I, Vigo, the Scourge of Carpathia, the Sorrow of Moldavia, command you!
~ Vigo

On a mountain of skulls, in the castle of pain, I sat on a throne of blood! What was will be! What is will be no more! Now is the season of EVIL!
~ Vigo to Janosz during his introduction

No! I, Ray, am Vigo, shall rule the Earth! Begone, you pitiful half-men!
~ Vigo to the ghostbusters while briefly possessing Ray

Vigo Von Homburg Deutschendorf, also known by his historical alias "Vigo the Carpathian", is the main antagonist of Ghostbusters II.

He was portrayed by the late Wilhelm von Homburg and voiced by the late Max von Sydow.

History[]

Vigo was born in the Balkan kingdom of Carpathia. Vigo ruled his homeland and later the conquered Romanian region of Moldovia with an iron fist, throughout his rule, he would commit untold levels of mass murder and other atrocities as well as genocide. He would die at the age of 105 when his subjects started rebelling and murdered him. However, he would not completely stay dead as he would become a ghost and possess one of his paintings.

He returned to New York in 1989. Vigo used the River of Slime, generated by Mood Slime. The mood slime boosted Vigo's powers and make him available to channel people's negative energy to manifest an army of angry spirits, that soon started terrorizing New York City. Although he still needed a physical form and to get it, he planned to possess a baby.

Vigo manipulated the Museum's Curator Dr. Janosz Poha into bringing Dana Barrett's baby so he could possess her child and be reborn and freely rule the world once again. Vigo's plans were halted by the Ghostbusters. They attacked him completely draining all of his powers and destroying his spirit in the painting.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • When he was human, he was a tyrannical wizard and autocrat who murdered countless numbers of people and committed genocide.
  • Conquered both Carpathia and Moldavia for a hundred years, during which he was shown to be an extremely unpopular ruler, having multiple brutal nicknames given to him by his people. Nicknames that he later embraces and is proud of, showing how sadistic he is...
  • Before the film even introduces us to Vigo, his Mood Slime nearly causes Dana Barrett's son's death due to bringing his carriage to life and causing it to drive into oncoming traffic. While he didn't directly cause this, he is still partially responsible for this due to being in control of The Mood Slime...
  • Possessed Janosz Poha, turning him into his own personal Renfield, and is partially responsible for all of his deranged actions throughout the film...
  • When Janosz asks if he could have Dana Barrett as his 'wife', Vigo agrees for pragmatic reasons... Which if successful would have made him responsible for whatever cruel actions Janosz would do to Dana...
  • Vigo seems to only care about Janosz for pragmatic reasons, and he showed zero care for him after he got defeated by The Ghostbusters. Showing that he viewed Janosz as nothing but a pawn, despite Janosz showing nothing but loyalty to him...
  • He attempted to kill Ray and Egon by locking the door to thier photo room and then setting the room on fire with his powers, which might have worked if not for the intervention of Winston.
  • When The Ghostbusters were trying to find his river of slime, he tortured them with visions of his past victims. Showing them illusions of decapitated heads mounted on pikes, and later sent a Ghost Train after them, which severely traumatized Winston.
  • His Mood Slime caused Ray and Winston to begin fighting each other, and after freeing themselves of the slime's effects, Winston says that he wanted to kill Ray... Which would have made Vigo responsible for murder by proxy...
  • Unleashed his Mood Slime across New York City, summoning hundreds of ghosts, bringing various inanimate objects to life, and causing mass amounts of destruction and chaos... It's also very likely that this resulted in multiple deaths, though none are shown on-screen...
  • Created a massive slime dome around the museum, making sure that no one would be able to interrupt his possession ritual.
  • Planned to posses Dana Barrett's son Oscar to use him as a physical form, which would have given him enough power to take over the world...
  • Paralyzed The Ghostbusters with his powers, and later tortured them with an energy blast when Peter began to insult him. afterwards, he went back to attempting to forcibly fuse with Oscar again...
  • Attempted to possess Ray multiple times, eventually succeeding right before his defeat at the end of the film...
  • He is partially responsible for all the actions of the ghosts and monsters summoned by his Mood Slime...
  • He shows zero redeeming qualities, and his taken seriously by the film... To the point where any and all comedic moments involving him are people attempting to make fun of him, to which he shows no reaction to beyond disdain or annoyance...
  • While Vigo doesn’t have an insane amount of personality, he does have enough to push him out of Generic Doomsday Villain territory.
  • While all the ghosts in the franchise are evil, Vigo shows more agency while most ghosts don't, and was evil even before he became one.
  • While Gozer done worse, Vigo has fewer resources than Gozer.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • While his genocide and mass murder he committed in the past would make him heinous enough, it is completely off-screen with little to no onscreen impacts and the rest of his crimes are generic Ghostbusters villainy.
