What did you say? Did you call me a businessman? You think I'm just a businessman? Do you think you know me, Doctor? Business? This is evolution. This is evolution of the human species. What are you doing bringing this? You know that BASH has over 40 million data points on you, on every decision you have made since 1994, Doctor? I... I know when you have colon polyps months before your doctor does. You got four or five at the moment actually. You know, they're not of concern, but I'd have a checkup as soon as you can. But much more importantly than that, I know what you are. I know who you are. My algorithms have determined eight fundamental consumer profile types. You are a lifestyle idealist. You think you're motivated by beliefs, high ethical beliefs. But you just run towards pleasure and away from pain. Like a... Like a field mouse. Our algorithms can even predict how you'll die. To 96... 96.5% accuracy. I looked you up after we met. Your death was so unremarkable and boring. I can't remember the details, apart from one thing. You're gonna die alone. Alone.
~ Isherwell's mental breakdown by scolding at Randall about "business".

Sir Peter Isherwell is one of the two main antagonists (alongside President Janie Orlean) in 2021 Netflix's satirical black comedy film Don't Look Up.

He is a tech billionaire, CEO of BASH Electronics and one of President Orlean's benefactors. In reality, he's also a greedy and opportunistic businessman who secretly discovers that the comet is comprised of rare-earth materials, wants to mine it and finally causes the comet to hit everyone.

He was portrayed by Mark Rylance.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Earlier in the film, he was portrayed as a kind and humble businessman that cares about children, and who wants to make the world a better place with his inventions. However, this was nothing more than a public persona to cover up his true identity as a hypocrite and megalomaniac person.
  • He ordered his subordinate to snatch the cellphones from the children in an arrogant way, showing how much of a hypocrite he is.
  • When the children expressed their gratitude and admiration for him, he didn't give any response to them, implying he didn't like them.
  • He manipulated President Orlean to cancel the mission to destroy the comet by detonating a nuclear warhead on it so that he could mine the comet's minerals and space metals for his own profit.
  • It's possible that he uses his influence and status as Orlean's political benefactor to force her to cancel the mission, implying that he's been controlling the moves of the US Government all along from behind the scene.
  • He corrupted almost the entirety of the US Government with his wealth and influence as the world's third richest person.
  • He said that the profit of selling the space minerals would be useful for curing poverty and world hunger but considering how manipulative and hypocritical he is, this once again was nothing but a false promise. His true intention was to raise his company's profit.
  • Because of his decision, the public went on an outrage, causing riots in multiple cities in the United States.
  • His decision also ruined Kate DiBiasky's life, causing her to be looked down by the society, even her own parents.
  • He rejects Dr. Mindy's advice to cancel the drone mission for safety, thinking that he knows better and smarter than anyone else. This carelessness would result in fatal consequences as the drones were actually imperfect and not ready for the mission, causing the comet to fall even faster to Earth.
  • He mocked Dr. Mindy by saying that he's not worthy to be a scientist and that he would spend the rest of his life and eventually die alone. Even worse, he said Mindy's death would be 'unremarkable' and 'boring'.
  • When Dr. Teddy Oglethrope told him that fellow countries like Russia, China, Japan and United Kingdom offered their assistance in a joint space mission, he refused their help so that he could exploit the minerals all to himself and refuses to share this with other countries.
  • When the drone mission failed, he left with the excuse to "go the toilet" while in reality, he cowardly ran away to his jet to get to the escape pod with the president, leaving the rest of humanity to die.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has few comedic moments throughout the film.
  • He somehow cared about Orlean, considering that she's the only person he brought to his escape pod.
