Protoboy is a major antagonist from Robotboy.
He was one of Professor Moshimo's first creations, who was kidnapped and reprogrammed evil by his rival Dr. Kamikazi, albeit too evil for Kamikazi to control, causing him to go on a rampage, leading to him being shut down. He was later reactivated by Robotboy years later, causing his murderous rampage to continue.
He was voiced by Lewis MacLeod, who also voiced Zaid in Horizon: Zero Dawn.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Even before Kamikazi reprogrammed his systems, he beat up Moshimo for no apparent reason, this is implied to have been because he lacked "humanity".
- While Kamikazi reprogrammed his systems and turned him evil, this was done so much so, that Kamikazi couldn't control him and he turned against him of his own will.
- He destroyed Kaziland and tied Kamikazi to a tree so he could watch helplessly. He also tried to shoot Constantine when he came to Kamikazi's rescue.
- In "Brother," the first thing he does when Robotboy reawakens him is to grab him and hold him over a ledge.
- He violently destroyed a playground when Robotboy tried to play hide and seek with him.
- He wrecked many buildings despite Robotboy pleading for him to stop.
- He attempted to smash a school bus full of children with a lamp pole before a horrified Robotboy stopped him.
- He casually tossed Tommy in the air without another thought.
- He endangered dozens of civilians when destroying and throwing cars just for fun.
- When Robotboy came to stop him, he kicked him into a toll booth.
- He tossed Moshimo's hover car away with him and Tommy inside and tried to stop Robotboy from saving them.
- Severely exhausted Robotboy by shooting at him while he was forced to hold Tommy and Moshimo, and then taunted him about being weak when he believed his microbug wouldn't do anything when he was about to finish him off.
- In "The Revenge of Protoboy," he first threw a giant asteroid at Robotboy, Tommy and Gus in an attempt to kill them.
- After revealing himself, he brutally beat up Robotboy, tore him in-half, and attempted to kill him, only being stopped by getting a phone call and having to leave.
- It is implied by Moshimo that he may want to destroy the world, as he says about him, "Protoboy sees the world as his enemy! His instinct is to attack."
- Presumably to lure Robotboy to him, he messed around with a cruise ship, terrifying nearly all the people on it bar Tommy's parents, who were oblivious to the situation. Tommy was horrified when he learned about this.
- He tossed the cruise ship at Robotboy, Tommy and Gus, when the former told him to put down the ship, causing him to toss up the other two before having to catch the ship and use it to save them.
- Though he did praise Robotboy's work at saving the ship and his friends, saying he wasn't bad and was fast, it was probably only to see how he'd be in battle.
- He ignored Robotboy's pleas for him to stop fighting as they are brothers, saying he'd be easy to destroy.
- Superactivated to try and destroy Robotboy.
- When Robotboy flew away to lead him away from the ship so he wouldn't harm any people, he provoked him to fight him by kidnapping Tommy and damaging the cruise ship in the process, causing it to slowly start sinking and endanger the people on it, including Tommy's parents and Gus. He took pleasure in showing off Tommy to Robotboy when he captured him, with the implication he may have been choked with how he held him with the back of his shirt's collar in the air, even telling Robotboy see what "bad thing" he was doing.
- He attempted to make Robotboy choose between saving Tommy, he who dropped to his near-death, either to drown or be eaten by sharks, or the sinking ship.
- He attempted to destroy Robotboy by colliding into him.
- After believing he had killed Robotboy, he attempted to destroy the ship, sadistically relishing the thought on how it was too bad he seemingly wasn't still around to see him do so, showing he would have gleefully enjoyed Robotboy's pain from killing everyone onboard, before he was ultimately killed by him. This is possibly the largest attempted kill count in the series (asides from Gus and Clammadon), as he would have killed presumably hundreds-to-thousands of innocent people (while we only see at least 15 people on the boat, including Tommy and his parents, there is likely far more).
- What's worse is that he had presumably only attacked the ship to lure Robotboy to him so he could destroy him, making him trying to destroy it after he thought he killed Robotboy an act out solely of spite and sadism.
- This act was also presumably the final straw for Robotboy, who stopped trying to redeem him entirely.
- In "The Old Switcharobot," he temporarily killed Robotboy, stole his body, threw his motherboard in the trash and pretended to be him, laying waste to a mall in the process.
- He kicked Gus out of a window for insulting him.
- He wrecked Tommy's room for losing a game to him.
- He was going to presumably kill Tommy with a mace if he found out he wasn't Robotboy.
- He persisted that Tommy take him to Moshimo, until he finally relented, so he secretly could go and kill Moshimo.
- He lifted Moshimo by the shirt and threatened to get his revenge on him.
- He might have tried to kill Moshimo's mutated yaks if Robotboy didn't interfere.
- He had removed the components that make his arm cannons work after swapping bodies with Robotboy, so that he couldn't fight back.
- Tried to kill Robotboy using his own body, chasing him down the Mexican canyons before firing a massive bomb at him, causing him to be heavily damaged.
- He came close to killing Robotboy, Tommy and Moshimo with various blasters that could have literally blown them to bits.
- Despite him telling him to stand down, he almost killed Brainy Yak by shooting at his ship, causing it to violently crash and burn.
- Him being vaporised by Brainy Yak forced Moshimo to replace Robotboy's destroyed body with a new one.
- In his final appearance in "The Return of Robotgirl," he ambushed Moshimo, kidnapped him and, knowing Robotboy and his friends would come to his rescue, used him to lure Robotboy and Robotgirl to him so he could kill them all. He even states Moshimo is right about it being a trap.
- It is implied he beat up Robotgirl and caused her memory loss off-screen. This is implied by how the first thing the amnesic Robotgirl says to Robotboy, Tommy and Gus is "No hurt Moshimo!" and how Tommy notes she's "pretty banged up," though this could have been from her pod crashing.
- Planned on killing his creator and fellow robots in a brutal way by trapping them in molten titanium molds that would fill up before freezing solid.
- Blackmailed and tried to manipulate Robotboy and Robotgirl into entering the titanium molds under the pretence he would free Moshimo, so he could kill them both and Moshimo.
- He facepalmed at Robotboy (who knew he was lying) when he prevented Robotgirl from entering a mold, calling him a "dummy" as he captured him instead.
- When Robotgirl fought him, he activated the titanium machine to kill Robotboy and Moshimo.
- He fought Robotgirl and deactivated her, with her still-conscious, before trying to kill her.
- When the kids tried to trick him with a shadow illusion, it's implied he knew it was a trick and superactivated either to lure them into a false sense of security or for his amusement.
- Attempted to kill Tommy and Gus for trying to trick him. Even when Robotboy stopped him, he defiantly still tried to shoot him and Moshimo.
- Him activating the titanium molds indirectly caused the factory to explode, almost killing everyone including himself.
- Despite the comedic tone of the series and the majority of villains being played for laughs to some degree, he is always taken fairly seriously and darkens the tone to a noticeable degree when he appears, his several few comedic moments don't detract from his villainy or are subverted; he is taken dead seriously in his final appearance and the only joke he has was to show him being unable to grasp how Robotboy protected their sister and does not detract from his villainy, so its reasonable to say he subverted them entirely.
- Even if there are several comedic moments in scenes with him, he still for the majority of the time is taken very seriously as a threat and darkens the tone noticeably.
- He is one of the few villains who's crimes leave permanent impact as he made Robotboy ultimately despise him after attempting to redeem him and indirectly forced him to inhabit an entirely new body. Notably, Robotboy seems to hold genuine disgust for him unlike any other villain because of his cruelty towards him, and has an open intention (and once successful) to intentionally destroy him, something he, although attempted rarely, has never truly attempted to do to any other major villain, even Dr. Kamikazi.
- Despite having lower resources than villains like Bjorn Bjornson, Special Agent and General Yakitori, he manages to be far more heinous compared to them, as his crimes affect more people than theirs.
- While Gus and Clammadon did worse crimes with a higher attempted body count, they have detracting factors in-regards to their villainy (Gus' most heinous crimes are mostly unintentional or out of his stupidity, while Clammadon has no little to no personality) and have arguably higher resources, while Protoboy does his crimes intentionally and has the added bonus of his crimes being more brutal in-nature and personal for Robotboy, Moshimo and Robotgirl.
- And while Truckenstein also has a high attempted body count via attempted vehicular manslaughter, Protoboy stands out with his crimes being more cruel and personal, and has less resources than Truckenstein since he's an arguably satanic force due to having the title "The Ultimate Automotive Evil", meanwhile Protoboy is just a robot with Robotboy's and Robotgirl's powers, and commits more personal crimes as mentioned earlier.
- He has come arguably the closest of any villain to successfully kill Robotboy.
- Despite his deaths being brutal, he is seen as deserving them in-universe due to his crimes.
- While in "The Revenge of Protoboy," a one-off joke shows he has a girlfriend, as shown when he gets a phone call from her, his love for her being genuine isn't confirmed as he has a sense of annoyance when she calls him and he never mentions her again.
- While it is implied he may want to please Moshimo, with it being explicitly stated that he wants revenge on him for liking Robotboy better than him, saying he would spare Moshimo, if Robotboy and Robotgirl sacrifice themselves for the reason he would be the only robot of his left, and Lola using the façade of another Moshimo robot that he likes better existing to distract him, its not played for sympathy, isn't confirmed, possibly subverted when he tried to kill him by pouring molten titanium on him and his heinous crimes outweigh it.
- He also has other traits that may come off as sympathetic, but they aren't portrayed as such.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He seemingly has moral agency issues, as he was reprogrammed by Kamikazi into being evil, although too much for him to control. Despite this, Protoboy is shown to be able to know right from wrong, has an intelligent personality, knows how to pretend to be good, enjoys what he does and pretty much knows he is a villain.
Trivia[]
- He is the only Robotboy villain to be Near Pure Evil.
