~ Walter to Leon Belmont |
Walter Bernhard is the main antagonist of Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. He is an extremely powerful Vampire Lord ruling the Forest of Eternal Night.
After Leon Belmont defeats him, however, it is revealed that he was but a pawn in Mathias Cronqvist's plan to take his place.
He was voiced by Yukimasa Kishino in Japanese version, and by Jamieson Price in English version.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Whilst his origin story was unknown, the game did showed us Walter's crucial information related to his crimes, as he became an immortal vampire around 42 and gradually grew bored of his immortality. As such, he had fun in tormenting and torturing humans and sometimes, his minions.
- A case in point, Walter began to torment and vampirize ordinary human beings in what he called as a cat-and-mouse game, only to drive away his boredom with his victims' suffering. In the past, Walter abducted Justine Gandolfi, daughter of alchemist Rinaldo Gandolfi, and turned her into a vampire to serve the Succubus. Rinaldo tried to save his daughter, but he failed.
- Walter spared Rinaldo, but not as a sign of mercy. Rather, he wanted to see Rinaldo seeking more warriors and allies to avenge his daughter, of which Walter believed it will bring more newcomers into his twisted game and make it more interesting. In the process, he and his minions had defeated several warriors that arrived to challenge him.
- In addition, in some point of his past, Walter corrupted one of his servants, Joachim Armster, into his vampire lieutenant to gain immortality, but when Joachim rebelled against him, Walter defeated him and chained him into a cell room as punishment. He also left Joachim inside the prison with no supply of blood, so that the latter will never escape, resulting Joachim being driven into insanity because of the isolation and starvation.
- Some time before the story began, Walter met Mathias Cronqvist and Death, as Mathias began his revenge against God and humanity for his loss. Mathias and Death convinced Walter to abduct Leon's fiancƩe, Sara Trantoul, saying it will bring Walter a more powerful warrior than ever before that would challenge him. Thrilled, Walter abducted Sara and forced Leon to start his quest to challenge the cruel vampire lord.
- After their first confrontation, Walter managed to fend off Leon because of the Ebony Stone he held, and Walter returned Sara back to Leon's side... after he had turned her into a vampire. Walter tricked Leon with it, so that he could see Leon's suffering.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Walter suffered from large offscreen villainy and characterization, which is even worse than Actrise's case (who at least had a specific number of her victims and had less resources than Walter). Besides Sara, Joachim and the Gandolfi family, we never saw more details of Walter's specific crimes or more of its dark effects onscreen, aside from two women he vampirized, one of his minions turned insane, an old man Walter broke, and our hero who went so far to fight Walter, only losing the woman whom he loved.
- Whilst being much more unsympathetic than most of the series' villains, Walter did failed behind the audio drama-exclusive villain, Magnus, who had not only toyed with his human victims, but also drove Alucard insane, forcing Alucard to kill his love ones in an attempt to bring back Dracula's reign of terror for Magnus' own good. Above all, Magnus was also an independent villain away from Dracula's main force, and being an ordinary incubus, he had much less resources than Walter had.
