~ Saddler's hallucination to Leon "welcoming" him into the cult |
“ | Saddler: (reveals himself to Leon and Ashley as they examine dormant plaga eggs within a huge amber-like casing) Prostrate yourself. This is our Holy Body. Our divine providence! And soon... such a profound blessing for all... las plagas! (lets one of his masked acolytes removing his hood to reveal carapaces on where his hair should be) Welcome, my children. I am Osmund Saddler, the speaker for our Lord. Leon: Tell someone who gives a ****. (fires his gun at Saddler's left eye) Saddler: Foolish lambs. Why do you deny grace? (subdues Leon to his knees via. telepathic command to plaga inside him in retaliation while regenerating his wounded eye at the same time) Now, abandon your body! Obey. Obey the voice of our Lord. (telepathically commands Ashley's plaga, prompting her to walk towards his side) Ashley: No... No! (involuntarily grabs Leon's fallen handgun) Stop! No! (involuntarily aims the gun at its owner before begins shooting, her willpower results her shooting one of Saddler's masked acolytes instead) Saddler: Sweet child, do not resist! (Ashley involuntarily shoots the second acolyte with a groan before seemingly give in only for the gun jammed) Pray, forgive these wicked sinners. My faithful disciple shall deliver to you your... penance. Now child, you need not to be afraid. Submit your body and release yourself from fear! (departs with Ashley and his remaining acolytes from the storage) Leon: (now his growing plaga releases its hold over him, Leon retrieves his fallen gun and fixes it before giving chase) Saddler, you bastard! |

~ Leon and Ashley's first proper encounter with Saddler in the remake. |
Lord Osmund Saddler is the leader of the religious cult Los Iluminados and the main antagonist of Resident Evil 4 remake.
He is the 15th descendant and heir of Saddler family, which founded the Los Illuminados cult. The family in question and other founding families of Los Iluminados were forced to flee Valdelobos following the crusade of Count Gregorio of the Salazar family against pagan beliefs, including said cult for worshipping Las Plagas, though it didn't deter them and the rest of survivors from biding their time for their future return. As of modern day, Osmund Saddler was the last of his kind and more than determined to finish what his predecessors started.
He was voiced by Christopher Jane in English and Hōchū Ōtsuka in Japanese.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- Aimed to bring forth the era of peace via Las Plagas infestation at the cost of one's free will and becoming monsters extends to entire world instead of just in Valdelobos and the surrounding regions only hence the reason he set out to amass more than enough resources to attain such goal.
- It's even implied that he went study abroad to gain a further understanding of what Las Plagas capable of more than he and his predecessors already knew.
- Manipulated the last descendant of the Salazar family, Ramon Salazar, into releasing Plagas his family sealed long ago and safeguarded for centuries. It must be noted that he had easier time on persuading Ramon because the young Salazar had embraced Los Illuminados' beliefs by the time of their first meeting.
- He and Salazar hired many people from nearby village to mine out Plagas, indirectly exposing them to awakened parasites' spores which subsequently seized complete control over their very being.
- Hired the same former Umbrella research team who responsible for Nemesis' development to conduct experimentations to further perfect rejuvenated Plagas and related B.O.W.s, including more symbiotic Dominant species Plaga, which allows the host to retain their sense of self while giving them superhuman powers.
- "Baptized" the rest of locals in Valdelobos by injecting them with their respective Plaga egg, reducing them into monstrous shadows of their former selves and monstrous devotees of Los Iluminados' faith.
- To make matter worse, in addition of the village chief Bitorez Mendez changed into Saddler's ruthless confidant as much as Ramon Salazar cemented by receiving his very own Dominant species Plaga, children in Valdelobos ended up dying due to their bodies too frail to handle their respective Plaga.
- Ordered his new disciple, Jack Krauser, to kidnap the daughter of president of United States Ashley Graham, which he succeeded.
- Infected Ashley with a Plaga in a bid to forcibly convert her into Los Iluminados' beliefs and both subsequently and discreetly instructed her to both spread the cult's faith and Plagas throughout United States and the rest of the world starting from her father.
- Ordered the capture of Luis Sera for both defecting to Ada Wong and attempting to pass the latter the sample of unique precursor to Dominant species Plaga which the scientist discovered more potent than Saddler's own.
- He also had the defector locked away and left suffocated for both his troubles and disposing his own Plaga.
- Upon learning Leon S. Kennedy's arrival at Valdelobos and search for Ashley, he wasted no time to order Bitorez and Ganados in the village to deal the intruder. Whereas two police officers who accompanied the agent got killed (one had his throat slit and subsequently fed to Del Lago — Los Illuminados' surviving earliest B.O.W. — while another ritualistically burnt at the stake in the center of the village), Leon himself was injected with a Plaga egg by Bitorez himself upon seeing him attempting to free Luis Sera because of the advantage he would likely provide as a Plaga infectee under Los Illuminados' cause.
- Rallied multiple Ganados to capture Leon, Ashley, and Luis.
- Telepathically tormented Ashley and Leon through the link between his Dominant species Plaga and their respective parasite, stating that they would become his disciples once their Plagas matured and stripped them of their free will by the dawn.
- Temporarily mind-controlled Ashley twice via:
- The first time being at Salazar's castle where he had her stealing Leon's knife and stabbing its owner to no avail. He then pointed the weapon against her throat and threatened to make her kill herself should he come any closer, distracting the two from a wall which soon separated them. Turned out Ashley was aware with what had transpired and and ashamed to the point of running away.
- The next instance was when he, Ashley, and Leon met in person at The Island. This time, he restrained Leon by having his Plaga painfully keeping him in check while ordering Ashley's to steal the agent's gun and shoot him with it.
- Though she eventually fell under Saddler's control as before, Ashley fared better than the last time, wasting the gun's ammo on his masked servants and jammed it at critical moments.
- Has Krauser kill Luis Sera by stabbing him in the back when the scientist became too much of a major problem. He also ordered Krauser to either do the same to Leon or stall the latter long enough for his Plaga to eventually take over.
- Summons a swarm of Novistadors to dispatch Mike's armed helicopter to kill him. He then dispatches the same swarm to deal Leon both afterwards and later, in their final battle.
- Attempted to subdue Leon through a telepathic command on his growing Plaga when he attempts to take Ashley away in the Sanctuary knowing the parasite would take over soon only to be stopped by Ada at the last moments.
- After subduing Ada, he attempts to deter Leon who carries the unconscious Ashley from reaching the lab containing the UV machine devised to purge Plaga from its host via. radiation treatment to no avail via. hallucinations. When that failed, he decides to use the incapacitated Ada as a bait.
- Outraged to see Leon had indeed managed to purge his own Plaga, he ambushes the former once he reached Ada only for the latter barraged him with gunfire.
- Blocking their assaults, he goes all out by unveiling his mutated form against the former, even summoning the same Novistador swarm he used to kill Mike prior and assuming a Uroboros Aheri-esque second form when his current one not enough.
- Makes one final attempt on Leon's life when what remained of his human form got exposed by a rocket launcher Ada gave to the agent with his ceremonial staff only for the former snatched the weapon and impaled its owner's mouth eye, finally killing him.
- Escaping the island, Leon and Ashley discover one more reason to reject Saddler's dream to establish a utopia free of chaos, suffering and destruction via. Las Plagas and stressing unbearable price of such goal in addition of loss of free will and needless deaths; in the event of the violent or sudden death of every single host of Dominant species Plaga (Saddler himself included), the ensuing shock to the hivemind would immediately cripple all Subordinate species Plagas under their command.
- Rather than expected resistance, the two are horror-struck by the sight of Ganados around them suffering agonizing seizure which could potentially kill their respective host, though neither Leon or Ashley wanted to find out due to the island is about to be destroyed via. Ada's explosives.
- If the remake continuity aligns with the rest of the franchise, his ill-fated attempt to release Plaga upon the world brought dire consequences:
- In Resident Evil 5, as Albert Wesker & Excella Gionne developed more effective Type 2 and Type 3 Plagas and then released upon Kijuju populace Ndipaya tribe as their testing grounds with help of black market dealer Ricardo Irving, killing and infecting many into Majinis.
- In Resident Evil: Damnation, Plagas similarly made their way into the possession of President Sveltana Belikova who then developed newer yet flawed Plaga Type 4 in the attempt to discreetly crush the rebels during the civil war at Eastern Slav Republic.
- In the sequel film Resident Evil: Vendetta Glenn Arias collaborated with remnants of Los Iluminados to develop A-Virus with some Plaga genes into it to create new variant of zombies which can better differentiate friend and foe before unleashing it upon New York City turning 50% of its population into zombies. Had it not for Rebecca Chambers' success in creating the antivirus which later perfected to restore the infected, he would've succeeded in creating a devastating outbreak.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- In stark contrast to his 2005 iteration, Saddler is a genuine Well-Intentioned Extremist whose desire to establish a utopia free of chaos, suffering and destruction through Las Plagas. That said, methods involved included needless killing and worse, the price creating such utopia via. such parasitic organism and embracing the faith of Los Iluminados was the loss/degeneration of one's free will. Understandably, neither Luis Sera nor Leon approved him.
- The price of powers provided by Dominant Species Plaga as revealed in research notes Leon and Ashley discovered was personality corruption; the host of the parasite becomes so obsessed with carrying out their goals and lose any sense of reason despite maintaining their sense of self. Saddler was no exception of this rule, as his Dominant Species Plaga messed with his moral agency all along.
- He was genuinely affable towards Leon & Ashley and was willing to let them join the cult and accept the Plaga, only really dropping it once he finds out they got rid of their parasites which he deemed the best gift he can offer.
Trivia[]
- Only the Remake Version of Saddler is considered NPE due to his original version lacking the three mitigating factors.
