Rattlesnake Jake is the secondary antagonist of the Nickelodeon's 23rd animated feature film Rango.
He is a large and intimidating Diamondback Rattlesnake outlaw who made himself feared across the town of Dirt. Jake formerly served as Tortoise John's right-hand man and was one of the former arch-nemesis of Rango.
He was voiced by Bill Nighy.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- He takes sadistic joy in what he does and never goes back on his word to kill at least one citizen before leaving the town of Dirt.
- He has been implied (and confirmed in the novel) to have killed all of the previous sheriffs under Mayor John's orders, with Jakeās viciousness enough to make clear he took extreme sadistic pleasure in killing them.
- He intimidates and mocks Rango with his formal introduction, making him flinch mid-sentence when he startled him with his massive fangs.
- He mocks Rango's care for Beans by licking her face with his large, venomous, forked tongue.
- He reveals Rangoās true identity to the town and threatens to "take his soul to Hell" in other words, kill him if he ever comes back.
- When told by Tortoise John to persuade Beans to sign in the paper, Rattlesnake Jake takes it too far and wraps her around his body and threatens to squeeze her to death, openly stating he looks forward to making her eyeballs pop out of her head.
- When Tortoise John tried to intervene (albeit for pragmatic reasons), Jake angrily scowls and bickers at him before he continues to squeeze Beans, further specifying his pleasure at the idea of killing her.
- Even after discovering that the moles on bats were not actually a hawk, and even though they aren't a threat to him anymore, Jake sadistically laughs as he guns down many of the moles riding on bats.
- His hat tip to Rango is out of a sense of honor, not a redemption. It can also be implied that he went back to his bandit life after leaving the town from killing John.
- He drags Tortoise John into the desert where it is heavily implied, he killed and/or ate him as revenge for his betrayal and to carry on his legacy of taking one soul from town. Even though John is much worse than him, killing the sheriffs of the town, causing a drought on Dirt and leaving the people thirsty, Jake just did this because he was betrayed by him and it's unknown what happened to Jake afterwards and whether or not he decided to slither towards the path to redemption after punishing John, so this doesn't make him On & Off.
- While most of his crimes were under Tortoise John's orders, he still shows immense sadism in doing them to the point where even John himself (hypocritically) scolded him for it. Some of his crimes like trying to brutally kill Beans and gunning down the moles were done independent of John's orders.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He had a sense of honor as he seemed to despise liars and frauds, showcasing his hatred for Rango for pretending to be a sheriff and for falsely claiming that he was Jake's "brother". After Rango proved himself to be a real sheriff (especially after saving his life), Jake gave him respect by addressing him as a fellow legend and willingly left the town, only taking Tortoise John with him, presumably to kill him as revenge for betraying him.
