Norma Bates is the overarching antagonist of Robert Bloch's 1959 novel Psycho and the 1960 film adaptation of the same name. She is a sexually abusive deviant whose actions turned her son Norman Bates into a mentally ill killer.

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- She would sexually arouse her son Norman as a child and then physically punish him for getting aroused.
- She hypocritically says to Norman that all girls except herself are lustful sinners who want nothing but to have sex with him, despite her having a pedophilic and incestuous desire for him.
- It is also strongly implied that she frequently sexually violated her son as a way to “punish” him for feeling desires for other woman and a way to get sadistically aroused herself.
- Not only does such enormity emphasize her hypocrisy, but also makes her a pedophile. It’s also worthy to note the uniqueness of both points in regards to her crimes for the story.
- She lets her alcoholic lover, Chet Rudolph, to physically abuse Norman as well.
- Her and her lover's actions eventually lead to them both getting killed by Norman, which would result in the creation of Norman's split personality which he calls "Mother". Due to this, it could be said that Norma is responsible for all the murders in Psycho.
- In the end, Norma Bates was responsible for turning Norman from an innocent child to a dissociative killer who doesn't even realize that he is doing anything wrong, all for her pedophilic and lustful desires.
What Prevents Her from Being Pure Evil?[]
- Despite her unhealthy and sexually abusive relationship with him, Norma does truly care about her son Norman, as she has a tendency to comfort him and try to make him feel better sometimes after she has sexually abused him.
