| ~ Player 096 to Seong Gi-hun after pushing Player 312 to his death in Jump Rope. |
Player 096 is a supporting antagonist in Netflix's K-drama Squid Game. He is a player in the 37th Squid Game who got into debt through unknown means, leading to him joining the game in the first place.
He is also a member of Team O and, before joining the games, he was in the Republic of Korea Marine Corp and was in Cohort 946. Like most of Team O, he is a greedy and ruthless player who aims to survive the games and pay off his debt by any means possible.
He was portrayed by Lee Suk.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- While it's unknown how he got himself into the game, the narrative doesn't paint him as tragic.
- Despite being a member of the marines, nothing implies he has honorable motives in protecting his nation.
- Although in the second round, he seemed to be a calm and friendly person when he was almost recruited by Dae-Ho (before being rejected so that they would include Jun-Hee on his team), he later showed himself to be antagonistic and cruel to Gi-Hun and his team, as well as downright psychopathic with others.
- Despite his low screen time, he is shown to be sadistic and greedy enough to kill all the remaining players just to win, without feeling any remorse, preventing him from being insufficiently characterized.
- His lack of redeeming qualities also make him arguably more evil than even the game's directors, Oh Il-nam, the Front Man and the Masked Officer.
- While the series has very high heinous standards, 096 manages to mostly stand out due to his lower resources and unique crime of attempting to kill all of the remaining players in the Jump Rope game, which resulted in 11 deaths and is an attempted kill count of 13, only being surpassed by Jang Deok-su, his low screentime also helps since most villains who are worse than him appear more often and thus are given more opportunities to did worse.
Season 3[]
- He was the first player to find out Jun-hee was pregnant yet still vote O.
- He participated in the Special Game which killed a total of 26 players, with him killing Player 113 as he's seen standing over her body when the guards come in.
- He was one of the many Team O players who mockingly applauded Gi-hun for his failed rebellion.
- As the rules for Hide and Seek are being explained, he shows no shock or hesitation when being told his team must kill a blue player to live, instead being frustrated at first when he thinks he won't get a weapon to kill them.
- He stabbed Player 105 during Hide and Seek to progress. While this was necessary for him to survive, he felt no remorse for it.
- During Jump Rope, he intended to kill all remaining 22 Players once he crosses.
- The moment he crosses the bridge in Jump Rope, he pretends to be cheering on Player 312, then pushes him off as soon as he reaches the finish line. He then pushes off Player 276 who tries to lunge at him.
- His intent from the start was to push off every player or at least block the way until time ran out and due to 22 players still not crossing, he attempted to murder 22 people all out of greed, rather than his own survival.
- Among these people, would include Kim Jun-hee, who he fully knew was the mother of the baby.
- In addition to the two he killed, him blocking the way caused a total of nine players to fall off the bridge to their deaths, mostly due to exhaustion from jumping.
- He takes sadism in these actions as he repeatedly laughs at and taunts the dying players.
- He lunged at Gi-hun, attempting to kill him when he stopped him from killing all of the other players.
- Despite planning to split the prize money with Gi-hun, he holds no respect or care for him at all. Most likely it was pragmatism so that Gi-hun did not intervene in his plan to kill the other players and he probably planned to kill him afterwards and not keep his word, since he had no problem trying to kill him afterwards.
- While he did cheer for Gi-hun when he passed the bridge, he subverted this by trying to kill him afterward.
- His death of being sent flying off the bridge after he got his eye gouged by Gi-hun is played for nothing but satisfaction.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- As heinous as he is, he still fails the heinous standard to Jang Deok-su whose kill count is 4 times higher than 096, as he started the massacre in Season 1 all by himself and planned on doing it twice, compared to the one in Season 2 where all members of Team O planned it together, not to mention Deok-su did something similar to 096 in Glass Bridge where he holds up the line endangering all the other players and refuses to go unless someone else did. Not even resources can help since all players share the same resources.
Trivia[]
- He and Nam-gyu are the only two players from Squid Game to be Near Pure Evil.
- Interestingly, he is a nameless player and yet, he is more heinous than more plot-relevant players like Cho Sang-woo, Im Jeong-dae or Thanos. Additionally, both players who are here were approved due to failing heinous standards despite having no redeeming qualities, while both of the game staff on this Wiki were approved due to having redeeming qualities despite passing the heinous standards.
- Both him and Nam-gyu are Seekers during Hide-and-Seek and died in the Jump Rope game. The only differences is that Player 096 made it through Jump Rope before he was killed by Gi-hun whilst Nam-gyu didn't as he was pushed off of the platform to his death by the rope.
