Why would a god take orders from anyone at all?
~ Robert "Bob" Reynolds/Sentry as The Void to Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
You thought you were gonna be some great man? Some savior? You can’t even save yourself. We will always be alone.
~ The Void speaking to Bob.

The Void is the main antagonist of the 2025 Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero film Thunderbolts*, based on the Marvel Comics antiheroic team of the same name.

He is a mysterious dark entity that lives within the psyche of his arch-nemesis, Robert "Bob" Reynolds, whom Valentina Allegra de Fontaine dubs as the Sentry, a super-powered amnesiac individual more powerful than all of the Avengers, who de Fontaine aims to replace with him after his creation in the Philippines. As the Void, however, the Sentry is completely shrouded in shadows, is invincible, spreads darkness and can turn people into shadows.

He was portrayed by Lewis Pullman.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • While his host body, Robert "Bob" Reynolds/Sentry is tragic because of his rough upbringing thanks to his abusive father's treatment towards him and his mother, The Void isn't tragic because he didn't experience that abuse; Bob did. The Void instead, was the accumulation of all the insecurities and the dark side Bob experienced due to said abuse and thus he has memories of it, but The Void doesn't seem to be particularly affected by it, being more motivated by his sadism and desire to rule as a god.
  • While the MCU has astronomically high Heinous Standards with the likes of the Red Skull, Ego, Erik Killmonger, Thanos and his alternate counterpart, Mysterio, Scarlet Witch and the High Evolutionary, The Void has very little screentime and manages to stand out with the unique crime of sadistically trapping all of New York City into a psychic prison where they all relive their worst traumas without respite, which he intended to subject to all of the Earth.

Thunderbolts*[]

  • Nearly pushes John Walker/U.S. Agent into suicide by jumping down an elevator shaft.
  • Takes over his host body to not obey Valentina Allegra de Fontaine when she commands him to publicly defeat the Thunderbolts by convincing Bob that they are beneath them and he has no obligation to obey mere humans like her because he is a god. While Valentina was indeed using Sentry for her own ends, The Void was likewise doing the same, but in a different way.
  • Pins Val against a wall with the intentions to kill her (though she deserved it) until her assistant Mel triggers his kill switch in an attempt to kill him.
  • Unleashes his powers over New York City's sky and turns people into shadows, a process that traps them within their own traumatic memories (as Bob, albeit inadvertently, had previously done so with Yelena Belova, U.S. Agent and Val when he accidentally made them remember how Yelena got her friend Anya killed by her handle, how U.S. Agent alienated from his wife Olivia and their son and how Val witnessed her father's murder when she was a child), where they are forced to relive the moment in their own psychic prison with nothing but deep personal despair, essentially a fate worse than death. All New Yorkers present on the city when he attacks are consumed by his shadows, even children such as the little girl that Red Guardian saves from his chaos.
    • By escalating his attack, The Void catches two helicopters with his influence, causing the vehicles to crash into nearby structures, which make debris rain down and nearly kill civilians down below whom the Thunderbolts barely manage to save (such as the little girl) before they are consumed by The Void's shadows.
    • Although Yelena, John and Bob manage to face their fears along with Ava, Alexei and Bucky as well (offscreen), while Valentina failed to face her fear, as she was too afraid to do so.
  • Torments sadistically Yelena (and presumably her fellow Thunderbolts who follow her offscreen) when she decides to confront his threat from within by making her relive her harsh Red Room training when she was trained as a Black Widow under General Dreykov's orders, such as when she led her friend Anya to her death at the hands of her handler or when she put together a gun quickly to not have her hands whipped unlike her classmates.
    • Shows Yelena glimpses and reflections of his host body's traumatic childhood, like a memory of the domestic violence Bob suffered on his father's hands that shattered him emotionally.
  • Physically attacks the Thunderbolts within the memory realm when they enter into the psychic space to help Bob with Yelena, where he shows them Bob's tragic childhood, his substance abuse and how The Void himself was created in a Philippines laboratory.
  • Restrains the Thunderbolts with different things while strengthening himself with Bob's aggression so no one can stop him, feeding off from conflict until Yelena and the Thunderbolts break free from their restraints and hug Bob, making him feel loved and accept and emotionally collapse to seal The Void away for the time being.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has moral agency issues, as the Void is ultimately the physical manifestation of all of Bob's negative thoughts, insecurities, and the abuse he has endured across his life, therefore he is Made of Evil and thus doesn't have any sort of moral agency other than being the worst of the worst for his host body. Even Bob himself admits that the Void represents his inner dark side.

Trivia[]

  • While The Void is currently Near Pure Evil, there is a chance this may change if he returns in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars as it has been announced that Lewis Pullman will be reprising his role as Robert "Bob" Reynolds/The Sentry for the former and reports have stated that the Sentry will play an important role in those films, so maybe The Void resurfaces in those if he factors somehow in Doctor Doom's plans if he finds useful to exploit the Sentry's powers for his own plans.
  • The Void is second Near Pure Evil of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be a malevolent alternate personality of a good or neutral character (in this case to Robert Reynolds), the first being the Green Goblin (who was that to Norman Osborn).
  • Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier originally considered to have the Red Guardian, Ghost and Bucky Barnes go through "shame rooms" of their own much like Yelena Belova, U.S. Agent and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine do in the finished film, with Red Guardian's being when he was thrown under General Dreykov's orders in the gulag, Ghost's being when she grew up in an orphanage as an outcast and Bucky's being an uncomfortable experience in the Boy Scouts of America. Had this idea been implemented (though it may have very well happened offscreen), this would have made The Void even worse.
