You are pathetic and weak!
~ Sindel
Oh Kitana. My first husband, your father was a fool. Jerrod believed that we were no better than commoners. He refused to assert the privileges of our throne. He traded away our power, our divine rights. Edenia grew weak and vulnerable. Then Shao Kahn invaded, embracing his power taking what was his. Here was a man unashamed to assert his privilege and who vowed to protect mine. I had found my true love and to consecrate our bond, I killed Jerrod for him.
~ Sindel to Kitana revealing her betrayal, that she killed Jerrod herself and married Shao Kahn on her own desires.

Sindel is a major character in the Mortal Kombat franchise, serving as a major antagonist in the the Alternate Timeline.

She is the mother of Kitana and the former queen of Edenia before it was conquered by Shao Kahn. Though initially believed to be a good and kind wife, brainwashed by Quan Chi's magic and forced to be Shao Kahn's wife against her will, it is later revealed that she is nothing more than a selfish, sadistic and traitorous monarch who was already evil from the beginning, and willingly betrayed her husband in favor of Shao Kahn, solely to remain in power and not lose her privilege.

She was voiced by Lani Minella in Mortal Kombat (2011), Kelly Hu (who also voiced Frost in the same game) in Mortal Kombat X and Mara Junot in Mortal Kombat 11.

Her Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • Although she falls in love with Shao Kahn, and they get along without arguments, her unwavering loyalty and obedience to him stem from a bond that is deeply rooted in fanaticism and a shared taste for sadism.

Background[]

  • When she was Queen of Edenia, she banished all Cryomancers from her realm to Outworld for no good reason other than sadism, although she may have also presumably did so to make sure they don't exposed her true nature to the public.
  • Pretends to be a good person and turns her back on Edenians, despite being one herself, yet she felt, albeit correctly enough, that Edenians are actually just Nephilims who managed to survive the Great Flood and started infesting Edenia, which itself is really Eden.
  • She willingly Betrayed and killed her husband, King Jerrod when Shao Kahn threatened to take over their kingdom, revealing her true colors.
    • Even before Edenia was taken over, Sindel was tired by the idea that she and Jerrod are not entitled to their royalty, since Jerrod himself believed that being so would make them no better than commoners. This shows that Sindel was ambitious, power-hungry, and spoiled from the get-go.

Mortal Kombat (2011)[]

  • After being revived by Quan Chi, she leads the Lin Kuei Cyborgs, including Cyrax and Sektor in an attack on the Earthrealm warriors.
  • When they're defeated, Sindel takes matters into her own hands, where she single-handedly slaughtered most of the heroes, including her own daughter, Kitana, whom she fatally wounds.
  • When Kitana desperately pleads her mother to come back to her senses, she cruelly ignores her and mocks her, then drains her soul, which eventually killed her.
  • Her second death via Nightwolf's suicide was deserved, since she killed almost all of his allies.

Mortal Kombat 11[]

  • Though she was revived by Sheeva, Fujin, Nightwolf and Shang Tsung, stating to Kitana that she never abandoned her family, and even helping them retrieve Kronika's crown, this was revealed to be nothing more than her feigning her good personality.
  • Shortly after defeating Cetrion and retrieving Kronika's crown, she is seen secretly plotting with Shang Tsung to get the crown for themselves, even calling her daughter a "fool" for siding with Raiden.
  • When Shao Kahn was being held captive and tortured by two Shokans, she killed them both and rescued Shao Kahn, planning to soon overthrow Kitana and rule Outworld under their tyrannical rulership once more.
  • When Sheeva overheard and discovered her true nature, she fought and killed her, even though she helped revive her.
    • What makes this even more despicable is that Sheeva was her life-long bodyguard and did truly love her queen, yet she simply did not care.
  • Tricked the Shokan army into following her while lying to them about who killed Sheeva.
  • When she and Shao Kahn defeated Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade and Cassie Cage, they intended to turn them into slaves in their new empire and breed more warriors.
  • Shames her own daughter Kitana for, in her eyes, being weak and along with Shao Kahn, overthrowing her and taking over Outworld again.
  • Attempts remake the universe with Shao Kahn using the hourglass.
  • Though she and Shao Kahn were both betrayed and killed off by Shang Tsung during her third death, they fully and completely deserved it.

Mortal Kombat 1[]

  • Assists Titan Shang Tsung in his plot to destroy Liu Kang's new timeline and conquer the entire multiverse.
  • Kills her good counterpart from Liu Kang's new timeline before mocking her daughters about it.

What Prevents Her from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • She fails Mortal Kombat's Heinous Standards to characters like Quan Chi, who did worse than her such as killing the entire Shirai Ryu and leading Scorpion to believe it was Sub-Zero who was responsible for it, though not too much.

Trivia[]

  • Sindel's retconned backstory in Mortal Kombat 11, which turned her into a Near Pure Evil woman even before being corrupted, was met with disdain and resentment by the fans as they felt it ruined her original story from being a good figure who was corrupted by evil and made her role as a villain feel forced.
  • Sindel is portrayed to be much more villainous in Mortal Kombat 11 than any of the other games, being depicted to have never been a good person from the start and rather being a ruthless and highly self-centered tyrant who looks down on others as shown when she expresses disgust towards her daughter for dating Liu Kang, whom she considers a peasant.
  • Sindel is the very first female kombatant from the Mortal Kombat franchise to be Near Pure Evil.
  • Her rebooted Mortal Kombat 1 counterpart cannot count as Near Pure Evil due to being reformed by Liu Kang.
