I am Ultraman Tregear. I came to fulfill your wish.
~ Ultraman Tregear introducing himself to Katsumi Minato

Ultraman Tregear is a major antagonist in the Ultraman franchise. He is a former scientist of the land of light who after merging with Grimdo and becoming evil went on to destroy countless planets. He is the former friend of Taro and the arch enemy of Ultraman Taiga (and by extension Taiga's human host and friend Hiroyuki Kudo).

He serves as the overarching antagonist of Ultraman R/B, Ultraman Orb The Movie: Let Me Borrow the Power of Bonds, and Ultra Galaxy Fight: New Generation Heroes, the main antagonist in Ultraman R/B The Movie: Select! The Crystal of Bond and Ultraman Taiga, and the secondary antagonist of Ultraman Taiga The Movie: New Generation Climax

He voiced by Yuma Uchida in all of his appearances and Michael Rays in the English dub of Ultra Galaxy Fight: New Generation Heroes. His human form was portrayed by Kou Nanase.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • As a result of all the atrocities he committed throughout the multiverse, his name eventually became associated with temptation and disasters.
  • Throughout his crimes, he constantly expressed sadism and enjoyment out of them.
  • Whenever Taro or Taiga attempted to offer him redemption, he would always reject them.

Background[]

  • Having become disillusioned with the land of lights’s concepts of light and dark, he ultimately abandoned his identity as an Ultra entirely and later offered himself up to Grimdo, resulting in him gaining its powers. Following this, he then went on to use these powers to spread chaos throughout the multiverse (for the sake of it) in a attempt to prove that there was no such thing as good and evil. In particular, he would grant people's wishes and desires and use them to destroy their home planets.
  • At some point, during his travels he gave Murnau crystallization powers, thus making him indirectly responsible for all the crimes she committed in the Ultraman Orb the movie with these powers (ie trying to turn Earth and the creatures living on it into a crystal)
  • 1,300 years before the events of Ultraman R/b, he altered the DNA of an benevolent creature named Leugocyte, causing it to become violent and destroy and consume countless planets that weren’t a threat. As a result of this, he is indirectly responsible for it killing the original Rossu and Blu and causing their sister Saki temporarily become a villain. (For context, by the present, Saki attempted to blow up Earth by using herself as a bomb in order to kill Leugocyte and even sent a bunch of monsters to attack Katsumi and Asahi every time they interfered. Eventually though by the time she redeemed herself with the help of Katsumi and Asahi, She had sacrificed herself to save Katsumi and Isami from getting killed by Leugocyte).
  • Tampered with/corrupted all the Gigadelos robots Ilt created throughout the galaxy, causing to them to try and wipe out all life forms and destroy the planets/creatures they were meant to protect, including each other. As a result, Ilt was later forced to track them down and destroy every last one of them.

Ultraman R/B The Movie: Select! The Crystal of Bond[]

  • Prior to the events of the film, he abducted Riku Asakura/Ultraman Geed and his friend Pega and brought them into Katsumi and Isami’s universe. While in this universe, he placed Pega into Gan-Q
  • During the beginning of the film, he had Gan-Q and Bemstar attack a city to lure out Geed so that he would unknowingly kill the former while Pega was still inside. Fortunately Geed managed to realize before hand during the battle and eventually inform the two brothers.
  • Corrupted and brainwashed Yukio Toi into becoming Snake Darkness, by exploiting his resentment over failing to achieve his dreams as a video game developer.
  • Tricked Katsumi into banishing himself to Planet Hoster 21 by having Mecha Gomora attack the Pigmons residing there as bait.
  • Upon witnessing Katsumi defeat Mechagomora, he later had Toi/Snake Darkness beat him while insulting him at the same time
  • After Snake Darkness managed to force Katsumi back into his normal form, he later had the former come back to Earth and start attacking it while closing the portal, thus leaving Katsumi temporarily stranded all alone away from his family with no way of getting back.

Ultra Galaxy Fight: New Generation Heroes[]

  • In attempt to prove that Darkness and lIght were one in the same, he had Dark Killer resurrect Dark Lugiel and Etelgar and create dark copies of X, Orb, Geed, Rosso, Blu, and Zero.In addition to this, he also had Dark Killer kidnap Katsumi and Isami’s sister Asahi so that they couldn’t fuse together and form Gruebe.
  • Upon witnessing the new Generation heroes destroy Dark-Killer, he immediately revived him and had grow larger in order to mess with them.
  • During his fight with Ribut, he summoned in 2 Red Kings to fight him
  • Following Dark-Killer’s defeat, he later showed himself to the New generation heroes to inform them that he was the orchestrater behind the series. Additionally, before leaving, he revealed he was planning on destroying the Land of light, in particular Taro.

Ultraman Taiga[]

  • In the prologue of the series, he reduced Taiga, Titas, and Fuma into particles right in front of Taro (Taiga’s father).
  • 12 Years later, he then took on the human form of Kirisaki and began the remainder of the series tormenting Hiroyuki and Taiga.
  • In episode 1, he sent in Hellberus to attack a Zandrias mother who was trying to protect its child
  • In episode 2, he killed Hiroyuki’s pet Guesra named Chibesuke
  • In episode 3, he temporarily turned Rento Kujo into his puppet, specifically by exploiting desire to get revenge on the Cozmo Technica's president for killing him and using this to manipulate him into causing destruction while piloting Galactron.
  • In episode 4, he manipulated Volk into betraying the Villain Guild by stealing a bomb containing Darebolic and later having him unleash it onto the city.
  • In episode 6, he hired Alien Gapiya Abel to assassinate the Tri-Squad
  • In episode 10, he provoked Alien Nackle Odyessa (Hiroyuki’s old friend) into giving into his fighting instincts by awakening his pet Black King and letting it be killed by Titas. As a result of this, he is ultimately responsible for Odyessa letting Taiga kill him as he wanted to be put out of his misery after loosing Black King.
  • In episode 12, he knocked Alien Zelan Oshoro and granted Gymaira extra energy, resulting in it returning to the surface again and going on another rampage
  • In episode 13, he summoned the last remaining Gigadellos robot to attack Taiga. During this, he also admitted to Ilt his involvement in turning his robots rouge and destroying many planets and life forms.
  • In episode 15, he temporarily corrupted and brainwashed Taiga into his servant so that he could attack his father Taro out of spite. As a result, Hiroyuki, Titas, and Fuma were temporarily shut out of him in the process. It should be noted that he ultimately able to do this by allowing Taiga to collect and use the Kaiju Rings that he collected during the past 14 episodes, all of which slowly corrupted his soul while also making him more reckless.
  • In episode 17, he sent in Demaaga to attack the rendezvous point where his Hiroyuki’s friends were just to force him into choosing between saving them or the city.Additionally, near the end of episode, he killed Alien Seemon Meed during his assassination attempt on President Kana
  • In episode 18, he managed to temporarily convince Alien Hook and Alien Bat Komori into thinking that they should be ruling over humans instead of hiding, resulting in them sending their monsters to attack. In Komodi’s case, his Zetton hospitalized Asuka’s mother, resulting him in temporarily growing a prejudice towards aliens and him later EGIS so that he could fight them. Additionally, at the end of episode, he also managed to nearly kill Homare and get him hospitalized by shooting him. As a result of this, Hiroyuki briefly considered quoting E. G. I. S. In the next episode out of fear that it was putting them at risk
  • In episode 19, he summoned Gorothunder to defeat the Tri-Squad and kidnap Kana
  • In episode 21, he exploited Asuka’s prejudice towards aliens and had him attack a Ghose alien. Additionally, when Alien Ghose revealed to Taiga that the Pendan that was attacking was his pet (that he had raised from birth) and that he was simply trying to protect its master, Tregear immediately proceeded to jump in and kill it right in front of them.Following this, he later used the drill that was onboard Ghose’s ship to awaken the Ether (“Earth’s soul”) and contact Woola (a planet eater) into coming to Earth and devouring it.
  • In episode 23, he tricked Imit-Ultraman Belial into accidentally hitting a building that contained some of the members of the Villain Guild (ie Alien Chibull Mabuze, Alien Gadola, Alien Sran, Alien Zarab). After this, he immediately join forces with Imit-Belial in order to take down Taiga and Zero
  • In episode 25, he attempted to stop the Tri-Squad from saving Earth.

Ultraman Taiga The Movie: New Generation Climax[]

  • Had Grimdo possess Ultraman Taro and fight Taiga in order to spite the latter and mentally torment him while nearly causing his death in the process
  • In the climax, he revived Taiga’s past opponents and had them attack the New generation heroes.
  • When the new generation heroes managed to destroy the revived opponents, he later had Grimdo merge with him in order to help it kill them.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He is somewhat tragic for three reasons:
    1. He was very socially awkward and had very little if any friends and the only friend he did have was usually out defending the universe with the Space Garrison, thus making him feel very lonely (For context, Tregear at one point tried to get into the Space Garrison so that he could be with Taro but was ultimately rejected)
    2. He eventually attacked by his own mentor Ultraman Hikari, whom had temporarily fallen into darkness and become the vengeful Hunter knight Tsurugi.
    3. Having witnessed Hikari and Belial give into darkness (and by extension abandon the core values of the Land of Light), he ultimately became disillusioned with the Land of Light as whole, with him coming to the conclusion that the concepts of light and darkness were meaningless and that the concepts of bonds and friendship were nonexistent. Overall, these are the main reasons why Tregear became the nihilistic villain evil he eventually became. However, with this being said, considering all the heinous acts he committed and the amount of lives he took, this isn’t too severe of a prevention.
  • Despite everything he did to spite him, he still had respect (albeit a twisted one) for Taro, even calling out his name as he was dying. In fact in the novels, it’s revealed that when they were friends, he wrote poems about him and was saddened when his duties as a member of the Space Garrison got in the way of them hanging out with each other.
  • His death is played for sympathy as he spends his final moments calling out Taro’s name in sorrow to which Taro in response calls out his name as well out of sympathy.

Trivia[]

  • He is the final villain in the Heisei era to be Near Pure Evil.
  • He is the first and so far only Ultra to be Near Pure Evil.
  • His Parallel Isotope counterpart doesn’t count due to being from a parallel timeline where he didn’t do anything heinous enough.
