“ | Right you are, Princess. And as Queen of the Changelings, it is up to me to find food for my subjects. Equestria has more love than any place I've ever encountered. My fellow changelings will be able to devour so much of it that we will gain more power than we have ever dreamed of! | „ |
~ Queen Chrysalis explaining her true plot. |
“ | Starlight: What plan? Why did you do all this?! Chrysalis: So I could feed, of course! By replacing the most beloved figures in Equestria, my drones will be able to store all the love meant for them and return it here to me. She appears as the final antagonist of Season 2, a supporting antagonist in Season 5, the main antagonist of Season 6, a minor antagonist in Season 8, and one of the three main antagonists of Season 9 (alongside Tirek and Cozy Glow). She is one of Twilight Sparkle and Princess Cadence's archenemies and also an archenemy to Starlight Glimmer.
She was voiced by Kathleen Barr. She was also voiced by Britt McKillip in her Princess Cadance disguise, and Ashleigh Ball in her Applejack disguise.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- Overall, she seeks to rule over Equestria by having it's populace drained of their love. Her villain song indicates she was evil since she was a child.
- Her statement that Equestria has more love than anywhere else she encountered implies she's successfully conquered other kingdoms before.
- While she is a predatory creature and she devoured the ponies' love in order to survive and also to feed her subjects, it doesn't excuse her actions because:
- Her actions go far beyond what she had to do in order to survive, and her worst actions were done out of sadism and lust for power rather than predatory instincts.
- She manipulated all of her subjects into thinking she's doing what's best for them, but is really forcing them to live in starvation just to keep power over them.
- While she claimed during her reveal to Cadance during her previous invasion that she was doing it to find food for her subjects, indicating that she cares about them, her sheer sadism shows it's just an excuse for power, and she's not a well-intentioned extremist. This is made more apparent in Season 6 after Starlight finds out.
- Once the other Changelings realized they could obtain love by sharing it instead of draining it, she could have changed her ways as well. Instead she rejected Starlight's offer of redemption and chose to remain evil and swore revenge.
- While she does have comedic moments throughout, most of them don't detract from her villainy. Once the trio turns on Discord, she returns to being a more serious villain once again.
- Despite sharing some of her crimes with Tirek and Cozy Glow, she manages to do worse than both of them.
Season 2[]
- Captured Princess Cadance, then hid her in the caves below Canterlot.
- Disguised herself as Cadance in order to make Twilight think that Princess Cadance was evil.
- Brainwashed Shining Armor so she could lower Canterlot's shields. It's also implied that her brainwashing was physically hurting him.
- She also brainwashed Cadance's bridesmaids to ensure Twilight and Cadance wouldn't escape the caves.
- She is able to convince Twilight's friends and family that she's innocent and that Twilight is in the wrong, leading to them turning against Twilight.
- Trapped Twilight in the caves below when she was all alone.
- She then tricked Twilight into attacking, and possibly even killing, the real Cadance.
- Threatened to send Cadance back to the caves if she tried to stop her.
- Expressed sadism at her armies rampaging across Canterlot.
- Mocked and taunted Twilight's friends for not believing her correct suspicions on her due to always getting caught up on the wedding, proving she never took responsibility for her actions since she's the one who made them turn against her. This caused the rest of Twilight's friends to feel terrible for how they treated her and apologize for being mad at her for no real reason.
Season 5[]
- In the second altered timeline that was created by Starlight Glimmer, she and her Changelings have taken over most of Equestria without the Mane 6 to stop them.
- Much like King Sombra, it's implied her timeline have cause deaths, destruction and several damage across Equestria as seen there were a few ponies hiding from the changelings while becoming much more hostile towards strangers.
Season 6[]
- She became responsible for everything that has happened in "The Times They Are A Changeling" as Thorax became an outcast at the Crystal Empire for his Changeling heritage as all ponies including Twilight, Cadance, Shining Armor and even Flurry Heart are initially feared at him. However, Spike managed to defend him and succeed in standing up for him, leading the ponies to change their minds and welcoming Thorax in the Empire.
- She and her Changelings captured the Mane 6, Spike, Celestia, Luna, Cadance, Shining Armor, Discord, Trixie, and Flurry Heart and planned to feed on them all and take over Equestria. She only spared Starlight due to arrogantly believing she was not worth replacing with a changeling.
- Drains Thorax of his love for "betraying" her and nearly kills him (even though Thorax just wanted to show there's a better way to obtain love) just to stoke her delusional leadership and make an example out of the others, further showing that she doesn't actually care about her subjects.
Season 8[]
- Created evil counterparts of the Mane Six named the Mean Six so that she could take control of the Elements of Harmony, eliminate Twilight and her friends and destroy Starlight's relationships as revenge for turning the rest of the Changelings against her, ignoring that it was her own fault for lying to and dictating over them.
- Argues with and abuses the Mean Six as well.
- After discovering their betrayal, she attempts to destroy the Mean Six with her beam.
Season 9[]
- While she mentioned Discord was something until friendship changed him, she was mostly saying it to show Tirek and Cozy Glow what redemption does to someone just like her hive.
- Though she, Tirek and Cozy Glow came close to redemption upon retrieving the Bewitching Bell, Chrysalis quickly snapped them out of it.
- Goes along with "Grogar's" plan out of fear rather than true loyalty and seeks to usurp him after they find the Bewitching Bell and figure out how to use it.
- Betrayed and turned against "Grogar". Even though it was actually Discord in disguise, she doesn't know that until the trio used the Bewitching Bell on him, and they didn't do it out of any standards. Also being manipulated by him doesn't justify anything she or the other two do later.
- Along with Tirek and Cozy, blew up most of the Canterlot Castle, possibly injuring or killing anypony in close proximity.
- It's possible she brought up the subject of the Bewitching Bell to taunt Discord for posing as him.
- She was willing to let the Windigos turn Equestria into a frozen wasteland so that she, Tirek and Cozy could appear as heroes by stopping them later to make everypony do whatever they want out of gratitude. The other two are opposed to that idea.
- She cowardly threatens to pluck off Spike's wings if the Mane 6 don't surrender out of desperate fear of losing because the Mane 6 were winning the battle, even though he's a baby dragon and therefore, a mere child. Even though she gives him back to them, it's only because she, Tirek and Cozy got what they wanted, and they still try to kill him along with the ponies anyway.
- Attempted to finish off the Mane 6 with a magic beam but then many unicorns blocked them with a magic barrier.
- Unable to accept her and her allies' defeat for the last time, she furiously ranted at Twilight that friendship cannot save her and swearing revenge on her once again not before Pinkie drops a giant cupcake on her and her allies to shut them up.
- She even tried to spitefully attack while being turned to stone. Unlike the other two, her face is full of rage and malice.
What Prevents Her from Being Pure Evil?[]
- She relies on Fridge Horror during some of her worst acts, because of that she fails the baseline standard for PE.
- It was never implied that she and the others would intend for any beings in Equestria to succumb to the freezing caused by the Windigos before destroying them (the demographic of the show prevents the use of words like "die", but she never says anything like "whatever ponies are left" or "the survivors").
- When the rest of Equestria comes to aid in the final battle, while the villains do attack them, they never explicitly announce an intent to outright destroy them like they intended to do with the Mane 6 and Spike, specially compared to King Sombra who in his second revival outright mentioned he would do so with anyone who got in his way or defied him and has proven himself to have no problems at all doing so.
- While she was capable of conquering other lands it was because she had her hive and since they left her, it's never made clear how she would conquer other lands without them specially compared to King Sombra who was shown as competent and capable enough to conquer other lands without the need of an army while also being willing to start a war for vague reasons.
- While she can't be compared to Cosmos (who despite coming from a possibly different canon), The Tantabus or Midnight Sparkle since they are way more powerful, she still fails the Heinous Standards to King Sombra, and while he might've been more powerful than her at some point, once she and her comrades got access to the Bewitching Bell they managed to outrank him in power and had the capability to do worse than him.
- Despite being taken seriously for most of the time and while most of her comedic moments don't detract from her villainy she has some that do, such as her going mentally unstable after her hive left her and constantly talking to logs so she can't feel alone with even Mean Twilight pointing out she needed friends instead of servants but being too prideful to admit it, constantly vowing revenge on Starlight Glimmer, her performance in the song "Better Way to be Bad", playfully performing Twilight as a pathetic failure and her defeat where she got interrupted by a giant cupcake falling from the sky and squished her and her comrades. However since she was taken more seriously later on, this prevention is somewhat minor.
- She has been shown to get along with (and possibly befriend) both Tirek and Cozy without betraying them.
- While not played as too sympathetic, she showed some insecurities that prove she didn't like loneliness after her hive left her and that she was capable of friendship despite denying it.
- While she saved them from the Ophiotaurus for pragmatic reasons, she was still willing to give teamwork a shot.
- She saved Cozy when she was blown away by wind, though whether she did this out of genuine concern or pragmatism is uncertain.
- Despite distrusting him in first place, she allows Tirek absorb her magic so he can open an entrance for Cozy Glow to get the Bewitching Bell, she even admitted that she wasn't sure he'll give her magic back.
- Unlike King Sombra, they manage to trust each other and ended up enjoying teamwork.
- She's capable of sparing others lives.
- She, Tirek and Cozy simply left Rusty Bucket buried in snow rather than killing him, even though they had no real reason to let him live and risk being squealed on.
- She let Discord go after he was revealed to be "Grogar" even though he was powerless and it would've been more beneficial for them to get rid of him.
Trivia[]
- She is the only MLP Near Pure Evil to be a female in the series.
- She is also the only Near Pure Evil to not die, even if something similar happens to her.
