Tartarus is the secondary antagonist of Halo 2 and a major antagonist of the novels Halo: Contact Harvest, and Broken Circle, and a minor, yet pivotal antagonist of Halo: First Strike. He is the last known Chieftain of the Jiralhanae (more commonly known as Brutes) to serve in the Covenant Empire, and was the Hierarchs' chief enforcer and High Prophet of Truth's second-in-command. He is an archrival to Arbiter Thel 'Vadam.
He was voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson, who also voiced Demongo in Samurai Jack.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In Past / General[]
- In Harvest, he and the Covenant participated in the war with humans, with him killing dozens of them in the process.
- Besides his Brutes and the Prophets, he is ruthless and aggressive towards the other Covenant species, especially the Elites and Grunts. He even went as far as killing a few Grunts over petty reasons.
- He killed his wounded uncle Maccabeus in a duel and became the new Chieftain, which would lead the Covenant into many victories during the Human-Covenant War.
- Despite Halo’s insanely high heinous standards, Tartarus does manage to stand out due to having less resources than the Prophets and Thel 'Vadam.
Halo 2[]
- He and the Prophet of Truth would secretly scheme together to overthrow the Elites and have the Brutes as the Prophets’ new guardian.
- He executed his pilots when they discovered the Forerunner slipspace crystals to keep the secret from the rest of the Covenant.
- He tortured Thel ‘Vadam for failing to protect the Halo ring and branded him with the Mark of Shame.
- He brought Thel to the Prophets at the mausoleum of the Arbiter, expecting him to be executed.
- He captured 343 Guilty Spark and brought it to the Hierarchs.
- While he did save Thel, who is now the Arbiter, where he could have easily left him to die in the falling Threshold, it was for a pragmatic reason as the Prophets needed him for one more mission.
- After the Prophet of Regret’s death, he had his Brutes replace the Elites as the Prophet’s personal guards.
- He captured Miranda Keyes and Sergeant Johnson and retrieved the Sacred Icon.
- While the following two were done under Truth’s orders, Tartarus took a sadistic pleasure in doing so.
- Immediately after, he betrayed the Arbiter and had him executed on the spot, which Arbiter survived, thanks to the Gravemind.
- He ordered his second-in-command, Melchus, to massacre the Elite High Councilors and the rest of the species.
- He ordered his Brutes to kill other human prisoners as he took Miranda Keyes as the key to activate the Delta Halo ring.
- He threatened to rip Guilty Spark's eyes out of its socket if it does not shut up. Then he threatened to do something even worse to Miranda Keyes if she does not activate the Halo ring (most likely physically torture her).
- He activated the ring even after Guilty Spark told him and Arbiter that the ring will destroy the entire galaxy.
- He attempted to kill the Arbiter one final time, killing at least a few of the Elites in the process.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He is genuinely loyal to the Prophets. While he is mostly loyal to Truth, he still respects the other Prophets. Like when he tried to save the Prophet of Mercy from being infected by the Flood and Truth stopped and ordered him to abandon Mercy, he was visibly hesitant and only did so out of respect for Truth.
- He has a brief moment of sympathy when learning the truth about the Halo Rings, seemingly realizing that what the Arbiter was telling him was in fact true, however his hatred towards his species got the better of him and continued to activate the Ring. Making this a minor prevention.
- He is good friends with his pilot Ritul. When Ritul’s ship is crashing down, Tartarus risked his life to save his friend from the cockpit, but it was too late.
