~ The Snake Baron preparing to violently massacre the town. |
The Snake Baron is a minor antagonist in the manga and anime Berserk. He was the ruthless baron of a village, as well as an apostle who enjoyed killing and hurting humans.
In the 1997 anime adaptation, he is voiced by the late Kan Tokumaru in Japanese and by Lex Woutas in English.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- It's heavily implied that he sacrificed one of his loved ones in order to become an Apostle, or he came out like this after being born from his behelit.
- In the Golden Age arc, he was likely on the prowl for humans when he was treading a forest, which scared away a number of wanderers in fears that the Snake Baron would kill and eat them.
- Like most apostles, he was involved in the Eclipse, killing most members of the Band of the Hawk so that Griffith could transform into the fifth God Hand member known as Femto. And he laughs with the other apostles when they witness Guts getting enraged when he's forced to watch Femto rape Casca out of spite.
- He neglected his duties as a baron, allowing his soldiers to abuse their power, which is made clearer in the 1997 anime where three of them assaulted an old man and sexually harassed his granddaughter before Guts killed two of them and spared the other to inform the Snake Baron that he was coming for him.
- It's made clear that he regularly had people from the village be sent to him to be killed in his dungeons, eating their meat after they died.
- When Guts entered the village, he passed by a cart of women and children being sent to him for said purpose.
- It's also implied that he also raped them first before killing them.
- When Guts entered the village, he passed by a cart of women and children being sent to him for said purpose.
- He ordered his men to wipe out all the people in his village to enjoy their suffering and death, even personally killing several of them, resulting in the deaths of dozens to hundreds of innocent people, including children.
- In the manga, he even started the massacre by cutting a child's body in half and drinking the blood of the upper half skewered on his spear, while the massacre itself had people being shot at by arrows and/or being trampled on by horses while the Baron ordered everything to be burnt.
- When fighting Guts, he decided to torture him by whipping him with his tail while taunting him about how weak humans were, before preparing to devour him alive.
- In his last moments, he tried to beg to Guts not to kill him, despite everything he did to both him and his village.
- He has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and while he may have had a loved one at one point, he is far past it now, especially since he most likely sacrificed said loved one to become an apostle.
- As the first major Apostle shown, he introduced the high heinous standard of the series by showing the sadistic and bloodthirsty nature of the Apostles.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Despite passing the general standards and having no redeeming qualities, he fails the heinous standard to multiple other characters like the Count, Wyald, and Bishop Mozgus, who tortured and killed more people in worse ways, with Wyald also raping people, with similar or lower resources. However, given his cannibalistic sadism, this is only a minor prevention.
