What the f-ck is wrong with you, Max? Why don't you just die?! You hate life, you're miserable all the time, afraid to enjoy yourself even a little! Face it, you might as well be dead already. Do yourself a favor, give up!
~ Vladimr Lem during Max's chase in Alfred Woden's manor.
Ha ha ha, that was... Max, dearest of all my friends, I was supposed to be the hero...
~ Vlad's last words

Vladimir "Vlad" Lem (Russian: Владимир "Влад" Лем) is a major character in the 2001 video game Max Payne and the main antagonist of the 2003 sequel Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne.

He is a Russian mobster, arms-dealer, and the leader of the Russian Mob in New York City. He is engaged in a violent war with the Punchinello crime family. Fighting the mobsters, Vlad makes an alliance with Max Payne but, a few years later, he gets power hungry and ultimately becomes Max's enemy.

In Max Payne, he was portrayed by Marko Saaresto and voiced by Dominic Hawksley. In Max Payne 2, he was portrayed by Peter Giles and voiced by Jonathan Davis.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes His Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Although in the first part he was a fair man and Max's friend, his thirst for power got the better of him, and he became much angrier.
  • He was the head of one of the most powerful criminal clans in New York, and led cases such as contract killings, arms trafficking and drug trafficking.
  • He hired Cleaning hitmen to deal with his rivals, namely members of the Punchinello mafia clan and the Inner Circle, as a result, a very large number of innocent bystanders died.
  • As a former member of the Inner Circle, he was going to become its head by killing its current leader, Alfred Woden.
  • He organized an attack by Cleaners on his own warehouse, resulting in the deaths of innocent workers, as well as his assistant Annie Finn, which he did not particularly regret.
  • He organized an attack by Cleaners on Max Payne's apartment, hoping to kill him and Mona Sax, resulting in the death of a very large number of innocent residents.
  • He organized an attack by Cleaners on the police department in order to kill Mona Sax, resulting in the death of many police officers.
  • He ordered Valerie Winterson to kill Max and Mona when she got the chance.
  • He killed all of Vinnie Gognitti's men.
  • He tricked Vinnie into wearing a Captain Baseballbatboy costume with a bomb strapped to it's head, if Vinnie tried to take off the mask, he would explode.
  • He taunted Vinnie before killing him forcing him to play a trivia game, giving him an extremely humiliating death. While Vinnie was a villain himself, Vlad comes off as extremely sadistic and cold.
    • While we only see Vinnie's death in Max's hallucination, it's implied that his death was much more gruesome in reality.
  • He shot Max in the face, believing that he had killed him as a mark for the Winterson murder.
  • He kills Mona and Woden in front of Max, angering the latter to such an extent that he finally killed him.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has a certain degree of affability, because he was initially quite friendly to Max and Mona, and even respected them until they began to confront him.
  • He genuinely loved Valerie Winterson, and even wanted to take revenge on Max for her murder.
  • He also took care of Winterson's blind son, and even funded the school he attended.

Trivia[]

  • Vlad is the only main antagonist of the Max Payne games to not qualify as Pure Evil. Nicole Horne from the first game, and Victor Branco from the third qualify as pure evil and are the only characters in the trilogy to do so.
  • Vlad is the only main antagonist to appear in more than one game.
  • Like many other characters that returned from the first game other than Max, Vlad's voice actor and cutscene actor were replaced.
