NOTE: This page is only about the 2014 version of Thanos from the alternate timeline in Avengers: Endgame, as his future 2018 incarnation was not voted nor considered Near Pure Evil, and thus only the 2014 version of the Thanos' info and crimes should be put here. |
“ | Thanos: You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me. I thought by eliminating half of life, the other half would thrive. But you've shown me… that's impossible. As long as there are those that remember what was, there will always be those that are unable to accept what can be… they will resist. Iron Man: Yep, we're all kinds of stubborn. Thanos: I'm thankful… because now I know what I must do. I will shred this universe down to its last atom. And then, with the Stones you have collected for me, create a new one, teeming with life, that knows not what it has lost, but only what it has been given… a grateful universe. Captain America: Born out of blood. Thanos: They'll never know it… because YOU won't be alive to tell them. |

“ | In all my years of conquest, violence, and slaughter. It was never personal. But, I'll tell you now. What I'm about to do to your stubborn, annoying little planet. I'm gonna enjoy it, very, very much. | „ |

Thanos from the year 2014 is the main antagonist of the 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Avengers: Endgame and the overarching antagonist of the 2019 film Spider-Man: Far From Home.
He is the past version of Thanos from the year 2014 who arrived in 2023 via time travel. Deeming everyone as ungrateful after seeing how his future version wiped out half the universe and everyone hated him for it, he decided to destroy the universe and remake it so everyone will be grateful for what he has done.
Like his future counterpart, he was portrayed by Josh Brolin.
His Evil Ranking
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?
- He is the same as his 2018 version counterpart, meaning he committed the same crimes, such as:
- Proposing to kill half of Titan's population to save it from overpopulation. Even if he did want to save his planet, his methods of going about it were wrong as there were better solutions.
- Destroyed half of life in each planet he came across.
- Ruling over a region of space.
- Collecting children from some of the races that he conquered.
- Abusing and tormenting Gamora and Nebula while training them into becoming perfect assassins.
- Giving cybernetic enhancement on Nebula whenever she lost a fight with Gamora.
- Expressing his disappointment in Nebula and mentioning that he should kill her after being severely injured from a fall rather than comforting her.
- Deciding to wipe out half of life in the entire universe using the Infinity Stones.
- Planning Loki's invasion of Earth, providing him with an army, which resulted in the endangerment of millions of lives and hundreds of casualties.
- Forbidding Gamora from helping Nebula who was caught in a trap.
- Attempting to help Ronan the Accuser in his quest of getting the Power Stone for him in exchange of destroying Xandar.
- Somewhere before his introduction, he went on a massacre with his Double-Edged Sword.
- He had Nebula tortured for apparently developing a glitch.
- He kidnapped the future version of Nebula and had her 2014 counterpart impersonate her to infiltrate the Avengers.
- After arriving into the future, he obliterated the New Avengers Facility.
- He blamed the Avengers for being "ungrateful" for trying to undo his work, causing him to decide to destroy the entire universe and rebuild it in his own image with vast resources and life that will be forced to be grateful to him and that he will rule over it.
- He tried to rip Iron Man in half and stab Thor's heart, attempting to kill him while sadistically smiling over his near death.
- He gave a brutal beatdown to Captain America and broke his shield.
- He admitted that razing Earth and wiping out all its populace will bring him joy, unlike with every other conquest.
- He ordered a missile strike despite knowing the casualties that his army would face, killing many of his men in the process, and showing no concern whatsoever.
- He taunted Iron Man before snapping his fingers by claiming he's inevitable (just like his future version said before death), only failing because Iron Man managed to steal the Infinity Stones from him, making him directly responsible for his death as he had no choice but to sacrifice himself to defeat him and his army.
- Furthermore, by causing Tony's death, he is responsible for the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home since Mysterio seized the opportunity to get revenge on his former boss by staging Elemental attacks around the world, endangering thousands of lives just so he could stop them and be declared "the next Iron Man", and eventually exposed Spider-Man's identity and framed him for the attacks, also making him indirectly responsible for the events of Spider Man: No Way Home where Peter lost everyone he cares about.
- While he disparaged Ronan for seeing all Xandarians as a disgrace to the galaxy regardless of who they are, his standards are hypocritical since he harbored the same bigotry towards humans, viewing all of them as unruly and wretched. He even stooped to his level by trying to blow up the planet of a species he hates via the Infinity Stones with sadistic relish. He even claims Ronan is letting his obsession cloud his judgment, which shows his lack of self-awareness as this equally applies to him.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?
- He had a genuine tragedy of being banished from his home world and losing his entire race in spite of his efforts to save them and even after he decided to just destroy the universe, he still seems to genuinely believe that he would make a better one with grateful people afterwards.
- He has some legitimate care for others:
- He still cared about Gamora and intended to let her live along with him after he destroyed the universe.
- He also eventually developed care for Nebula as well upon hearing his 2018 version showing remorse for being so harsh on her, stopping Ebony Maw from killing her and giving her a chance to prove herself by retrieving the gauntlet, being proud when she succeeded. He was even concerned when Nebula didn't answer her transmitter, unaware that she was killed by her future self.
- Despite trying to kill them earlier, he showed genuine sadness after Tony snapped his army out of existence, including Ebony Maw.
- His death is played for sympathy, as Captain America showed him some pity; after watching his entire army die and turn to dust, he sat down and quietly accepted his fate while closing his eyes in sadness and watching the sunset one last time.
Trivia
- Although his 2018 counterpart is considered Inconsistently Heinous, this version of Thanos is considered Near Pure Evil for not displaying all of the redeemable qualities his 2018 counterpart had.
- Originally, he would have travelled back to the Chitauri Invasion of 2012, killed the Avengers there and returned to the present holding Captain America's severed head, which was cut for being too dark. If this was kept in the film, it would have made him even worse.
- It's Unknown if his next reincarnation, (set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday) King Thanos, will be NPE, IH or even PE.
