Steppenwolf is the main antagonist of the 2021 superhero film Zack Snyder's Justice League, the director's cut of the 2017 superhero film Justice League. He is the Apokoliptian military commander who was exiled from Apokolips due to his betrayal to his nephew and master Darkseid, the ruler of Apokolips.
In the hopes of redeeming himself to his master, Steppenwolf seeks out to destroy and conquer one hundred-thousand worlds, currently having to owe fifty-thousand more as a means to be accepted back into his family. Having learned of the locations of the Mother Boxes from Lex Luthor, he seeks out to find the three boxes and combine them to form the Unity, a source of powerful energy that would bring Earth to its fall.
He was portrayed by Ciarán Hinds, who also played Botticelli Remorso from The Tale of Despereaux.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to being Pure Evil?[]
- Plotted with a group of Apokoliptians to betray and overthrow Darkseid, only for him to have a last minute change of heart, slaughtering his fellow conspirators all in a bid to reaffirm his loyalty.
- Under the orders of Darkseid to undertake a crusade of penance, he was set to conquer 50,000 worlds, enslaving and killing their inhabitants. Some of the survivors of his attacks were transformed by him into monstruous Parademons to serve him.
- Slaughtered the Amazons that were protecting the Mother Box in Themyscira, stealing the box afterwards.
- Tortured and killed several Atlanteans in order to obtain the Mother Box in their possession.
- Kidnapped and tortured several employees from S.T.A.R. Labs to make them reveal the location of the Mother Box that was formerly in their possession.
- When he was inside S.T.A.R. Labs and Silas Stone took the Mother Box, and he locked with it, Steppenwolf was willing to kill him and that would lead Silas to sacrifice himself.
- Successfully synchronized the Unity, vaporizing Earth before Flash ends up reversing it.
- While his motive for taking over the Earth was to end his banishment from Apokolips, this doesn’t make him a Scapegoat as he was already a bloodthirsty tyrant before then, and in most of his scenes, he isn’t treated as anything more than that.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He is tragic as he was banished from his home world and told he must take over 50,000 planets before he could return by Darkseid, who was uncaring about whether he succeeded. This motive is played for sympathy at certain points, like how he was shown shedding tears when Darkseid told him that he would forgive him and allow him to return to Apokolips.
- He still respected Darkseid. While he betrayed him, he regretted doing so and tried to make up for it by killing his co-conspirators. When talking to Darkseid and DeSaad, Steppenwolf also kneeled before them, with no indication that it was hypocrisy.
Trivia[]
- Ironically, his Theatrical Version is Pure Evil.
