See, Ellie? We are a team. You just decided to let that man live. See, the question isn't why do I kill people. The question is why I don't kill everybody. I decide who dies, but mostly, I decide who lives. I'm like... God. And now you are too.
~ Billy Flynn to Ellie Spicer.

Billy Flynn, also known as the Prince of Darkness, is a major antagonist in Criminal Minds, serving as the main antagonist of both the Season 5 finale "Our Darkest Hour" and the Season 6 opener "The Longest Night". He is a prolific serial killer and rapist who targets his victims (namely families) during blackouts across the United States. Over the course of the episodes, he returns to California after learning that one of his past survivors, Matt Spicer had become a detective.

As an adult, he was portrayed by Tim Curry, who also voiced Nero in The Story Keepers. As a child, he was played by Stone Eisenmann.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • In 1968, when he was 13, he shot and killed his mother Nora and one of her clients (ironically named John), even making the latter beg for his life before shooting him. Though arrested and jailed for the murders, he was released at 18 due to being a juvenile.
  • In 1984 at 29, around the same time as Richard Ramirez's own killing spree, Billy began committing burglaries in California, which soon evolved into torture by repeated pistol whipping, raping and then murdering the occupants, often leaving a survivor.
    • One such occurrence led to him murdering the parents of Matt and Kristin Spicer, the former eventually becoming a detective for the Los Angeles Police Department.
  • Following several more attacks and after acquiring an RV, he began taking his crime spree across the country for 26 years.
    • The total number of families he attacked over those 26 years would later be counted at over 200.
  • Returning to California in 2010, he rapes and murders two women, intentionally leaving no witnesses in order to attract Detective Spicer's attention.
  • Breaks into the home of Gregory and Colleen Everson, murdering the former and raping the latter while leaving her alive and traumatized.
  • Across the span of May 26th, in order to get Spicer's attention, his following crimes include:
    • Rapes and murders Annie Danzi, while also forcing her son to watch from the closet and leaving a message ("HELLO THER") for the detectives and BAU to find (reminiscent of forcing a young Matt Spicer into the closet and forcing him to watch the rape and murder of his mother).
    • Kills an unnamed couple in their home, but leaves their baby alive (reminiscent of him leaving a baby Kristin Spicer alive).
  • Murders the current occupant of the Spicer's old home, before abducting Kristin and Ellie (Matt's daughter), with him also raping the former.
    • The wounds Kristin suffered later cause her to pass away in the hospital.
  • Assaults and has BAU Agent Derek Morgan restrained, ordering Ellie to tie him up with duct tape.
  • Shot Matt at close-range, fatally wounding the detective, before abducting Ellie, intending to mold her into his accomplice.
  • Shortly after, he uses Ellie as bait in order to break into the home of Larry and Annette Simmons, before murdering the couple.
  • Though he intended to spare a passing motorist after letting Ellie decide the man's fate, he still decided to kill him to prevent any witnesses after the man overheard a radio announcement about Billy's RV.
  • Fatally shot Paul Farraday and has Ellie tie up his son while he attempts to rape Paul's wife. This fails due to Ellie helping the second son escape to alert the neighbors, forcing Billy and Ellie to steal the Farraday's car and flee.
  • After letting Ellie go, he holds a couple hostage while he awaits Morgan's arrival. After talking with Morgan, he aims his gun at the wife, forcing Morgan to gun him down, ending his spree of evil.
  • Although he often leaves a survivor of his crimes, this isn't redeeming in any way, as said survivors are almost always traumatized by the sheer horrific crimes that Billy afflicted on them and others, as well as being a means to ensure that Billy isn't forgotten.
  • Despite the astronomically high heinous standards for Criminal Minds, Billy easily surpasses those due to him being one of the few UnSubs in the series to have a kill count in the triple-digits, with at least 216+ confirmed kills to his name.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has a tragic past due to his mother abusing him and also pimping him out to pedophilic clients. This, coupled with him eventually shooting both her and her "John" dead ultimately served to mold him into the sadistic killer and rapist that he is in the present.
  • He is shown to never hurt any children, as revealed when he spared Matt and Kristin when they were young.
    • Additionally, he seemed to genuinely care (albeit in a twisted way) for Ellie as a sort of grandfather figure, with Billy eventually releasing her after J.J. pleads to him over the radio. However, given that he murdered Ellie's father and raped her aunt, this is somewhat of a minor prevention.
  • During his final moments, he shows remorse over killing his mother, wondering if he had freed her by killing her and asks Morgan if he believes in heaven where he could meet his mother again and perhaps get a second chance before committing a suicide by cop.
