You will be immortal. You will be infinite.
~ Raiden offering to make Kubo immortal.
Is that right? And how does this story end? (Kubo: I kill you.) Oh. Very well. Is this your wish? To do battle with a hideous monster who ruined your life? To prove your worth, like your doomed father? How mortal!
~ Raiden confronting Kubo.

Raiden the Moon King, also known as The Moon King or Raiden, is the main antagonist of Laika's 4th full-length animated feature film Kubo and the Two Strings.

He is the oppressive and totalitarian ruler of the night and the father of The Sisters and Kubo's mother. After defeating Hanzo, he seeks to kill Kubo's mother for betraying his family and to blind Kubo in order to make his grandson live with him.

He was voiced by Ralph Fiennes.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Upon realizing his daughter was in love with the swordsman Hanzo, he launched an attack on Hanzo's home, the Beetle Clan Castle, killing hundreds and cursing Hanzo into a beetle-like hybrid who lost his memories.
  • Sending two tidal waves to attack the swordsmen, which wiped out thousands and accidentally hits his daughter, causing her to be sick and eventually dying before reincarnating as the Monkey.
  • Mercilessly wiped out villages with people in it, in order to turn them immortal.
  • Sends his two daughters, Karasu and Washi, to blind Kubo to strip him of his humanity.
  • When Kubo refused to be a part of his family, Raiden transforms into the Moon Beast and fight Kubo, almost succeeded in killing him.
  • When attacking Kubo, he also attempted to erase the multiple families' spirits.
  • Raiden mentions that he wants to end all of humanity, even though its intended, and not attempted.
  • He does not have any remorse for his actions, not even for accidentally killing his daughter.
  • Although he did end up becoming a kind old man after his defeat, it was because Kubo's attack struck him with amnesia, making his redemption not out of his volition.
  • Despite being in a kids' movie, he has no comedic moments.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • His most heinous actions, including genocide, torture, and slavery, were entirely off-screen. Nonetheless, it has an impact on the story.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only Laika Near Pure Evil.
  • Raiden is by far the most heinous Laika villain to date, due to his body count ultimately leading up to millions.
