He was portrayed by Joe Pesci.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He was a sadistic and psychopathic mobster who would kill anyone with his own hands for the slightest provocation.
- He attacked the restaurant manager and someone who was near the place after getting angry over a prank made by Henry Hill.
- He brutally beat Billy Batts with Jimmy Conway to a pulp and tried to shoot him in the mouth simply because he joked about his past as a shoe shiner. Hours later, he stabbed him about 9 times with a knife and allowed Jimmy to shoot him to death.
- He made fun of Henry for the fact that he couldn't bear the rotting stink from Batts's decomposing body. When he, Henry, and Jimmy went to dig it up, he made jokes that came close to making Henry vomit along with his boss.
- He shot a Spider in the foot and later killed him after Spider insulted him. Although his boss provoked him a bit about Spider’s response, Tommy’s own response to it even enrages Jimmy as well as shocks Henry.
- He helped Jimmy kill his teammates who aided him in the Lufthansa heist, killing most of them horribly.
- Although he had a girlfriend, he did not genuinely love her and threatened to kill her if he saw her with another man.
- Even though he is mostly friendly with Henry and Jimmy, he acts like an outright jerk to most people.
- His execution punishment wasn’t played for sympathy in any way.
- While he does have some comedic moments, he is still taken seriously within the story.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He loved his mother deeply, to the point where he always hid the fact that he was a ruthless mobster. She is also one of the few people with whom Tommy does not unleash his anger at in the least.
- He is endlessly loyal to Jimmy, having a genuine friendship with him and Henry, being genuinely affable towards them.
Trivia[]
- Thomas Desimone, the gangster who Tommy DeVito was based off of, was actually described as more heinous in real life. Not only did he commit all the same crimes in the film, but according to Hill, he killed random strangers just to try out new guns and even attempted to rape Karen Hill while her husband was in prison.
- Interestingly, in the film, Tommy had no problem killing Stacks, the driver of the Lufthansa heist, but in real life, Thomas did not want to go through with the murder due to being good friends with Stacks and had to be persuaded by Paulie to kill him.
