makes him responsible of the events of the first game with the S.T.A.R.S arriving at Arklay to investigate, leading to their deaths with only five survivors.
    • This also makes him responsible of the events of the first game with the S.T.A.R.S arriving at Arklay to investigate, leading to their deaths with only five survivors.
  • Him being injured by HUNK's squad and taken over by Umbrella isn't played for his sympathy as he plotted against them and had an obsessed pride over G.
  • He injected himself a sample of G to get revenge over Umbrella which turned him into a mutating abomination.
  • Under the control of G, he killed multiple people and infected them with a G embryon, turning them into G-adults.
  • He accidently spread samples of T-Virus through the sewer rats which makes him responsible of the virus gaining access of Raccoon City and turning the people into zombies.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He loved his wife Annette and daughter Sherry. Even if his relationship with Annette isn't explored in details, he did care for Sherry as he saved her twice, once from Chief Brian Irons and the second time where he used the last of his humanity to save Sherry and Claire by killing the T-00 before the virus took over his body completely, which means he somewhat managed to recognize her through G's control.
