~ Rose the Hat.

Rose O'Hara, better known by her alias Rose the Hat, is the main antagonist of Stephen King's 2013 novel Doctor Sleep and Mike Flanagan's 2019 film adaptation of the same name.

She is the leader of the True Knot, a group of quasi-demonic, vampiric psychics who seek out children to torture to death, feeding off their psychic "steam" essence to gain power and live forever.

In the film, she was portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson.

Her Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • For centuries, Rose along with the True Knot has been abducting children and excruciatingly torturing them to death, in order to feed off the "steam" that their pain purifies to remain all but immortal. She has likely tortured hundreds if not thousands of children to death over the centuries and has no remorse at all.
  • Targeting the child Abra as a new source of steam, Rose discovered that Abra was by far the most psychically powerful child she'd ever come across, and she came up with the idea for the Knot to kidnap Abra and keep her alive for years to be excessively tortured over and over for her excessive steam.
  • It is also made clear that Rose hates the idea of there being someone out there who has more power than her, which was another one of her reasons to kill Abra for her steam, just to remain powerful.
  • Rose tried to have Abra kidnapped a few times, and one of the members of the True Knot even ended up killing her father.
  • In the film, after tracking Dan and Abra down to the Overlook Hotel, Rose fatally wounded Dan when he rejected her offer to become part of a new True Knot with her. And upon realizing that Dan was exceptionally powerful like Abra, Rose forewent the True Knot's usual restriction against consuming "polluted" adults' psychic Steam in order to gleefully feed on Dan's as she tortured him by pressing her thumb into his leg wound.

What Prevents Her from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • As horrible as she is, she expresses love for the other members of the True Knot; being in love with at least one-member, comforting Grampa Flick as he died of starvation and old age, and showing horror, grief and rage when each of the rest of the Knot are killed by Dan, Abra and their allies. However, despite this, the rest of the True Knot were as involved as Rose in serial child tortures and murders to maintain their quasi-immortality - furthermore, in the movie version, Rose didn't show any compunctions against offering for Dan (one of her loved ones' including her lover's primary killers, which she acknowledged minutes prior there) to become part of a new True Knot with her; making it more of a minor prevention.

Trivia[]

  • Rose the Hat is one of two villains in The Shining duology to be Near Pure Evil, alongside the Overlook Hotel.
