“ | The Overlook was having one hell of a good time. There was a little boy to terrorize, a man and his woman to set one against the other, and if it played its cards right they could end up flitting through the Overlook’s halls like insubstantial shades in a Shirley Jackson novel, whatever walked in Hill House walked alone, but you wouldn’t be alone in the Overlook, oh no, there would be plenty of company here. | „ |
~ The Overlook Hotel showing its sadistic nature. |
The Overlook Hotel is the main antagonist of Stephen Kings 1977 novel The Shining and its 1997 television adaptation, the posthumous overarching antagonist of the 2013 novel Doctor Sleep, and a minor antagonist in the 2021 novel Billy Summers. It is a malevolent entity who wants the Shining power of Danny Torrance.
In the miniseries, its exterior and interior were portrayed by The Stanley Hotel, which served as the inspiration for its exterior appearance in the books.
Its Evil Ranking[]
What Makes It Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- While at first, it may seem like a simple haunted hotel, it is revealed that the Overlook is actually a sentient being, hellbent on causing destruction for self-serving reasons.
- Due to its influence, it was responsible for multiple suicides and gangland hits since it was built in 1909.
- It psychologically tortured Delbert Grady and eventually possessed him in order to brutally kill his wife and daughters. Delbert committed suicide immediately after this.
- It constantly tormented Jack Torrance, his wife Wendy, and his son Danny while they were isolated in the hotel throughout the winter period by showing them its past crimes.
- Upon learning that Danny had the power of the Shining, the hotel used the facade of Delbert Grady to psychologically torture Jack into murdering his family, intending to claim Danny's psychic power for itself in his death. In this respect, it was responsible for turning Jack insane and causing him to attempt murdering Wendy and Danny.
- The hotel later took direct control of Jack's body to try and murder his family and Dick Halloran, despite knowing that Jack didn't want to hurt them.
- It is shown to be extremely sadistic, enjoying Jack's suffering as it forced him to try and murder his wife and son.
- Even after Jack died and the hotel burned down, it had a lifelong effect on Danny, as he became deeply traumatized due to the events that happened when he was a child.
- While it may seem that the hotel fails the Heinous Standards to the Crimson King and It at first, both of whom have killed billions of lives, the Overlook Hotel only has power over things in its general vicinity, so it stands out due to its shockingly lower resources compared to the other villains in the Stephen King multiverse.
- Overall, the hotel has no redeeming qualities and is nothing but a sadistic entity that tortures and kills people just so it can become more powerful.
What Prevents It from Being Pure Evil?[]
- It is stated that the Overlook Hotel was composed of negative influence from a history of deaths, giving it moral agency issues. Its history of crime caused by the negativity is also confirmed, unlike the 1980 film adaptation and 2019 sequel.
Trivia[]
- The Overlook Hotel is one of two villains in The Shining duology to be Near Pure Evil, the other being Rose the Hat.
