It is unforgivable! But... that's probably where the King is... You fail as a Royal Guard not because you didn't know his whereabouts... but because you didn't go there even though you knew! | „ |
| ~ Pouf berating himself for not finding Meruem, who went to protect Komugi when the palace is attacked. |
Shaiapouf, also known as Pouf, is one of the three secondary antagonists (alongside Neferpitou and Menthuthyoupi) of the Chimera Ant arc in the manga series Hunter x Hunter and its 2011 anime adaptation. He is a butterfly-like Chimera Ant who is one of the Royal Guards to his king Meruem.
He is an overprotective and fanatical bodyguard to his king. However, unlike the other two guards, who would eventually grow more humane as the story arc progresses, Pouf grew to become far worse and arguably becomes the evilest member of the guard trio due to his vile actions.
He was voiced by Wataru Hatano in Japanese and by Chris Niosi in English.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He and the rest of the Royal Guards abandoned the Queen after she'd been critically injured from giving birth to Meruem.
- Alongside Pitou, they turned Palm into a Chimera ant hybrid and brainwashed her to be loyal. Later, he tried to manipulate her into killing Killua, and seeing Palm as a brainwashed Chimera Ant caused Killua to break down in helplessness in knowing he could do nothing to help Gon.
- Using his cocoons, he turns 5,000 people in Chimera ant hybrids.
- His Nen aura nearly drives Knov insane and caused his body to age several years.
- He considers killing Komugi early on due to being a hindrance.
- After Morel releases his Smokey Jail, Pouf mocks Morel for his decision, stating that he'd overestimated the Hunter and steals his pipe to throw into the river.
- He uses his scales to brainwash 46,613 civilians for the sorting.
- He greatly disapproves of the positive changes that Komugi's influence causes in Meruem's personality, making him gain more humanity.
- When the king forgets about Komugi, he attempts to kill her to prevent him from giving up his quest of world domination.
- He tricks Pitou into believing that Komugi had been rescued, which caused Pitou to try and kill Gon and resulted in Gon sacrificing all his potential to gain the power to eliminate Pitou.
- He later attempts to prevent the king from learning about Komugi by claiming he could not question Welfin.
- Upon his death, the termination of the effect of his scales killed all 46,613 brainwashed civilians.
- Although he has some comical moments, like his exaggerated reactions, shouting about Lord Meruem with an exaggerated tone and his small shape butterfly, his faces, he is still taken seriously and these moments just show how insane and evil he is.
- Overall, he is the Royal Guard with the least amount of development or redeeming qualities. While Meruem, Pitou and Menthuthuyoupi all began to show respect for humanity and developed a sense of honor, Pouf was the only one who never grew from his experiences or saw the error of his ways. Even after having sensed how deeply Meruem loved Komugi, he showed no remorse for his actions or having lied to Meruem, and he breaks down in tears when Meruem wishes that Welfin would live a human life.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Despite his devotion for Meruem being his twisted, causing him to go behind his back, he still does genuinely care for him. This is seen by Pouf's willingness to die if Meruem did not allow him to treat his injury and when he feeds parts of his own body to Meruem so that he could be revived. Also, Meruem could read Pouf with Spiritual message and spoke highly of his loyalty even after he kept Komugi from him, which shows that Pouf's care (no matter how twisted and toxic it is) was in fact genuine.
- Although he also was willing to abandon, deceive, such as Pitou or test the loyalty of the others royal guard, such as Youpi, he still cared for the other members of the royal guard and respected them for their mutual desire to protect the king. He had the closest bond with Youpi in particular, as they placed the protection of Meruem above their own lives, sacrificing most of their strength and later, unknowingly, their own lives for his resurrection. He was also genuinely shocked and horrified by Youpi's death and wanted to destroy their enemies instead. Even if he abandoned and deceived Pitou to get rid of Komugi, he still firmly believed that she could easily defeat Gon and fulfill her duty as a bodyguard once she was free of the burden of protecting Komugi.
