Leap upon me, O great Drizzt Do'Urden! Let your hatred flow to your blades. Let me prove who is stronger.
~ Tiago to Drizzt during one of their confrontations.

Tiago Baenre is a major antagonist in The Legend of Drizzt, serving as a major antagonist of The Neverwinter Saga, one of the two main antagonists of The Companions Codex (alongside Hartusk), and a major antagonist of Homecoming. He is a member of drow House Baernre in the city of Menzoberranzan, and one of the most skilled warriors in the city. He worked as an agent of his aunt, Quenthel Baenre, although his glory hounding tendencies led to him having a personal obsession with defeating and killing Drizzt Do'Urden.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

Past/General[]

  • He is a massively contemptuous egotist and makes this clear in almost every interaction he has, where he is almost always condescending and mocking. This is what motivates most of his actions.
  • He is extremely sadistic and takes obvious pleasure in every evil thing he does.
  • Although he works under his aunt and she is one of the few people he shows any respect to, this is not out of loyalty, and more because he knows she could kill him in an instant.
  • He absolutely despises his wife Saribel Xorlarrin, who he was forced to marry under Quenthel's orders. He constantly belittles and mocks her, trying to do everything he can to make her life miserable.
  • Before he first appeared in the series, he murdered every other formidable fighter in Menzoberranzan in battle in order to prove that he was superior.

The Neverwinter Saga[]

  • Under Quenthel's orders, he travelled with House Xorlarrin to the abandoned dwarf city of Gauntlgrym where they wanted to establish a city of their own, thus desecrating the dwarven ruins.
    • During the journey, he consistently belittled and mocked the Xorallarrins.
  • He planned to murder his brother Andzrel to take his position in House Baenre.
  • He led an attack against the shadowvar soldier led by Herzgo Alegni because they trespassed on drow territory.
  • After briefly meeting renegade drow Drizzt Do'Urden, he became obsessed with killing him for the glory it would bring him.
  • Although he saved the town of Brynn Shander from the demon Errtu, this was simply because Errtu attacked him and killed his lizard, and not because he cared for the people living there. He even mentioned that he enjoyed the chaos Errtu brought, although he did relish the praise that the townsfolk gave him after the demon's defeat.
  • He threatened to murder a ferryman if he did not take him across a river.

The Companions Codex[]

  • He led an attacked on the town of port Llast and killed most of the citizens so that he could capture a small group that had once travelled with Drizzt and bring them to House Xorlarrin.
    • He had the town burned to the ground simply for fun, forcing the remaining citizens to become refugees.
  • He and his uncle Gromph took the peaceful orc king Lorgru off of the throne of Many-Arrows and put the warmongering Hartusk on. Hartusk immediately declared war on all the neighboring nations, launching the entire region into a bloody conflict that costed thousands of lives. This was Tiago and Gromph's plan.
    • When Hartusk held several dwarven strongholds under siege for months at a time, Tiago worked to make sure the dwarves stayed imprisoned.
  • Tiago worked the create alliances between Hartusk and the Frost Giants in the area to increase the death toll of the war.
  • Tiago eventually began riding a dragon named Arauthator, who he used to decimate Hartusk's enemies.
    • In particular, he almost single-handedly destroyed the city of Sundabar, tearing it down with his dragon and personally decapitating the king for all to see.
  • He helped the orcs conquer the city of Nesme where he crowned himself duke.
    • He had the weaker half of the citizens of Nesme killed and the stronger half used for slave labor.
    • When citizens tried to escape from slavery, he hunted them for sport, before taunting and mocking them as he slowly killed them personally of fed them to his dragon.
  • While hunting for Drizzt, he interrogated a woman who might have known where he was. She refused to give him any information, so he had an eight-year-old prisoner from Nesme brutally killed. After she finally gave him information, he had another child prisoner killed because she took too long to answer.
  • On one occasion he hunted Drizzt through the mountains on his dragon, although failed to kill him.
  • When the dwarves of various strongholds united for one final push against the orcs, Tiago tried to destroy the army with his dragon.

Homecoming[]

  • After Hartusk's defeat, Tiago allied with Doum'wielle Armgo, who also wanted Drizzt dead, and the two hunted him across the surface.
    • He forced Doum'wielle to have sex with him to show his power over her, until eventually she tried to kill him.
  • Upon his return to Menzoberranzan, Tiago raped the mentally unstable Dahlia Sin'felle multiple times simply to show those around him that he could do with no consequences.
  • He tried to have Braeling Janquay, a mercenary working under him, killed because he didn't trust him.
  • He tried to kill Drizzt on two more occasions, each time taunting him with his other crimes before they fought.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil[]

  • He had an uncharacteristic affection for Byok, his giant lizard steed. When Byok was killed by Errtu, Tiago nearly vomited and cried, and briefly held out hope that he might have somehow survived before Errtu decapitated his corpse. He then reflected on how he had raised the creature from birth and how he had always been brave and loyal to him, before killing Errtu on fury alone.
  • Although he started off just as condescending to them as he was to everyone else, Tiago eventually developed a respect and friendship with Ravel and Jaerth Xorlarin. By the end of the Companions Codex he was always bantering and joking with them, and when Jaerth died, Tiago's internal monologue briefly reflected on how no number of dead enemies would bring him back.
