~ Thoth Khepera welcoming Ra's al Ghul to her tomb, tricking him in secret. |
Thoth Khepera is a one-shot antagonist in Batman: The Animated Series, serving as the main antagonist of the Season 2 episode "Avatar".
She is an ancient Egyptian queen who, according to legend, knew the secrets of life and death. Despite being buried by her subjects, Khepera stayed alive thanks to her immortality and from that point onwards started taking the souls of every explorer or adventurer who found her tomb, tricking them with the promise that she would teach them her secrets.
She was voiced by the late Nichelle Nichols.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Ruled two continents in the ancient Egypt, keeping control over a nation with her powers for one thousand years.
- Had the power of the Egyptian gods flowing through her, permitting her to make use of it to punish anyone like her subjects if they likely displeased her.
- If a hyeroglyphic of hers if of any indication, she could use her power sometimes to strip her subjects to the bone, overally being able to control the force of life and death with just a gesture.
- Used her tomb at the Canyon of the Tombs to kill any explorers or adventurers who discovered it, leaving their skeletons scattered over the tomb. Onscreen, more than 38 can be seen.
- For instance, Thoth Khepera killed a nice explorer by seemingly burning him alive in 1898 just for journeying into her tomb even though the explorer wasn't seemingly interested in uncovering her remains but in other artifacts present in the chamber, precluding his assistants from saving him by pulling his rope despite their intent, highly suggesting that she would also kill anyone who ventured into her tomb without ill intentions.
- Evidently came to merge some, if not all, of the souls of her victims in her room's pool, forcing them to form gooey abominations to attack her enemies to protect herself if the screams the abominations make are of any indication, putting them in a fate worse than death.
- Apparently left scrolls of hers containing secrets of life and death in her sarcophagus to be found by anyone who ventured into her tomb, which could have been dangerous had they been uncovered before rotting, but it's possible that she just used them as a bait for any victims so she could guide them to their dooms.
- Tricks Ra's al Ghul into kissing her to tell him her secrets, consuming his age and leaving him as a decaying old man (though to be fair, it's not like Ra's was a good person anyway due to his immoral obsession with immortality, although whether he deserved it or not is debatable as he had yet to become truly vile when he discovered her tomb).
- Tries to kill Batman and Talia al Ghul for coming to Ra's' rescue, planning to kill them for "defiling" her and even grabbing Talia with her gooey abominations.
- Although the DCAU's Heinous Standards are high, Thoth Khepera arguably stands out due to her high body count as evidenced by all the skeletons surrounding her pool. As for her resources, it seems like Khepera can't leave her chamber's pool as everything she does is commanded from there, restricting her into Earth like in Karkull's case.
- Her lines about referring to herself as "WE" instead of "I" could mean that her victims merged their respective consciousnesses with hers after getting their souls consumed, which would give her moral agency issues, but given how it's clearly evident that she turned some of her victims into her servants and how she said this while enticing Ra's al Ghul to join her, it's likely she just said so to persuade him into her trap.
What Prevents Her from Being Pure Evil?[]
- She lacks of sufficient characterization, as all her actual screentime is reduced to her scenes in her tomb and she has merely two lines, but she still shows a manipulative personality, making this a minor prevention.
Trivia[]
- Thoth Khepera is, alongside Aresia and Paran Dul, one of the three Near Pure Evils of the DC Animated Universe to be female. She is also the only one without redeeming qualities.
