~ Rast taunting Sam and Gilly as they escape. |
Rast is a supporting antagonist in Game of Thrones, serving as a major antagonist in the Night's Watch storyline. He is a mutineer of the Night's Watch and the archenemy of Samwell Tarly.
He was portrayed by Luke McEvan.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- While many of the Night's Watch characters we meet throughout the show have sympathetic reasons for being on the wall, like Jon (wanting to prove himself), Sam (being forced by his cruel father under the threat of death) or Maester Aemon (going to the wall because he felt like his brother would make a better king), Rast got sent to the wall for being a rapist, immediately painting him as a hateable character.
- While Grenn and Piper were initially hostile to Jon and Grenn tried to punish him for breaking his nose in training, Rast grabbed Jon from behind to let them get revenge on him and possibly kill him.
- In training he cruelly bullies Sam, intending to "cut himself a piece of the piggy" when getting assigned to train with him (fortunately Jon and his friends prevent that by threatening him into submission).
- Taking part in the ranging beyond the Wall, he taunts and mocks Sam after a White Walker attack, causing him to collapse to the ground. He then tries to persuade the others to leave him behind to die, which is thankfully prevented by Jeor Mormont.
- He questions the Lord Commander's loyalty over his treatment of the Night's Watch.
- Murders his own Lord Commander Jeor Mormont by stabbing him in the back when he's distracted by Karl Tanner killing Craster and then finishing him off with several stabs in the throat, making him arguably the main instigator of the mutiny at Craster's Keep (While Karl began escalating the tension by killing Craster this was arguably self-defense since Craster charged at him with the clear intent to kill him).
- In the following months he happily joins the other mutineers at turning Craster's Keep into what's more or less a rape camp with himself as a willing participant.
- When Karl Tanner is informed of Craster's pact with the White Walkers, he decides for Rast to sacrifice Craster's last infant son which he does.
- He goes against specific orders from Karl to feed Ghost and taunts him by withholding his food, presumably out of petty spite against Jon.
- He sadistically humiliates and beats up Hodor in front of the other mutineers for nothing but the fun of it.
- When Jon and his team arrive to bring the mutineers to justice, he cowardly abandons the others and flees into the night (only to get his comeuppance by Ghost eating him).
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Fails the Heinous Standards to his fellow mutineer Karl Tanner, who has the additional crimes of intending to rape Meera in front of her brother as well as ordering Rast to sacrifice the infant.
- He shows subtle care for Bannen during his cremation, frustrated about Craster causing him to starve. However, he wasn't truly loyal to his allies, meaning it's possible it was just an excuse to start the rebellion, making it a minor prevention.
