His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • In his early childhood, Phelan once shot a rabbit and sadistically watched it suffer to death rather than put it out of its misery.
  • He raped a woman named Annabel Rubinstein, who would give birth to Nicola as a result, making her a product of rape.
  • Even before his arrival on Coronation Street, Phelan already had a notorious reputation for his sadism and cruelty, as well as his illicit activities.
  • He often cheated on his first wife, Valerie, through a string of extramarital affairs.
  • He conducted a revenge scheme on Owen Armstrong and Gary Windass in retribution for being forced to repay them a £4,000 debt; this involved forging a business partnership with Owen, during which he sexually harassed Owen's girlfriend and Gary's mother Anna Windass before attempting to force himself on her in order to stage a confrontation with Gary himself. He successfully goaded Gary into attacking him with a paperweight on CCTV footage after calling Anna a "tease" and a "tart". Phelan then used the footage that captured the incident to blackmail Owen and Gary into working for him for free, otherwise Phelan would take the footage to the police and have Gary sent down for GBH/attempted murder.
    • He took delight in exhausting both Owen and Gary with his blackmail, up to the point where he later told Owen that he'll be keeping the £80,000 that Owen invested onto their business project instead of giving it back to him, which turned out to be what Phelan's revenge scheme was about all along due to Owen having forced Phelan to repay his £4,000 debt back in 2013. Because he succeeded with his revenge, Phelan would be responsible for the Armstrong/Windass clan suffering monetary problems and Owen subsequently being declared bankrupt.
    • He later twisted the knife on Owen even further by arranging for the latter to be removed from the council's list of approved builders, which meant Owen could no longer get any more independent work and that Phelan can continue to blackmail him without letting Owen find a way of escaping it.
  • He raped Anna by blackmailing her into sleeping with him after she pleaded for him to end his blackmail of Owen and Gary. Because of this, Phelan ended up being the reason why Anna's romantic chemistry with Owen would then be destroyed beyond repair, because when Owen found out about what happened to Anna, he didn't fully forgive her for being forced to cheat on him with Phelan; henceforth, this is one of the reasons why their relationship fell apart and Owen would later depart Weatherfield for good.
  • Following his return in 2016, Phelan continued to terrorize Anna and Gary to the point of showing sadistic delight in humiliating and discrediting them; he went as far as to taunt Anna over raping her back in 2014.
  • He forged a close friendship with Jason Grimshaw before practically usurping his position as the landlord of Weatherfield after the death of Jason's father Tony Stewart; this involved sabotaging Jason's business routines and making Jason himself believe that his old enemy Callum Logan was behind it. Phelan's actions here make him responsible for Jason deciding to leave Weatherfield.
  • He projected a fraudlent scheme called "Calcutta Street" with his partner-in-crime Vinny Ashford, which had them set up a development of non-existent flats to defraud several investors from tens of thousands of pounds; among those conned are Gary's girlfriend Sarah Platt, longtime resident Rita Turner, and fellow neighbour Yasmeen Nazir, as well as some unidentified others. Beforehand, Phelan convinced Jason off-screen to use the £65,000 he received from his late father's will to finance the unsuspecting scam project. By the time Vinny did a runner with all the profits and left Phelan to face the music, Phelan is the reason why the aforementioned investors were left nearly penniless and that Jason lost his £65,000 for good.
  • He caused the death of Michael Rodwell in November 2016 after Michael had rumbled the truth about Phelan's scam. That night when they had their final confrontation and Michael made it clear that he knew the truth about the scam, Phelan made it clear that he was going to kill him to protect his own involvement, thus a cat-and-mouse chase ensued between them that ended in tragedy when Michael's stress from Phelan's wrath led to Michael suffering a heart attack in front of Phelan. It was then Phelan watched Michael sccumb to his heart attack in pain rather than help him.
    • The night he killed Michael was also the second time he watched Michael suffer a heart attack and chose not to help him; the first time Phelan witnessed Michael having a heart attack, he didn't care and mockingly refused to help him until an unsuspecting Jason came in and called an ambulance without realizing Phelan's true colors at all. During that time, Phelan destroyed Michael's relationship with Jason's mother Eileen before proceeding to forge a relationship with her on his own.
  • He blackmailed Andy Carver in retaliation after Andy tried to kill Phelan to avenge Michael's death, since beforehand, Michael and Andy had a surrogate father-son relationship. Phelan's blackmail of Andy appeared to have ended with Phelan forcing Andy to sabotage the business empire of Kevin Webster before setting his garage on fire, as Phelan wanted to get revenge on Kevin for disrespecting him. Phelan's actions here caused complications in Andy's relationship with his girlfriend Steph Britton, whereas Kevin would suffer dire financial straits because of what Phelan forced Andy to do.
  • He kidnapped Andy and locked him in a cellar for 9 months after Andy made a last-ditch attempt to bring Phelan to justice for both Michael's death and the flats scam project. The way how he treated Andy throughout the latter's ordeal was brutally traumatic, as Andy had been unlawfully imprisoned in a cellar with horrendous conditions, and on most occasions, Phelan seemed to relish in tormenting his prisoner.
  • He killed Vinny by forcing Andy to shoot him dead.
    • In the build-up to Vinny's murder, Phelan had successfully tracked him down through Vinny's old mother Flora McArdle and used her to blackmail Vinny with a threatening ultimatum: either Vinny come back to Weatherfield and give Phelan the money they used to swindle the people who lost all their life savings in the flats scam project, or Phelan will kill Flora. Then after Vinny did what he was forced to do, Phelan kidnapped Vinny and planned to have Andy murder him, which worked successfully after Phelan manipulated Andy into believing that Vinny killed Michael, which in turn drove Andy to shoot Vinny dead with a gun.
  • He killed Andy with the same gun the latter had been forced to use to murder Vinny just moments ago.
  • He successfully arranged for Anna to be wrongfully imprisoned for pushing her daughter's boyfriend Seb Franklin off a ladder in revenge for Anna telling Phelan's daughter, Nicola, the truth about what he did to her back in 2014. This in turn caused Nicola to discover that Phelan had raped her mother in the past, which resulted in Nicola disowning her father because of what she found out about her mother and from Anna. Henceforth, Phelan blamed Anna for ruining his relationship with Nicola and the result of his actions in getting Anna sent to prison for a crime she didn't commit was purely out of spite.
  • He killed Luke Britton for practically uncovering the true circumstances about Andy's fate.
    • This happened when Luke confronted Phelan after realizing that Phelan had been lying to him about the circumstances behind Andy's supposed disappearance all along. When an argument between them led to Luke deciding to report Andy's disappearance to the police so they can help him prove his theory rather than believe Phelan's lies, Phelan decided to murder Luke in order to silence him. He succeeded in doing so after hunting Luke down in a subsequent car chase, which ended with Phelan causing Luke to crash his car before shooting Luke as he tried to escape from the vehicle. Phelan then shot the petrol tank in Luke's car with Luke himself still inside the vehicle, killing him in the resultant explosion.
  • He nearly got Eileen wrongfully sent to prison on suspicion of abetting in all his crimes.
    • This was because on the day after she finally learned the truth about him, Eileen was arrested when the police suspected she had been abetting in Phelan's crimes. As such, Phelan's actions here caused Eileen to lose her credibility in Weatherfield for a temporary stint.
  • He pointed the gun at his own daughter, Nicola, and demanded for her to let him pass over to see her infant daughter Zack, also his newly-born grandson. This resulted in a scuffle between them that ended with Phelan shooting Nicola by mistake.
  • He perpetuated a gun-threatening siege in the Bistro restaurant where owners Robert Preston and Michelle Connor were due to get married. In the midst of the siege, Phelan took Michelle hostage and threatened to kill her and Robert when the latter attempted to prevent this. Phelan then shot Michelle after she attempted to escape his grip.
  • After being stabbed in the chest by Anna and collapsing onto the ground, he was unwilling to let Anna settle in peace and wanted to get one over her one last time by plunging the knife out of his chest, henceforth ensuring that Anna would likely be implicated to have deliberately killed him. He also threatened Michelle with the idea of her being jailed when she insisted that she'd say that Anna stabbed him in self-defense.
  • His death is played greatly for karma and satisfaction for how slow and painful it is, as well as his archenemy Anna gloating about her ultimate victory over him, as well as how she'll go on to meet her grandson for the first time and put Phelan behind her for good.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • He has a few Pet the Dog moments that were never subverted:
    • He helped Carla Connor get an ambulance after witnessing her being knocked unconscious for attempting to stop a getaway robbery.
    • When he found out from Kevin's young son Jack that Anna fell down a flight of stairs, Phelan rushed in to help Anna and prevent Jack from being traumatized.
    • He saved Summer Spellman from harassment by a stalking paedophile.
  • When he shot Nicola by mistake, he was worried that she might die, and briefly risked his opportunity to escape by barging into Robert and Michelle's wedding ceremony and begging for people to help her.
    • However, this is partially subverted by how after being fatally stabbed by Anna shortly afterwards, he only expressed interest in the idea of her and Michelle being punished for his death.
