The expression on a girl's face her first time is incomparable... Their faces were palettes. Shock, confusion, panic, fear, and always just a soupçon of pain.
~ Ballentine reveling in inflicting pain on his victims.

Henry Palaver, better known as under his false identity of Sebastian Ballentine, is the main antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Pure". He is a serial rapist and con artist who rapes virginal teenage girls and tricks people into believing he is a psychic to swindle them out of their money.

He was portrayed by Martin Short, who also portrayed The Jester in Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return. His fake voice when calling the Sellars residence was done by Jackie Earle Haley.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He changed his name to Sebastian Ballentine after kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, and she only survived because he didn't kill her fast enough.
  • Manipulating a woman named Carlene Palaver through a prison pen pal system, he convinced her that he loved her.
  • After marrying Carlene, he decided not to have any sexual intercourse with her as she wasn’t a virgin.
  • Desperate for her husband's love and attention, he had Carlene help kidnap 12 young girls where Sebastian would tie up the girls, beat them, starve them, and sexually abuse them. Considering this quote, “Henry doesn't kill his victims? Not on this occasion,” implies that he kills them or has them killed by Carlene, which is backed up by the fact that none of his victims were named except the ones in the episode and the way Carlene talks about how they never new what was coming.
  • To stop his kidnappings of girls and to get a child, Carlene butchers a pregnant woman to death and steals the child to raise as her own.
  • The reason he preys on virgin girls is because he sadistically enjoys seeing their reaction since if it wasn’t a virgin, he believes they wouldn’t be as terrified.
  • He cons many people as a phony psychic, supposedly using this ability to taunt victims' families or rob them of their money.
  • He kidnaps 18-year-old Kaley Sellars and taunts her mother by saying she is being hurt on a phone call.
  • He enters the investigation by stating that he saw a vision of Kaley being kidnapped, taunting the mother by saying that he "senses" her presence while touching her underwear.
  • To cover for Sebastian while he is at the SVU precinct, Carlene strangles Kaley to death.
  • When Eliot Stabler and Olivia Benson start asking him questions about what he saw, he probes into their past life by asking questions.
  • He orders sister peg, a virgin nun, to be kidnapped, put into a cargo container, and tortured so he can rape and kill her later on.
  • In lockup, he strangles Carlene and calls her a “whore” and "slut" while she is being held back by Stabler.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He suffers from Fridge Horror and thus fails the heinous standard since he isn’t a confirmed serial killer, which stops him from passing the heinous standards to villains such as Mark Bruner and Adam Grafton, who have worse methods of torture and murder yet still target teenagers like Ballentine.
