Utsuro is the main antagonist of the science-fiction comedy manga and anime series, Gintama.
He is the founder and first leader of the Tenshouin Naraku before Oboro took his position and the original identity and self of Yoshida Shouyou and now part of the Tendoshu.
In Japanese, Utsuro is voiced by Koichi Yamadera (who also voiced Hantengu's clone, Zohakuten, from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) and in English, he's voiced by Simon Hayama
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Became a serial killer against humans to have revenge against them for his suffering.
- After being captured instead of being executed he became the leader of the Naraka, assassinating others for 500 years.
- When Shoyo got captured he killed all of his other personalities and took control of his body again.
- Attempted to kill Gintoki, Nobume, Kagura, and Sougo during the Farewell Shinsengumi arc.
- Allied with the space pirates called the Harusame by helping them kill their elders and work under him.
- Ripped off Umibouzu’s arm during a fight.
- Tricked the Tendoshu into giving him access to the Atlanta cores on every planet by promising to fix their degrading bodies (he did not).
- Caused the Atlanta cores on multiple planets to overload, destroying the planets and framing the Tendoshu for it to trick the survivors in starting a war on earth.
- By tricking Atlanta Liberation army into bringing a planet destroying cannon combined with causing the Atlanta on the planet to go wild he planned to destroy earth and have the resulting Atlanta from the planet’s destruction destroy the entire universe.
- Killed multiple members of the Yato and Shinsengumi (including Yamazaki).
- Willingly jumped into the Atlanta and taunted Gintoki for not being able to save his master Shoyo.
- Controlled the Naraku via his blood in an attempt to revive himself.
- Possesses Takasugi’s body in attempt to kill the revived Shoyo.
- While trying to kill Gintoki he taunted him for trying to kill his friend and that he would have nothing if he did it.
- Unlike most Gintama characters, he is always taken seriously by the plot and is never made fun of in universe.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He is genuinely tragic due to suffering at the hands of humans for decades, being tortured and killed and revived over and over again and being forgotten about in a cell for decades. This caused to develop a death wish due to wanting his suffering to end. Although this doesn’t mitigate wanting to destroy the entire universe and how sadistic he is, still it is played for sympathy and cannot be ignored.

- Utsuro is currently the only antagonist to be Near Pure Evil in Gintama.
