The cruel, disciplined warrior who strove to bring purity to the samurai by exterminating the imposter samurai within its ranks... and feeding them to dogs.
~ The description of the "Bloody Oni-Yamaoka" prestige cosmetic, describing Kazan and his goal of "puryfing" the samurai order.

Kazan Yamaoka, also known as The Oni, is the 15th Killer added in Dead by Daylight.

He was part of a family who had a high reputation in the Samurai culture in Japan, wishing to surpass his father's name. while also wishing to deal with farmers he thought were posing as samurais, he grabbed his father's katana, and goes on a crusade across the land, trying to find these "posers" before brutally murdering them.

He is voiced by Jean-Baptiste Garnier.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He went on a rampage across the land with the purpose to surpass his fathers name, in which, he would hunt down and kill several dozen farmers he thought were posing as Samurai, scalping them and stripping them of their armor in the process, these kills would be described as brutal and cruel by monks, making him feared across the land.
  • When he discovered a noble lord had given him the nickname "Oni-Yamaoka", he sought to kill him for giving him such nickname, also killing anyone who dared call him by such a name.
  • When an opposing samurai confronts him on his way to the noble, he slays him down, this Samurai would turn out to be his father.
  • After finding a statue of an Oni while wandering aimlessly around the woods after the murder of his father, he becomes overcome with rage and goes back to his mission of killing the noble.
  • When confronted by the dozens of Samurai's that had come to the lord's defense, he slaughters them all.
  • When finally confronting the lord, he proceeds to rip out his tongue for insulting him, before proceeding to butcher him.
  • When an angry mob of villagers all surrounded and attacked Kazan for the murder of their lord, it's heavily implied in his bio that he killed a lot of them before finally succumbing to his wounds.
  • While he was brutally assaulted by the villagers after finally succumbing to his wounds, it isn't played for sympathy, if anything, it's seen as a fair punishment for all the lives he delusionally and pettily took from other innocent people.
  • In his Akito's Crutch add-on, it's mentioned that he "punished" his young son's friend and her family for an injury he sustained while playing with her, given Kazan's petty nature, it's more than likely he assassinated them all.
    • This also makes him one of the few killers to have murdered children.
  • Upon being taken into the entity's realm, he hunts down and sacrifices survivors like any other killer.
  • While it could be argued that his crusade of killing people he thought were samurai posers to cleanse the samurai name makes him a well-intentioned extremist, it ultimately doesn't for the following reasons:
    • The main reason he went on his crusade was to surpass his father's name, not to mention that in the process he ignored both his father and the samurai code he had been taught, making his motives self-serving.
    • After his crusade, he couldn't get the idea that he was in the wrong upon noticing the negative reception of his actions by the people (As even his own father attempted to stop his plans), furthermore, upon hearing of the nickname the noble lord had given him, he was now motivated by anger over said nickname rather than the samurais name and reputation as he was before.
    • Even after he killed his father, and felt deep remorse for this action, the moment he comes across an Oni statue in the woods, he ignores the epiphany he was having, and goes right back to his mission to kill the noble lord, showing he now was motivated purely by anger and not any sort of respect for the samurai clan anymore.
    • Overall, even if Kazan genuinely believed that his actions were right, it only makes him worse by showing how utterly delusional he was.
  • While it could be argued that he suffers from off-screen villainy, some of his add-ons are trophies he took from his victims, such as the Scalped Topknot which is from a Samurai who questioned his honour, and the Bloody Sash, which was from blood from a boy who called Kazan "The Noble Impostor". with it even being mentioned he revels at the latter in secret, additionally, his mori (the method he kills survivors by his own hands) is the same way he executed the noble lord, preventing off-screen villainy from being the case.
  • Despite the high heinous standard of Dead by Daylight, with The Oni having to compete with the likes of The Doctor and The Trickster, The Oni manages to stand out due to the brutality of his kills, his high kill count, his lack of resources compared to other villains, and being one of the few killers confirmed to have harmed children, with the other confirmed being The Clown, The Huntress, and The Nightmare (However, The Nightmare is a crossover villain, and The Huntress didn't intend to kill them).

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He genuinely cares for several people:
    • He genuinely loved his father, as despite wishing to outshine him, he felt deep remorse over killing him, being the only person The Oni regretted killing.
    • He's shown to have cared for his young son Akito, as he was shown to be very protective of him, becoming enraged when he got a crippling injury when playing with one of his friends, "punishing" said friend and her family for such events, and frequently making long, perilous treks to a mountaintop shrine in order to pray for his son's recovery.
  • In one of his Memory Fragments from the game, he has a small "pet the dog" moment, where it's revealed that after he had massacred almost a dozen villagers who thought posed as samurai, he spared a teenage boy who displayed no fear and adopting the stance of a true samurai, even after the boy had stabbed him in the leg and called him an Oni, he decided to spare his life (albeit in a rather threatening manner), implying a sense of respect for the boy.
