Rumpelstiltskin is the main antagonist of DreamWorks' 20th full-length animated feature film Shrek Forever After, the fourth installment of the Shrek franchise.
He is a scheming and devious trickster whose plot to take over the kingdom of Far Far Away was accidentally ruined thanks to Shrek rescuing Princess Fiona from the Dragon's Keep. When the opportunity arises, Rumpel decides to trick a vulnerable Shrek into signing him a contract that ends up altering the entire reality.
He was voiced by Walt Dohrn.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He tried to make King Harold and Queen Lillian sign a contract to sign Far Far Away over to him so "all their problems will disappear," intending to get them erased from existence so he can rule over the kingdom, which would've worked had it not been for them learning about Shrek saving Fiona from the tower.
- While Shrek's rescue caused his business to go under, this is too petty of an excuse to justify his actions since Shrek never even knew of him, let alone intended this, and he obviously was always a slimey con artist beforehand.
- After seeing Shrek have an argument with Fiona, he tricked Shrek into signing a deal that will turn Shrek into an ogre for a day at the cost of losing a day of his life, with Rumpel secretly picking the day of Shrek's birth, causing the creation of an alternative reality where Shrek was never born, meaning that Harold and Lillian signed his deal and were erased from existence.
- With Harold and Lillian gone, he took over Far Far Away and turned it into a dystopia where Gingy was forced to fight sapient animal crackers and Rumpel captured a lot of ogres, forcing them to serve as slaves and be painfully whipped while doing hard labor, with Rumpel hunting for the rest so he could enslave them as well.
- When Shrek arrived in the alternate reality, Rumpel had him brought to his castle and gleefully told him that he took away the date of his birth and that he will cease to exist when the day ends, before mocking him about the fact that since he was never born, he never met Fiona and his three kids were never born.
- Since Shrek never met Donkey in this universe, Donkey never met Dragon, meaning their four kids were also never born.
- After Shrek escaped, he forced his witches to come up with an idea to find him lest he kill them by spilling a drink of water on them, and when one of them suggested hiring a professional bounty hunter, he killed her by spilling the water on her before deciding it was actually not a bad idea and going with it.
- He hired the Pied Piper to lure the ogres into a trap so he can force them to "fandango themselves into oblivion," with Shrek and Fiona being the only ones not captured thanks to Donkey and Puss.
- After learning Shrek and Fiona weren't captured and are together, he sent out a message where he said he would give the Deal of a Lifetime to anybody who gave him Shrek, leading an angry mob to find him and for several villagers to pass off other people as Shrek.
- When Shrek turned himself in to free all the captured ogres under the cost of him being imprisoned, he gleefully revealed he had Fiona captured since she isn't technically "all ogre" due to her curse, while having them put in opposite chains to torment them.
- He tried to feed Shrek and Fiona to Dragon, who is still evil in this reality, and ordered the witches to kill Donkey when he tried to stop her.
- When Shrek started to fade away, Rumpel mocked him about how "his day is up."
- While he is not as heinous as Big Jack Horner, he has less resources than him and stands out for his personal villainy against Shrek.
- While he has many comedic moments, such as when he goes on a small rant while talking to Shrek in the carriage, the scene where he puts on his angry wig, reciting Fiona's spell and saying "blardy-blardy-blar" at the end of it, and Walt Dohrn's hammy performance in general, they don't detract from his villainy as most of them are there to either hide or show how much of a vicious sadist he is, with his crimes being played surprisingly dark and him being the only villain to have ever caused Shrek enough emotional pain to the point of crying and kill him temporarily.
- Although his punishment of being locked up in a cage for the rest of his life is definitely a fate worse than death, it isn’t played for sympathy as he 100% deserves it for his actions.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He shows great care for his pet goose, Fifi, as he allowed his henchmen to pamper her while saying "daddy thinks you look real nice," screamed her name in anguish when she disappeared once his alternate reality began to fall apart after Shrek broke free of his deal, and was devastated when Fiona intentionally caused her to explode due to her singing.
Trivia[]
- He is the only Shrek character to be Near Pure Evil.
- There was a Rumpelstiltskin in Shrek the Third as part of Prince Charming's army of villains. Since he looks completely different and redeemed himself, it is more likely he's not the same one from the fourth film, and thus can't be Near Pure Evil himself.
- Rumpelstiltskin is the first Near Pure Evil who appears as the main antagonist of a fourth film helmed by Mike Mitchell from a DreamWorks Animation film series, the second being the Chameleon of Kung Fu Panda 4.
- He is the icon of the Plagiarism template.
