Trofim Denisovich Lysenko is a minor playable character in the Hearts of Iron IV mod The New Order: Last Days of Europe. He is a former Soviet scientist who later became a tyrant over Magnitogorsk, where he carries out his bizarre experiments to create a new race of supersoldiers.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • It is implied that, before the game's start, his policies when working for the USSR's government led to famines much like in real life.
  • After the USSR collapsed, he made an agreement with Stepan Bunkov and the 22nd Motor Rifle Division NKVD so that Bunkov's 22nd will kidnap people for Lysenko's experiments.
  • He performs several horrific experiments on unwilling human subjects, including women and children. Some of the experiments include:
    • Torturing people with cyanide exposure, starvation, oxygen deprivation, and the like.
    • Forcing test subjects to breed with one another, which is rape by proxy.
    • Isolating a baby from birth to test her speaking ability and then killing said baby.
    • Injecting people with drugs. One such drug caused a woman to scratch herself while screaming that "They're in her skin."
    • Forcing five people to go without sleep for several weeks while in isolation.
  • Though many of the events describing the experiments are censored in-game, the audience still sees enough detail of what the experiments are for it to not be "fridge horror."
  • In one event, Lysenko finds a note from one of the children he's experimenting on begging for his parents to save him, but Lysenko dismisses it as "propaganda."
  • He can form an alliance with Oskar Dirlewanger and the 36th Waffen Grenadier Division, where Dirlewanger will help invade Orenburg and the Ural League in order to gain more test subjects for experimentation, making him partially complicit in Dirlewanger's horrific crimes as well.
  • If Lysenko succeeds in conquering Orenburg and the Ural League, then he will backstab and kill his ally Dirlewanger and then experiment on his corpse.
  • In all of his possible endings, Lysenko will never show any remorse for his crimes.
  • Though he considers Dirlewanger a degenerate for his rapes and general barbarism, this just makes Lysenko a hypocrite since his forced breeding experiments are effectively rape.
  • While TNO has very high heinousness standards, Lysenko actions stand out within the Southern Urals coupled with his horrific experiments.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He is severely mentally ill to the point that it warps his perception of reality, giving him dubious moral agency. He is seemingly unable to understand that his experiments are unethical, and he legitimately believes that the horrible things he does to his test subjects are somehow helping them. He also experiences mental breakdowns if he does not perform his experiments every so often. However, he is still somewhat aware that his test subjects do not want to be experimented on, meaning he still has some degree of moral agency.
