Easy-peasy. The law is just a big pushover. The country would be up a creek if a firefighter was found guilty. No sweat.
~ Setsuo before turning into an Infernal.
That's right. When I was a firefighter, I used to save people like this. I just saved your life. One might say that it now belongs to me, right? That means I can do whatever I want with you, right?!
~ Setsuo's philosophy.

Setsuo Miyamoto is a supporting antagonist in Fire Force. He is a former firefighter who snapped and murdered several people, before transforming into an Infernal in court. Unlike the other Infernals, who are tragic and suffering, Setsuo is sapient and retains the homicidal tendencies of his original self, believing himself to be more human than any other Infernal.

He is voiced by Kanehira Yamamoto in the Japanese version and Brendan Blaber in the English dub.

His Evil Rankings[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He killed four people for his personal amusement, which got him arrested and sentenced to court.
  • He showed clear moral agency despite all of the factors such as being insane and becoming an Infernal, since he is sadistic and cunning and exploits laws to his own advantage. When he got away with an insanity defense, he thought to himself how easily he was able to fool the law. As an Infernal, he had such a strong attachment to life that he became a sapient Infernal.
  • When Setsuo transformed into an Infernal in court, he killed two people who mocked him, then confronted the judge whom had helped him only to strangle him to death, proclaiming that he was the judge now.
  • He grabbed his lawyer whom he spared by his teeth, telling the lawyer that he was at his mercy after saving him, so Setsuo had the right to do whatever he wanted to him, until Shinra Kusakabe intervened.
  • He saw a woman crying out when Special Fire Force Company 8 came to help, and told her that the Fire Force wasn't here to help her, only kill him, only to hypocritically attack her.
  • He attempted to surrender when Special Fire Force Company 8 came to stop him and tried to mess with them psychologically, calling them murderers for killing Infernals and saying that the judge spared him, despite being a murderer himself and killing the judge in mention while not caring about his verdict. After Takehisa Hinawa fired a bullet at him with distrust, Setsuo told the Fire Force that he would kill humans like the Fire Force kills Infernals.
  • While Takehisa and Shinra considered Setsuo's point about Infernal ethics due to challenging the belief that Infernals should be killed even if they don't do any harm, this is ultimately hypocrisy and delusion on Setsuo's part since most Infernals are suffering and never wanted to become monsters, while Setsuo embraced his transformation and used it to act upon his desires. It's never hinted that Setsuo sympathized with Infernals prior to becoming one himself, and even then he only cared about himself as an Infernal due to his sapience and using his Infernal status to justify his own actions.
  • He went on a rampage in the city, and when Shinra confronted him he said that he wanted to kill as many people as he'd saved as a firefighter.
  • He antagonized a younger boy, contemplating how his youth would be more delicious to Setsuo when he breaks, and would have killed him had Shinra not saved his life.
  • He threw an empty car at a couple, until Shinra kicked it out of the way.
  • After gaining more power through Hibana's experiments, Setsuo tested his new power on Arthur Boyle and mocked him for being weak, until Arthur was able to kill him.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He fails the Heinous Standards to several villains who worse crimes or have a bigger scope like Haumea, Inca Kasugatani, Rekka Hoshimiya and the Captain of the Holy Sol's Shadow. Setsuo only killed three people onscreen and his worst crime of killing four victims for his amusement that got him in court was offscreen.

Trivia[]

  • Setsuo Miyamoto, along with Rekka Hoshimiya, are the only Near Pure Evils in Fire Force.
  • Setsuo's appearance in the anime was toned down from his manga counterpart, as the woman and schoolboy he targeted were removed from the adaptation and the couple he threw the car at were absent as well making this act of his less dangerous, so Setsuo is more heinous in the manga than the anime.
