~ Killmonger to T'Challa. |
First Lieutenant Erik Stevens (born N'Jadaka), also known as Erik Killmonger, is a major antagonist of the first season of What If...?, serving as the titular main protagonist of "What If... Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?" and one of the two final antagonists (along with Arnim Zola) of "What If... The Watcher Broke His Oath?".
He is a Wakandan-American assassin and mercenary whose father was killed by T'Chaka for betraying Wakanda and helping Klaue steal Vibranium from Wakanda. Unlike his main timeline counterpart, this version of Killmonger saved Tony in Afghanistan and made a friendship with him, using Tony's knowledge and resources to build his own army of drones to promote his own agenda.
Like his main timeline iteration, he was voiced by Michael B. Jordan.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Although he was driven into becoming evil through T'Chaka killing N'Jobu and having to live in poverty for a while, unlike the original counterpart whose tragedy still holds up, this no longer holds up as a valid Freudian Excuse since his killing Tony Stark and James Rhode and manipulation both sides of the United States vs. Wakanda war have absolutely nothing to do with losing his father in the first place. This is further proven when T'Challa shows no sympathy for him in the Ancestral Plane in contrast to the T'Challa in the original timeline.
- Like his main timeline counterpart, he killed hundreds of people during his time working as a black ops mercenary in the NAVY Seals and puts a scar on his body for each kill he made.
- Though he did rescue Tony Stark from Afghanistan and exposed Obadiah's assassination plot, this was only done to promote his own image and to make Tony trust him.
- When T'Challa arrives to arrest Klaue, Erik kills him with an upgraded sonic taser before setting his sights on Rhodes. When Rhodes tries to reason and convince him to address racism through changing the system from the inside, Erik instead says it's better to burn the system to the ground before killing Rhodes with the claw glove from T'Challa's Panther Habit.
- After Tony discovers Erik's betrayal, he stabs Tony with his Vibranium Spear. When Tony tries to reason with him and note their similarities, Erik pushes the spear deeper into Tony's body and says that he's different from Tony.
- He frames the deaths of Rhodes and Tony on the Wakandans while framing the death of T'Challa on the Americans in order to create conflict between the two nations.
- After finding Wakanda's barrier, he betrays Klaue and kills him in order to gain the Wakandan's trust.
- He creates his army of drones, which he has attack Wakanda in order to convince T'Chaka of his allegiance, which gets presumably hundreds of Wakandan soldiers killed.
- When he meets his cousin in the Ancestral Plane, he expresses no remorse to T'Challa over his death nor does he apologize for killing him, merely telling his cousin he did what he had to do.
- After Infinity Ultron is defeated, he takes the Infinity Stones for himself, and when the Guardians of the Multiverse refuse to cooperate with him, Erik attempts to kill all of them.
- While it is argued that his imprisonment inside Strange Supreme's time bubble, which will have him battle Zola for the Infinity Stones frozen in time for all eternity, makes him a scapegoat, it is untrue since he deserves it after everything he did, not to mention he later manages to escape.
- He escapes from his imprisonment thanks to Captain Carter freeing all of Strange Supreme's multiversal prisoners while she and Kahhori try to stop him from using the Forge to resurrect his dead universe, using his Infinity Stones to fight anyone who comes after him.
- He kills the 1602 reality's Thanos by erasing him from existence as he attacked Carter and Kahhori just for being in his way, trying to then attack the two heroines.
- He dons on his Black Panther habit and engages everyone else in fighting for their own survivals, likely intending to kill some given how he pulls out his suit's claws. After this, he is never seen again and will most likely continue to kill people on his own unless the 1602 Avengers band together to stop him, making him a Karma Houdini.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He genuinely loves his father and wanted to avenge his death, openly stating this to his cousin in the Ancestral Plane and repeatedly telling Tony he wanted to make his father’s efforts worth something.
- Before he stabs Tony, Erik shows remorse in having to kill Tony, tells him he was wishing he didn't have to make the cut and appears to have a genuinely sorrowful face before finishing him off, indicating that he liked Tony.
