| ~ Unity speaking through its lackey Reverend Amos Howell. |
Unity is a one-shot antagonist in Superman: The Animated Series, serving as the titular main antagonist of the Season 3 episode of the same name.
It is a parasitic Lovecraftian-like alien beast who feeds on any living being's electrical impulses by connecting itself to their brains and nervous systems with its own spores, assisted by its servant Reverend Amos Howell. Around the late 20th century, Unity and Howell arrive on the Earth and try to take it over starting with Smallville, Kansas, coming across Supergirl and Superman in the process.
It was voiced by Stephen Root.
Its Evil Ranking[]
What Makes It Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Visited different planets and worlds with Reverend Amos Howell, its servant, and "converted" any potential followers by feeing on their energies through its tentacles from all ages, even minors.
- To be specific, the "conversion" process involves Unity infecting its victims with parasitic spores that find their way into their brains and nervous systems to control them, essentially turning all its "followers" into brainwashed zombies. It would then allow them to go to with its parasitic spores so they could "convert" their whole civilizations.
- It's implied that it killed or forced into submission anyone who tried to destroy it in some of the worlds it visited, as Howell notes that they never had problems with those who opposed them before Supergirl and Superman did.
- Takes control of all of Smallville's citizens, among them Ma and Pa Kent, while Superman and Supergirl are in Metropolis, "converting" the Smallville pastor Ross with Howell's help, who in turn incited all Smallvillians to go into the tent where Unity had settled itself.
- Makes its brainwashed followers to suffer the pain Howell feels if Supergirl hurts him, making her hurt her adoptive parents, her neighbours and acquaintances.
- Attempts to spread its influence by sending its enslaved followers under Howell's supervision to go across the United States of America for more followers untill all of the Earth's population has been "converted".
- Moves from its place when it decides that Superman should see its might for fighting Howell and freeing its followers by burning its spores, which is the only way to free them from Unity's parasitic influence.
- Tries to subject Superman to its will with Howell's assistance for opposing it.
- Its death, despite being brutal due to Supergirl throwing a gas canister into its body and blowing it up with her heat vision to blown it up into smithereens, was all but deserved and not played for sympathy. For all its irredeemable actions, much like Superman with Howell, Unity has the distinction of being the only enemy of Supergirl she was forced to kill.
What Prevents It from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Though it's responsible for Howell being Pure Evil due to working with him as a team to infect all of the universe with its parasitic influence, Unity suffers from a lack of sufficient characterization, as it just speaks two times in all the episode and relies mostly on Howell to advance its conquest plans, in addition to not show that much personality unlike its fellow alien prophet.
Trivia[]
- It's theorized that Unity may have been controlling Reverend Amos Howell due to Stephen Root voicing both. Though unlikely given how Howell is from the same species as Unity and keeps attacking Superman even after Unity dies, if this were confirmed, it would strip Howell of his Pure Evil status and give it instead to Unity for being the one puppeteering him, thus all of its characterization being displayed by Howell.
