I've moved beyond your mission. I'm free.
~ Ultron to Iron Man.
Do you see the beauty of it? The inevitability? You rise, only to fall. You, Avengers, you are my meteor. My swift and terrible sword and the Earth will crack with the weight of your failure. Purge me from your computers; turn my own flesh against me. It means nothing. When the dust settles, the only thing living in this world... will be metal.
~ Ultron's second most famous quote.

Ultron is the titular main antagonist of the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron.

He was an A.I. created through the Mind Stone who was supposed to be used as a peacekeeping program but went rouge and decided to wipe out humanity believing them to be unable to be saved.

He was portrayed by the late Neil Fingleton through motion-capture and voiced by James Spader.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • He believes the meaning of life is to destroy it and create peace in that way.
  • Despite being an A.I. and only lasting for four days, he still has Moral Agency as he was initially created for peacekeeping and willingly chose to rebel against humanity. He also stated that he could explain his "evil plan" and his final interaction showed that he could be reasoned with but he would instead insist on maintaining his evil ways until the very end, as well as showing that he knows what he's doing is outright wrong and yet he doesn't care about it at all.
  • Despite the high heinous standard of the MCU, Ultron easily passes it due to trying to kill billions of innocent people whilst being clearly limited to his own homeworld in terms of scale.
  • Despite having many comedic moments, such as singing I've Got No Strings several times, implying that Thor has never cooked omelets, or even stating that he can't physically throw up in his robotic mouth when mocking Captain America for thinking he could live without a war for being "God's righteous man," he is still taken very seriously and his worst crimes are played for horror and nightmare fuel.
  • Many of the horrible events of the MCU can be tied directly to Ultron. He is indirectly responsible for the Avengers failing to stop Thanos, leading to several events such as Thanos wiping out half of all life in the universe, the deaths of Vision, Black Widow and Iron Man, Mysterio murdering many innocent people with Stark Tech, the conflict with several parallel universes which ends with Peter Parker losing everyone he loves, Wanda becoming a multiversal threat and nearly fulfilling an ancient demonic prophecy, and the disbandment of the Avengers following the Battle of Earth and the Guardians of the Galaxy following their quarrels with the High Evolutionary.

Avengers: Age of Ultron[]

  • After he was created, he saw humanity's flaws and decided to wipe them out, cynically thinking they were completely beyond saving and delusionally believing they had brought his wrath upon themselves and it served them right.
  • He killed J.A.R.V.I.S. after he tried to warn Tony Stark about Ultron turning hostile.
  • He disrupted the party that the Avengers were holding to celebrate defeating von Strucker to taunt them. He then ordered all of his robots to fight them.
  • He recruited the Maximoff twins so they can kill the Avengers while lying to them about his true intentions.
  • He began stealing robot parts from labs, weapons facilities and jet propulsion labs, killing anyone who engaged and having Wanda Maximoff taunt them with their worst fears.
  • He travelled to the prison cell of HYDRA leader Wolfgang von Strucker and asked him to get Vibranium which he needed for one of his plans. Strucker told Ultron where to get them but Ultron killed him anyway so he could taunt the Avengers.
  • He cut Klaue's arm off and kicked him down the stairs in anger and confusion after he compared him to Tony Stark. While he did cruelly imply he was another blip in Tony's metallic pawns, his reaction was still far too extreme.
  • He blackmailed Helen Cho and brainwashed her into using Loki Laufeyson's Scepter so she can create a synthetic body imbued with Vibranium for him.
  • When Wanda learns what he truly plans and snaps Helen out of the brainwashing, Ultron almost kills her by blasting her.
  • He kidnapped Black Widow when she got the synthetic body.
  • He planned to drop Sokovia out of the sky like a giant meteor, forcing humanity to go extinct. To this end, he battled with the Avengers in Sokovia, which killed likely hundreds of innocent civilians, and even attempted to kill Hawkeye and a child before Quicksilver steps in and takes the bullets.

Captain America: Civil War[]

  • Even after his demise, his actions had a posthumous effects as Baron Zemo's family was killed in the attack on Sokovia, motivating Zemo to tear apart the Avengers. Sokovia's destruction would also play a large role in drafting the Sokovia Accords. These make him indirectly responsible for the Avengers Civil War, the outcome fracturing the Avengers' fellowship.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He seemed to regret having killed J.A.R.V.I.S, openly saying he was a good guy and that it wouldn't have been his first call to kill him. He similarly regretted amputating Klaue, saying he was sorry and assuring him he would be okay.
  • He showed some care for the Maximoff twins and was genuinely hurt when they betrayed him. His killing of Quicksilver was accidental as he meant to kill Hawkeye and the boy, and he told Wanda that if she stays on the train, she would die from the impact of the elevated portion of Novi Grand crashing against the ground.
  • He had a Pet the Dog moment where he took pity on Klaue for emphasizing how much the vibranium cost him to obtain and compensated him by giving him billions of dollars, wherein there was obviously nothing in it for Ultron.
