The Ultimate Evil, also known as Mr. Shadow, is the overarching antagonist of the 1997 French-American sci-fi film The Fifth Element. He is the embodiment of evil who hires Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg, the main antagonist, as his accomplice in order to retrieve the elemental stones and end all life.
He was voiced by an uncredited Tom Kane, who also voiced HIM in The Powerpuff Girls, and his 2016 counterpart.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Bribed Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg and the Mangalores into getting him the stones in order to commit omnicide (though this doesn't excuse their actions, as they were already evil and agreed), which results in multiple deaths.
- When a ship fired on him, he swallowed it, resulting in General Staedert and everyone on board dying, almost certainly meaning thousands of deaths were caused.
- What's worse is that Staedert bleeds and is in clear pain and terror while oozing black ooze, meaning the Ultimate Evil gave him a painful death for no reason.
- While Mr. Shadow does ask if he's disturbing Zorg and accept to pay more money, the first is a facade, as he raises his voice at Zorg and makes him bleed from underneath his skull, and the second is likely out of pragmatism, indifference, or outright lying.
- In fact, given the place where Zorg bled from is covered in a skullcap, and that he limps with a clanking sound, this implies the Ultimate Evil abused Zorg to the point he lost his hair and possibly has an artificial leg.
- Shows no care when Zorg and the Mangalores are blown up, instead going to Earth in order to stop the stones himself,
- Comes just within reach of the planet before he is killed by the Fifth Element.
- Given that Vito Cornelius states that the Ultimate Evil brings death where there is life, it is likely he would've gone back on his deal with Zorg and the Mangalores, killing them all as well as anyone they saved.
- Given his cooled down body looks similar to the moon, this gives the possibility the Ultimate Evil isn't dead yet, and will return in the next five thousand years.
- Unlike Zorg, the Ultimate Evil isn't even Laughably Evil, having little to no comedic moments. And like Zorg, he has no redeeming qualities or sympathetic past.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He has moral agency issues:
- Vito Cornelius says that he brings death where there is life, because he "is evil, absolute evil".
- When the President suggests shooting the Ultimate Evil, Cornelius says "Evil begets evil, Mr. President. Shooting will only make [him] stronger", which is proven true when the Ultimate Evil grows more after being shot by powerful missiles.
- Leeloo, the Fifth Element and the Ultimate Evil's antithesis, is activated by Corben professing his love, which results in her killing the Ultimate Evil and demonstrating his weakness to good emotions.
- However, it isn't disqualifying him from being Near Pure Evil, as the Ultimate Evil still displays a personality, with even some false politeness.
Trivia[]
- The Ultimate Evil is the only The Fifth Element villain to be Near Pure Evil.
