ā€œ Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves! ā€ž
~ Poseidon's motto, and his most famous quote
ā€œ ♫ I've got a reputation, I've got a name to uphold. So I can't go letting you walk or else the world forgets I'm cold. ♫ ā€ž
~ Poseidon expressing his true motive in "Get in the Water".

Poseidon is the main antagonist of the 2022-2024 musical series, EPIC: The Musical, by Jorge Rivera-Herrans that serves as an adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. The God of Tides and brother of Zeus, father of Polyphemus, and an Olympian god who takes pride in being cold and ruthless. When King Odysseus of Ithaca decides to spare Polyphemus and simply left him wounded, Poseidon becomes the biggest threat he faces on his journey back to Ithaca as he strives to take revenge, outraged at the disrespect given to him, serving as his arch-nemesis.

He is voiced by Steven Rodriguez.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close To Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Even within the cruel world of Ancient Greece and how vicious and cruel the Olympian Gods could be, Poseidon stands out as the most depraved due to how he fully submits to the motto of "ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves" and how he would dish out any remotely cruel act just for his own convenience, no matter how necessary it is. Unlike other Gods or even other characters who are capable of restraint or reflection and even selflessly help other people and mortals, Poseidon is the opposite.
  • Sends in a storm that threatens to sink Odysseus' fleet with nearly 600 men.
  • As the ultimate mockery of his idealistic views, Poseidon leaves Odysseus alive as he drowns nearly all of his fleet, killing over 500 defenseless soldiers, leaving only 43 of his men left on the ship he was in before attempting to kill them all.
  • He lets Odysseus travel back to Ithaca when his storm was sealed by Hermes, and for his worst, most cruel action yet, he forced Odysseus to either get in the water and drown for slighting Poseidon, or he will summon a tsunami that shall wipe out all of Ithaca, making special mention to taking the lives of Odysseus' wife and son he was desperate to reunite with and even gouge the latter's eyes before his death, all so the world will never forget he was cold.
  • When Odysseus begs Poseidon for forgiveness, knowing neither side is satisfied for their feud to continue as they suffered losses they are still recovering from, Poseidon is so offended by the thought of offering forgiveness, he then unleashes his ultimate move to drown Odysseus in the depths of the ocean, serving as the final straw that turns Odysseus into a monster even Poseidon is horrified by, though only out of self-preservation.
  • Ultimately, while EPIC does show some validity in needing to be ruthless to survive ancient Greece, Poseidon is only portrayed as a hypocrite who only preaches about the necessity of ruthlessness and how absurd giving mercy is whenever it is only he who has the upper hand. When Odysseus takes Poseidon's ideals to heart and uses it against him and torture him, Poseidon goes as far as to plead for mercy and only relents in letting Odysseus to go back home when he was going to throw his infamous motto back at him due to an unwillingness to face how his philosophy backfired upon him, showing how Poseidon's ideology was something he abused for self-serving ends.

What Prevents Him From Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He had some care for his son Polyphemus, as before slaughtering Odysseus's crew, he demanded him to apologize for blinding his son, and in "Get In The Water", he hesitates to attack Odysseus when the latter offers to end their feud when he brings up their losses and admits that he can't move on, showing that he did not want his son's suffering to go unavenged.
    • Him saying he's mad that his son wasn't killed does not subvert this, as he was solely saying it to mock the foolishness in Odysseus's decision, which he again does when Odysseus releases his storm and blocks his path to Ithaca.

Trivia[]

  • He, Polyphemus, and Zeus are the only Near Pure Evils in EPIC: The Musical.
  • While he is currently Near Pure Evil, there's a chance this could change in the upcoming musical, Ilium.
