His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

Exclusive to the Second Timeline[]

  • Even before he met Kisaki, he was a lone gangster who heavily committed street violence across Tokyo as he was first seen having to beat up a whole group of gangsters in front of a crowd.
  • He helped Kisaki to ambush Draken as he instigated and led a gang fight between Moebius against Toman, even threatening all members of Moebius that if they dare to leave or run, he'll brutally kill them.
  • He sadistically attempted to kill Mikey under excitement during their fight.
  • He allowed Masataka, a former Toman member used by Kisaki, to assassinate Draken during the gang fight as part of the ambush.
  • He sets down a loyalty test for Keisuke Baji to join Valhalla by having him beat up Chifuyu Matsuno in a very brutal manner. Despite Baji holding a strong facade and knew of Kisaki's nature without Hanma knowing, he was still pleased with it.
  • Had Kazutora brought Takemichi to demand answers if Baji was only joining Valhalla as a spy, even threatening to have him become the next victim to the loyalty test.
  • He instigated and led a fight between Valhalla against the Tokyo Manji Gang as part of Kisaki's plan to kill Baji, allowing some of Valhalla's members to track down Mikey during the fight while Hanma distracted Draken as he fought him sadistically.
  • He would order Kazutora by stating that Baji is betraying Valhalla under Kisaki's orders to him having the latter stab Baji and slowly kill him from the fatal wound, not before Baji took his own life, as a result, to save Mikey from nearly being corrupted and beating Kazutora to death. However, other than Baji's death as a result, also led to Kazutora's arrest.
  • Although he and Kisaki helped Takemichi and Chifuyu take down the Black Dragons in an attempt to prevent Hakkai's attempt to murder Taiju, he only did it under pragmatism to further Kisaki's next plans.
  • He and Kisaki would betray Takemichi and Chifuyu as he beat Chifuyu and had him tied up to not let him intervene with Taiju's murder by Hakkai's attempt.
  • After being found out of their treason reported by Chifuyu, Hanma would threaten Mikey that if Kisaki goes, he goes as well with all their members from Valhalla and Moebius alike, leaving Toman to decrease back to a fifty, even though Mikey was okay with it.
  • He assisted Kisaki in killing Emma Sano, Mikey's half-sister, during a hit and run. Despite he was only assisting him and was questioning Kisaki about getting his hands dirty, he still went along with the murder, having no remorse whatsoever.
    • In addition, Emma's death was the final straw for Mikey to embrace his "dark urges". This would also make Hanma responsible for Mikey's corruption and the existence of Bonten alongside Kisaki, who was Emma's murderer.
  • Before and after the fight between Toman and Tenjiku after Kisaki betrays and murders Izana, Hanma snatches Kisaki and escaped when Mikey approached him with a vengeance before Takemichi and Draken caught up to them.
  • He would fight Draken as a distraction for Kisaki to escape.
  • Upon being recruited into the Kanto Manji Gang and during the battle against Toman, now led by Takemichi, Hanma brutally assaults Hakkai Shiba and Atsushi Sendo as he prepares to take down Chifuyu and Mitsuya.
  • Though he does appear genuinely shocked when Mikey knocked Sanzu (who is an ally of his) out and even called him out on it. That doesn't mean he has any standards at all, as he never called out on Kisaki betraying the people closest to him, including Toman, and never called on him using others for his benefit, including himself (Though it was most likely out of loyalty towards him). He likely said that out of pragmatic reasons, as Mikey hurting/killing his allies/pawns would reduce the number of members in Kanto Manji Gang, including the most useful pawns, and become less powerful to crush Toman and doesn't truly hold any loyalty towards Mikey as he was an enemy of him the moment they first time met.
  • In the third timeline, it is shown that Hanma is no longer the same person and even got a decent job as a freelance photographer. This doesn't mean he automatically redeemed himself since both versions from the second and third timeline are a completely different and separate people, so the second timeline has stayed evil until the entire second timeline was altered, which declares that the second timeline counterpart is deceased since the third timeline doesn't seem to be anything like his alternative (though he still has that personality where he views things boring as he stated when he arrived to Takemichi's and Hinata's wedding, though still went to "celebrate").
  • Unlike Kisaki who had a Freudian Excuse, including most antagonists who had redeeming qualities or a tragic background, Hanma has absolutely none. He only joined and partaken in Kisaki's plans because he was bored and is willing to find excitement if it meant causing violence in the public and towards other gang members, showing that he's been evil since the beginning.

Shared with his Future Counterparts[]

  • In one of the alternative timelines of the future, he and Kisaki successfully took over and corrupted the Tokyo Manji Gang into a powerful criminal organization after Kisaki successfully managed to manipulate and corrupt Mikey.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Most of his crimes were followed through and ordered by Kisaki since he was a pawn to him, thus not having his own unique set of crimes despite having been also responsible for some of the actions committed indirectly and directly for Kisaki that had connections to Mikey. However, Hanma still enjoyed committing said crimes to please his own sadistic amusement and for thrills, so this is rather minor.
  • He is truly loyal and admires Kisaki. He stated that every time he schemed and planned the events, it gave him the thrills he wanted, much to Kisaki's puzzled dismay towards him. Although it is albeit twisted and certainly minor, it is backed up with him mourning his death after seeing his corpse, saying he died greatly, which actually paints him a sympathetic light due to genuinely viewing him as a friend. He then visited his grave to fulfill his promise of telling him why he followed him, showing a bit of honor.

Trivia[]

  • Only the past counterpart of Shuji Hanma can be considered Near Pure Evil, as his future counterpart can't since he barely does anything heinous and throughout the different future timelines, only for the second and third.
  • His live-action film counterpart doesn't qualify as Near Pure Evil due to his limited screentime of only viewing the events of Toman vs Moebius instead of leading it, as well as witnessing Akkun's suicide that was induced by Kisaki's abuse. However, he may have the potential in the upcoming sequel.
