His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Takes sadistic joy in what he does and never goes back on his word to kill at least one citizen before leaving the town of Dirt.
- Has been implied (and confirmed in the novel) to have killed all of the previous sheriffs under Mayor John's orders, with Jake’s viciousness enough to make clear he took extreme sadistic pleasure in killing them.
- Intimidates and mocks Rango with his formal introduction, making him flinch mid-sentence when he startled him with his massive fangs.
- He mocks Rango's care for Beans by licking her face with his large, venomous, forked tongue.
- He reveals Rango's true identity to the town, and threatens to "take his soul to Hell" in other words, kill him if he ever comes back.
- When told by Tortoise John to persuade Beans to sign in the paper, Rattlesnake Jake takes it too far, and wraps her around his body and threatens to squeeze her to death, openly stating he looks forward to making her eyeballs pop out of her head.
- Tortoise John tried to intervene, but Jake angrily scowls and bickers at him before he continues to squeeze Beans, further specifying his pleasure at the idea of killing her. While this does not prove John to be better by any means, it does infer that he does not share Jake’s visceral sadism.
- Even after discovering that the moles on bats were not actually a hawk, and even though they aren't a threat to him anymore, Jake sadistically laughs as he guns down many of the moles riding on bats.
- Dragged Tortoise John into the desert where it is heavily implied he killed and/or ate him as revenge for his betrayal and to carry on his legacy of taking one soul from town. Even though John absolutely deserved it for all the misery he afflicted on the city of Dirt, but Jake just did this purely out of pragmatism, because he was betrayed and it's unknown what happened to Jake afterwards and whether or not he decided to slither towards the path to redemption after punishing John, so this does not make him On & Off.
- While most of his crimes were under Tortoise John's orders, he still shows immense sadism in doing them to the point where even John himself scolded him for it. Some of his crimes like trying to brutally kill Bean and gunning down the moles where done independent of John's orders.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
Movie Version[]
- His movie version seems to suffer from some Fridge Horror, as it is never stated that he killed the previous sheriffs. However, his novel version was confirmed to have killed all the previous sheriffs. Morever, most of his crimes had been committed under Tortoise John's orders.
Both versions[]
- What ultimately prevents him from being Pure Evil is that Jake does have a sense of honor. He seems to despise liars and frauds, showcasing his hatred for Rango for pretending to be a sheriff and for falsely claiming that he was Jake's "brother". But after Rango proves himself to be a real sheriff (especially after saving his life), Jake gives him respect by addressing him as a fellow legend and willingly leaves the town, taking only Tortoise John with him.
Trivia[]
- He is currently the only Near Pure Evil voiced by Bill Nighy.
- He is also currently the only Near Pure Evil originating from Rango series.
