| “ | Let's get this storm started! Ooh! Hey! That's good. I should trademark that. | „ |
| ~ The Storm King's most famous quote. |
| “ | Remember, Tempest, only I have the power to make you whole. Make this twig work, and you'll get your reward. Fail me, and your horn won't be the only thing that's broken. | „ |

The Storm King is the main antagonist of Lionsgate's 2017 animated musical feature film My Little Pony: The Movie. He is the former master of both Tempest Shadow and Grubber.
He is a tyrannical conqueror who commanded a formidable army in his quest for power from lands beyond Equestria. His army, led by Tempest, invaded and conquered Canterlot so he could steal the magic of the Alicorn Princesses with the Staff of Sacanas so he could become all-powerful and take over the world. After he accomplished this task, he discarded all his servants, including Tempest, believing that he could rule the world with no-one at his side, but this decision ultimately led to his downfall and petrification.
He was voiced by Liev Schreiber.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- He showed no care or concern for anyone, not even his own generals or minions, only for himself, as seen in the climax of the film, where he created a powerful storm that swept away his Storm Guards and when he betrayed Tempest and tried to kill her.
- He infamously manipulated his army, including Tempest Shadow and Grubber, to get whatever he wanted. In the comics, he even presented himself as a benevolent leader in order to win their trust, which makes him indirectly responsible for their actions.
- In the comics, the Storm King confessed to having no interest in "ruling" anyone; he just liked to terrorize, pillage and destroy any civilization he came across, as well as collecting magical items to empower himself.
- Despite not appearing for a majority of the film, he is still the one who caused all of its events and his actions and motivations made it clear that he was a power-hungry warlord who wanted to rule the entire world.
- While he does have numerous comedic moments, they don't detract from his heinousness, as his crimes are well-played for horror and he is still taken very seriously as a threat for most of the time, with a few of these moments just showing how cruel and power hungry he is, such as him saying "it's kind of what I do" after he betrays Tempest and him mocking Twilight when she saves Tempest. Furthermore, he loses all his comedic traits by the time he loses control of the Staff of Sacanas.
Background[]
- Before the events of the film, he conquered and ruled over many lands beyond Equestria with an iron fist.
- He enslaved his subjects, putting them in numerous chains and cages and giving them miserable fates worse than death before he eventually destroyed the lands out of boredom, presumably killing thousands of people in the process.
- He also did it so with Capper's hometown and the kingdom of Hippogriffs.
- He enslaved his subjects, putting them in numerous chains and cages and giving them miserable fates worse than death before he eventually destroyed the lands out of boredom, presumably killing thousands of people in the process.
- When his second-in-command Strife betrayed him and teamed up with his rivals, Captain Celaeno and her crew, enraged, he captured him and threw him overboard Calaeno's ship, killing him. He then enslaved Celaeno and her crew to become cargo-holders for him, causing them to lose their adventurous spirits.
- Strife betraying him is not played for sympathy since he brought it on himself for mocking friendship and revealing he doesn't truly care about his soldiers.
- He is shown to be abusive towards his servant/minion Grubber as he only placed him as a temporary 2nd-in-command because he knew he was too cowardly to rebel against him.
- After he confronted Tempest and she told him about her broken horn, he manipulated her into becoming his new second-in-command and tricked her into thinking he'd restore her horn if she helped him become powerful, making him indirectly responsible for her actions and he would eventually betray her once she was no longer useful to him.
My Little Pony: The Movie[]
- He sent his entire army, led by Tempest, to invade and conquer Canterlot and capture the four princesses for their magic, ruining the Friendship Festival and turning the city into an enslaved and damaged wasteland in the process.
- This attack on Canterlot traumatized Twilight and caused her to become very stubborn and reckless throughout the film. It was also the pure catalyst towards her trying to steal the Pearl of Transformation from Queen Novo, sparking the fight between her and Pinkie Pie.
- He threatened to kill Tempest if she did not capture Twilight before he arrived.
- Upon arriving at Canterlot, he painfully absorbed the magic from all four princesses by using the Staff of Sacanas, including Twilight's.
- He blasted Twilight out of her cage just to test his newly acquired powers.
- When the Mane Six came to rescue Twilight, alongside Capper, the Parrot Pirates and Princess Skystar, he crossed the Moral Event Horizon by creating a very massive and powerful tornado to destroy Canterlot. While he likely didn't anticipate that the tornado could suck everyone there, he nearly killed Twilight's friends and other allies and endangered some of his own men.
- When Tempest reminded him of their deal in which he was supposed to restore her horn, promising to continue serving him, he callously and sadistically betrayed her. He revealed his true nature as selfish and admitted that he had lied to Tempest about restoring her horn. He had only been using her as a pawn to do his dirty work, planning to kill her once she outlived her usefulness.
- This betrayal ultimately led to her redemption and resulted in him receiving his well-deserved karma. Tempest took revenge on him for betraying and lying to her, as well as for refusing to help her fix her horn. In a final act, she sacrificed herself, turning both of them to stone before he fell and shattered into pieces. Meanwhile, Tempest was rescued and returned to her normal self.
- In the comic adaptation, he immediately panicked when Tempest sacrificed herself to turn both of them into statues and pathetically begging her that he's changing his mind. It's clear he did this out of fear rather than genuine remorse or change of heart.

- After Twilight saved Tempest, he tried to finish both of them before he was intercepted by the Mane Six.
- He tried to get the Staff of Sacanas back in a fit of desperate rage before the Mane Six did.
- He attempted to turn Twilight and her friends into stone by throwing an obsidian sphere at them to prevent everything from being returned back to normal.
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic[]
- Even after his death, his invasion of the Hippogriffs gravely traumatized Silverstream to the point of being terrified at a hallucination of him during the Tree of Harmony's test before Gallus helped her overcome it.
My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Spring Breakdown[]
- He was indirectly responsible for the conflicts of the entire special, with his leftover storm magic having seeped into the human world and nearly getting the cruise ship the Humane Seven were on destroyed.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- As bad as he was, his worst action of attempting to destroy Canterlot with a massive tornado relied on Fridge Horror as it's never confirmed that anyone died, and while the Storm King did intend to destroy Canterlot, nothing indicates Twilight's friends and other allies would die and it's even shown that both Twilight and the Storm King were capable of surviving after being sucked. Without this, the rest of his crimes amount to generic conquering and attempted murder due to his previous murders of his conquers being merely implied and unconfirmed, and his role in causing the conflict in My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Spring Breakdown was too indirect and arguably unintentional.
Trivia[]
- He is the only MLP Near Pure Evil villains who appears in the movies.
- He, alongside King Sombra, is one of the two My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Near Pure Evils to die, and while Queen Chrysalis was turned into stone, nothing confirms she died.
- However, unlike King Sombra who was intentionally killed by the Crystal Ponies the first time and by the Mane Six the second time, the Storm King's death was mostly caused by himself.
