“ If you want me to drop the barrier, you'll have to get on your knees and beg. „
~ Shinji Matou to Shirou Emiya when he tells him to drop the magical barrier he built around the school in Fate/stay night.
“ I have to tell Emiya about this. About how you begged, pleaded for me to have my way with you over and over. I'LL TELL HIM ABOUT EVERYTHING! ABOUT EVERY SINGLE TIME WE F***ED!! „
~ Shinji Matou about to rape Sakura Matou and his last words to his adopted sister, before she kills him in the Heaven's Feel anime.

Shinji Matou is a major antagonist of Fate/stay night. He is the egotistical and sexually abusive adopted older brother of Sakura Matou and the former friend-turned self proclaimed love rival and archenemy of Shirou Emiya who resorts to any dangerous means necessary, including trying to kill his former friend just to prove to his ominous and manipulative grandfather Zouken Matou that he is not completely worthless and is a worthy heir for his family's legacy.

In the original anime adaptation, he is voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya in Japanese and Doug Erholtz in English. In the Unlimited Blade Works anime, he is voiced by Kyle McCarley, who also voiced Simon Laurent from Infinity Train, Ryo Asuka from Devilman Crybaby, and Regulus Corneas from Re:Zero-Starting Life in Another World.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

All Routes[]
  • Due to being part of the Matou family, he believed himself superior to everyone else, which resulted in his arrogant and jerkish attitude.
  • While he originally treated Sakura well, his care for her was not genuine as he only “liked” her because of how pathetic he thought she was. Her existence made him feel superior to his failure of an adopted sister. Once he found out she was the true heir, any true care was subverted.
  • After finding out about Sakura being the heir, he proceeded to unfairly blame Sakura for ruining his dreams and proceeded to physically, sexually, and mentally abuse her for the next three years purely out of spite and to make himself feel superior.
  • His dispicable actions makes it clear that he has no intentions to redeem himself. Any demise and/or punishment he recives is played for satisfaction.
  • While he did have a friendship with Shirou, he subverted said friendship by attempting to kill him multiple times.
    • He is also implied to be sexually abusing his own servant, Rider as well.
Fate Route[]
  • While he offers to partner with Shirou, this is not genuine as he lies to Shirou about him setting up the Bloodfort at the school and would have likely betrayed him.
  • Activated the bloodfort at the school, which melts the skin of people it effects and drains their life force, essentially slowly and tortuously killing them. Shinji used this with his own classmates at his own school.
  • Taunts Shirou by revealing that he knocked out Fujiumura for begging Shinji to save the students. He then sadistically states she will be the first to die. This is especially personal given that Fujimura is Shirou’s legal guardian.
  • Attempts to have Rider kill Shirou, and if he succeeds in mortally wounding him, he leaves him to die even though Rider tells him he could still be healed. Proving he had not truly cared about his former friend, despite their long history together.
  • Has Rider attempt to kill Saber and even tells him he will kill Sakura after he is dead.
Unlimited Blade Works Route[]
  • Teams with Gilgamesh and helps him kill Illya, laughing sadistically when Gilgamesh brutally murdered her.
  • Tries to rape Rin only to be stopped by Lancer.
  • While he seems to have a better relationship with Sakura at the end of the UBW route, it is never said if he felt remorse for his actions, and the nature of his change is vague at best. It is also worth noting that even if he became more tolerable, it was most likely for pragmatic reasons as he obtains magic circuits at the end of the route.
Heaven's Feel Route[]
  • Has Rider eat Civilians in an attempt to make her stronger.
  • Comes to Shirou's home and hits Sakura, demanding she come home.
  • Kidnaps Sakura and blackmails Shirou to come to the school alone. He then orders Rider to kill Shirou.
  • Cowardly orders Sakura to kill Rin and Shirou despite him not holding up his promise to not harm Shirou.
  • Tries to kill Sakura by activating the worms in her body to kill her.
  • When Sakura returns to the Matou house, he attempts to rape her and when she resists, he proceeds to beat her. He then attempts to blackmail her by saying he will tell Shirou about him raping Sakura for the last three years if she fights back. This causes Sakura to snap and kill Shinji, driving her into a heavy breakdown and having her accept her dark side, thus making Shinji indirectly responsible for Sakura’s fall to the dark side and becoming Dark Sakura.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has a genuinely tragic backstory, being born into the Matou Family without being able to practice sorcery and was deliberately mislead into thinking he could be the heir of the Matou Family only to discover that Sakura was the heir not him causing him to hate his sister and with a need to prove he was worthy to his grandfather. Although it is worth mentioning, this is a minor prevention, he was already a mean-spirited narcissist before becoming evil and while he did treat Sakura decently before it was only to make himself feel superior.
  • He fails the heinous standards to both Gilgamesh and Zouken because they commited mass rape and Zouken's case of commited pedophila and cannibalism.
