This Near Pure Evil was headlined on September 2023. | ||
| “ | Tighten: You can run, Megamind, but you can't hide! Mayor: We're saved. We're saved! What's your name, new hero? Tighten: It's Tighten. Mayor: Thank you, thank you! Tighten has freed us! Tighten: Oh, I wouldn't say "free." More like, under new management. |

| ~ Tighten's most infamous quote before taking over Metro City. |
| “ | You're so naive, Roxie. You see the good in everybody, even when it's not there. You're living a fantasy. There is no Easter Bunny, there is no Tooth Fairy, and there is no Queen of England. This is the real world, and you need to wake up! | „ |
| ~ Tighten's most famous quote which became an internet meme. |
Hal Stewart, better known as his supervillain name, Tighten, alternatively spelled as Titan, is the main antagonist of DreamWorks Animation's 21st full-length animated feature film Megamind.
He is the former cameraman of Roxanne Ritchi who later becomes a supervillain after he was hit by the serum of Megamind in an attempt to create a new superhero that went horribly wrong, as he merely desires to use his powers to earn Roxanne's love and when rejected, he decides to unleash his wrath on Metro City out of pettiness and desires to kill Roxanne. He is also Megamind's second arch-nemesis.
He was voiced by Jonah Hill.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Although he is very incompetent initially (as Minion points out that he never accomplished anything in life), this was before he's given superpowers and once he gained superpowers, he managed to become an even bigger threat than Megamind himself.
- Even before he became a villain, he already displayed sociopathic tendencies and several moments in the film that foreshadow that Hal is nowhere near as heroic like Metro Man as Megamind assumed him to be, such as:
- Him making numerous disturbing comments when trying to flirt with Roxanne like "I'd be watching you like a dingo watches a human baby!" and him trying to invite Roxanne to his house where they will be alone with a wedding photographer.
- Him telling Megamind and Minion that his neighbor had more valuable things than him when he thought they were going to steal from him.
- Him only training to be a hero under his Space Dad and Space Stepmom, who were actually Megamind and Minion, to be Roxanne's boyfriend rather than out of heroic intent.
- Him destroying some cars and even dancing while wearing one, uncaring toward the passengers inside, after being given powers.
- Him laughing while melting a Megamind dummy with his heat vision during his training, much to Megamind's horror.
- Him stealing a bunch of flowers to woo Roxanne and endangering her after revealing himself as the city's new hero by bringing her hundreds of feet in the air and dropping her so he could "save" her and earn her love.
- After Roxanne rejected him in favor of Bernard, who was actually Megamind in disguise, he lost all motivation to do good and went down a dark path by stealing a bunch of money, a bicycle and an arcade cabinet, and then tried to convince Megamind to join him as a sidekick after Megamind confronted him about it, saying that being a hero is a lot of work and "only for losers".
- When Tighten showed Megamind his drawing of them in new costumes with him as the muscular brawn and Megamind as the "brain with glasses," it showed that Tighten had Megamind on what looks like a neck collar and a purple leash or rope akin to that of a dog, showing he would treat him as a servant or even a slave rather than an equal.
- When Megamind revealed he was both Space Dad and Bernard, he fought him with the intent to kill him in cold blood instead of sending him to prison like Megamind wanted.
- During the battle, he caused not only a massive amount of destruction at Metro City but also caused a truck to crash and explode which possibly killed the driver, showing his disregard for other people.
- When the citizens came to celebrate him defeating Megamind and freeing the town, he said the town wasn't freed and was instead "under new management" before flicking the mayor with a slasher smile on his face, taking over Metro City as a result.
- He started terrorizing the city, destroying buildings, and possibly killing several civilians with the intent of destroying the entire city, forcing thousands of people to leave in a mass exodus because of the inevitable danger.
- When Roxanne came to reason with him, he tied her up to the top of Metro Tower so he could make it fall and kill her, before taunting Megamind from prison by making Roxanne call for help with the hope that he wouldn’t be able to rescue her in time.
- After Megamind, who was actually Minion, came to stop him, he tried to kill him along with Roxanne by throwing Metro Tower at them, which caused damage to several other buildings, and when he had thought he had killed Megamind, he tried to kill Roxanne with a bus.
- When he realized Metro Man was actually Megamind, he sadistically tried to kill him by using his superhuman strength and heat vision.
- He sent Megamind far into the sky to stop him from defusing and stripping him of his powers before proceeding to try to kill Roxanne one more time with his heat vision.
- While he did seem to love Roxanne at first, this is out of pure lust and obsession, and he subverted this when he tried to kill her with no remorse.
- The fact that he called "Bernard" an "intellectual dweeb" despite going after a genuinely smart woman is frankly absurd and further testifies to the fact that he never truly saw her in the slightest.
- While his rejection by Roxanne is initially played for sympathy during the part where he looked on with sadness as she dated Bernard, who was actually Megamind, he goes far past the sympathy by trying to destroy the city even though no one else was responsible for that, despite admitting to having gotten past his crush on her and moved on from it, making this reason too petty to justify anything he did, not to mention it shows how poor he is at taking rejection.
- While he has comedic moments, such as his famous quote "There is no Queen of England," and him dancing in his prison cell at the end of the movie, he is still played pretty seriously in-universe, with almost no one in-universe taking him as a joke.
- While the sequels introduce more heinous villains such as the Doom Syndicate trying to have all of Metro City suffocate and also making Megamind himself more heinous as well with him going along with the scheme, they have ambiguous canonicity due to having various contradictions such as Megamind having a completely different backstory of always wanting to be evil instead and Hal not being present at all in prison.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He relies on Fridge Horror, as some people are shown evacuating the city when he destroys it even if not all of them decided to stay out and it is unclear how many people he endangered and if he actually did hurt or kill anyone as a result. It is also unclear that him destroying Metro City would result in the deaths of everyone there.
- Due to never finding out that his "Space-Step Mom" was actually Minion, he still genuinely cares for her, as shown when he was angry at Megamind for "lying" to her regarding his false identity, and while he did blame Megamind for it - despite it being a masquerade that both Megamind and Minion were willingly partaking in - there's no pragmatic reason for this either, since whether he knew it or not, he wouldn't gain anything from it.
Trivia[]
- Tighten is the current icon of the Rename template.
- Due to the video games following a different continuity from the movies, his video game counterpart does not qualify as Near Pure Evil because he willingly redeems himself and becomes an ally to Megamind.
- He ultimately serves as a foil to Megamind, who is Near Pure Good contrary to Tighten's Near Pure Evil status. They were both destined to be different from what they chose to be at the end, with Megamind being destined to be a supervillain and Tighten being destined to be a superhero. They both had to face rejection from Roxanne. But while Megamind was capable of accepting rejection and eventually finds redemption after reconciling with Roxanne, Tighten couldn't handle it and turned into a far worse supervillain than Megamind. To put it simply, Megamind was a villain because he felt it was a role he was meant to fulfill due to his tragic childhood, while Tighten was a villain because of his own choice to overreact to being rejected by Roxanne.
