Prime: Imagine doing anything you want, then hopping to a timeline where you never did it. Imagine going anywhere, anytime, with nobody able to stop you!
C-137: Sounds lonely.
Prime: Lonely? Dude, you have yourself. Your infinite selves! It's a nonstop party where all the guests are the only person we like. You think it's cool being the smartest man on Earth, but once we give you this technology, you become the smartest thing in every conceivable universe. The Infinite Rick! A GOD!
C-137: Eh, pass.
Prime: Excuse me? Bro, Ricks don't pass on this! Who do you think you are?!
C-137: A different kind of Rick, I guess.
Prime: Well, we'll see how long that lasts.
~ Rick Prime's conversation with Rick C-137 before he kills his family.
Admit it. You would've been me! I just walked into your garage before you walked into mine! But eventually... you did! YOU LIVED IN MY HOUSE!
~ Rick Prime's last words to Rick C-137 and villainous breakdown as the latter beats him to death.

Rick Prime is the overarching antagonist of the Adult Swim science-fiction animated series Rick and Morty. He is a rogue variant of Rick who is the grandfather of Morty Smith, whom he abandoned before the start of the series and never looked back since. He was also the one that killed the family of the Rick from Dimension C-137, causing his fall from heroism and making him his arch-nemesis.

He was voiced by the show's co-creator Justin Roiland until Season 7, who also voiced Evil Morty in the same series, as well as the Earl of Lemongrab in Adventure Time. From Season 7 onwards, he is voiced by Ian Cardoni.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He abandoned his original family on the Prime Dimension when his daughter Beth was just a child, leaving it a dysfunctional wreck by the time it's joined by Rick C-137 several years later.
    • His negligence surrounding his previous homeworld would eventually lead to his grandson Morty causing a series of events that mutated Earth's entire population, forcing him and C-137 to escape to a new dimension as Beth, alongside Morty's sister Summer, eventually died while his father Jerry became a broken savage.
  • He had convinced many of his "milder" counterparts to become more like him by introducing them to multiversal travel. When they rejected him, he murdered their families for thinking they are better than him.
  • He entered Dimension C-137 to meet Rick C-137 and inform him about the existence of the multiverse, telling him to invent an interdimensional portal gun and become a godlike figure across universes. When Rick C-137 rejected his offer in favor of spending time with his wife Diane and his daughter Beth, Rick Prime killed both of them by blowing them up with a bomb, breaking Rick C-137 to his core.
    • This act would prove to have grave consequences for the entire multiverse as it would drive Rick C-137 to embark on a futile campaign to slaughter every version of himself who he believed was tied to Rick Prime, ultimately ending in him forming a treaty with them and creating the Citadel, which in turn would lead to the creation of the Central Finite Curve and the several atrocities that would be committed inside it, which itself would lead to the creation of Evil Morty and all of his actions (such as him killing numerous alternate versions of Rick and kidnapping and torturing their Mortys to hide from the Citadel), ironically including those who would eventually lead Rick C-137 to finally find Rick Prime after the Curve was destroyed, all while Rick C-137 was reduced to a nihilistic menace to the multiverse, making Rick Prime responsible for some of the show's events happening and as well as everything he would do in the process, even ironically succeeding in making Rick the person he'd be had he accepted Rick Prime's offer.
      • Furthermore, the fact that Rick Prime knows about what his alternate versions become when they achieve multiversal travel, alongside the fact that he has clearly been hiding from Rick C-137, heavily implies that he knows what he has turned him into and is practically living for it.
  • Just to torment all Ricks, he built an Omega Device to murder infinite versions of his wife, Diane.
  • When his base on the Prime Dimension is located by Rick C-137 and Morty Prime, he taunts Rick C-137 by sending a fleet of robot drones to attack them, hiding in plain sight as a naked "clone" and indignantly waving his behind at them, goading him into fighting him, and setting several self-destruct countdowns and saying that some of them might be real (although it's never shown if this is true since the next time we see the two, they've escaped the base).
  • When he meets Jerry Prime, he's quick to turn down his offer to team up against his enemies on the account that he finds teamwork to be "such a headache" and quickly shoots him dead when he attempts to kill him, indirectly orphaning Morty and leaving mankind on the Prime Dimension practically extinct aside from himself and his grandson.
    • While Rick Prime does call Jerry "badass" for slicing his throat, considering he shows off his healing factor to essentially make Jerry's attack on him look pitiful and promptly kills him afterwards, he might've said this just to mock him, especially considering how milquetoast Jerrys usually are.
  • He uses a decoy of himself to trap whatever Rick ends up killing it in an arena of his design where he forces them to kill each other (which Rick C-137, Morty Prime and Evil Morty end up getting trapped in) for the sole purpose of entertaining himself and devastating them.
    • He makes a false promise that he will return the beloved wife to whoever wins, only to have the winners face a robot version of Diane to taunt and try to murder the survivor.
  • In his base, he continually mocks Rick C-137 about his dead wife and has his robots try to kill him and his group.
  • He kidnaps and murders Slow Mobius by dropping him alive in the Omega Device (who experienced his death very slowly due to his abilities) just to torment Rick even further.
    • Since Slow Mobius was killed with Omega Device, he essentially erased every other version of him from the multiverse.
    • To make matters worse, Slow Mobius' wife was devastated by her husbands' death and did not know how to tell her children. She would then go on a revenge spree to hunt down her husband's killer just like Rick C-137 did, although unlike Rick she managed to move on and make peace.
  • He tries to shoot Evil Morty to death (believing it to be his grandson), asking how he wants his death to be.
  • He continues to taunt Rick C-137 as he was being beaten to death by saying he is no different and that he turned him into who he is to laugh at his emotional pain.
  • Even after Rick successfully kills him, he is so mentally broken he can't even find happiness, feeling emotionally empty even though he succeeded in his goal.
  • It's safe to say that he doesn't even show any decent care for his own family. Aside from the fact that he selfishly abandoned Beth as a child, he openly admits that he views Jerrys as a "concept" instead of actual human beings, not to mention that Rick C-137 tells Morty that Rick Prime isn't using him bait because he "truly does not give a shit" about him.
  • While he acts affable to both Rick C-137 and Jerry Prime upon meeting them for the first time, this is clearly nothing more than an act.
    • He drops all friendliness to Rick C-137 once he rejects his offer and resorts to taunting him during their reunion years later. As for Jerry, he subtly, yet openly disregards him in his face and proceeds to kill him even though he posed little threat to him anyway.
  • While he does have a few comedic moments, most of them revolve around him insulting and taunting his enemies, such as when he's pretending to be a naked clone and shaking his bare butt at Rick and Morty. In addition to these moments being too brief to be detracting, his atrocities against other Ricks and their families are treated seriously and is still regarded as a legitimate threat by Rick.
  • Despite the series high heinous standards, he easily stands out as the worst in the entire series, due to being responsible for all the actions and crimes that Rick C-137 would commit and by extension, Evil Morty would do too, as well as having the highest kill count of the series and having some personal villainy towards Rick C-137 for killing his family and turning him into the broken person he is today.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He had a visibly saddened expression when murdering his uncle Slow Mobius and said it hurts him to do it, with nothing indicating his care or remorse was disingenuous.

Trivia[]

  • While tormenting Rick C-137, he references Keyser Söze, another Near Pure Evil.
  • Since he's killed an infinite amount of people, Rick Prime technically has the highest kill count of any Near Pure Evil and possibly the highest kill count in all of fiction.
