Niles is the overarching antagonist of the Australian comedy action web-series SMG4.
He serves as the unseen overarching antagonist of the Classic Era, the main antagonist of the Modern Era and the overarching antagonist of the Showgrounds Era.
He was an imperfect meme guardian created by the God Box to assist SuperMemeGuardian0 and their avatar Fred in maintaining their domain. However, obsessed with achieving power and perfection, he eventually killed Fred and fused with SMG0, becoming Zero, a malevolent virus which travels across the multiverse to destroy different universes, with Niles as the dominant consciousness. He is also the archenemy of Melony, SMG1 and SMG2.
He was voiced by Michael Kovach as Niles, who also voiced SMG0 and Fred. As Zero, his eldritch form, he mainly used sound clips from the Predator. As Ax0l, he was voiced by Kevin Lerdwichagul. During the WOTFI 2021 Rap Battle, he was voiced by Matthew Guerra. As Mel0ny, he was voiced by Wolfychu.

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]
- While originally helping and assisting SMG0 and Fred with their universe, his intentions became far more malicious as turned into a power-hungry perfectionist.
- He made a deal with the God Box to acquire eldritch powers and caused the destruction of his universe, killing Fred in the process, and forcibly fused with SMG0, which made him assume his virus form, Eldritch Zero. While Fred's death did seem to shock him, this was due to it making him realize that his plan to make his universe perfect backfired rather than out of sincere care for him. Furthermore, he quickly got over it like it was nothing as he decided that he would make a new and perfect universe.
- Although he had moments that were comedic and entertaining such as singing "you spin me right around" for example, they were very minor as he is still shown that he's to be taken completely seriously, and his crimes well played for horror.
- Went on and destroyed countless universes by brutally killing their avatars, in order to steal the souls of everyone inside in an attempt to create a whole new universe while presumably killing incalculable people in the process.
- An onscreen example is when he destroyed SMG1 and SMG2’s universe by killing their Avatar, Spudnick. This also damaged SMG1 and SMG2's forms. What makes this even worse is that Spudnick was also a child, making Niles guilty of child murder.
- While he says "HELP..." when he did the deed, it was presumably to mock SMG1 and SMG2. Although this can be seen as him expressing remorse over what he is about to do, considering that he wiped out multiple other universes, this is most likely not the case as he had no real reason to do such an act. It could also be entirely possible that this was SMG0 crying for help instead of Niles himself.
- An onscreen example is when he destroyed SMG1 and SMG2’s universe by killing their Avatar, Spudnick. This also damaged SMG1 and SMG2's forms. What makes this even worse is that Spudnick was also a child, making Niles guilty of child murder.
- Used the arm of his Eldritch form to kidnap and steal the souls of several Mario recolors in order to find Mario for the next 10 years.
- Closed up SMG3’s realm, which caused the corruption of SMG3's dead memes.
- Stole the souls of X and FM.
- Kidnapped countless Mario recolors after inhabiting a cathedral in the Dark Web, reaping their souls and turning them into lifeless husks. To make this even worse, he used their bodies as pawns in order to kill SMG4's allies after they came to stop him.
- He caused SMG3’s crash landing in the Mushroom Kingdom since he causes a beam to be fired that causes his USB drive to be teleported there when it was supposed to crash into the Internet Graveyard.
- This makes Niles responsible for a lot of the events of the series, since this leads to the SMG3's rivalry with SMG4, and thus, him turning evil.
- What's more is that his actions indirectly led to SMG4's Guardian Pod being teleported to the Mushroom Kingdom, where it zapped Mario and turned him into the idiotic and troublesome person he is now, meaning Mario would've remained the way he's supposed to be if it weren't for Niles. This also makes him indirectly responsible for the events of the Lawsuit Arc as well, as Lawyer Kong (and by extension, Nintendo), ended up making a firewall to keep non-Nintendo characters out of the Mushroom Kingdom, as well as the signing of the DMCA, resulting in the temporary genocide of all non-Nintendo characters, including children.
- It also possible that he's the reason why SMG4 and SMG3 forgot their pasts.
- It’s implied he may be responsible for the creation of Shadow Meggy, as Corrupted Mario has a similar color palette to her, and we saw shadow versions of some characters in SMG4's mind in "SMG4 Goes Insane".
- After capturing Mario for the first time, he forced him to witness the destruction of SMG1 and SMG2's universe, while also trying to turn him into his own avatar to begin his ultimate goal which cause SMG3 and SMG4 having physical pain.
- His actions temporarily drove SMG4 mad after the events of the Anniversary Special.
- To make this even worse, it is implied that Niles may have directly driven SMG4 mad himself, as his eye appears behind the crowd tormenting him inside of his mind.
- Using his eye drone, he kidnapped E. Gad and forced him, or he will be killed with a knife to create imperfect memes in an attempt to kidnap Mario and kill SMG4 and Axol.
- He captured and permanently possessed Axol after pulling him into his Guardian Pod, using his body as his new host, mutating it in several ways after taking full control becoming Ax0l, and later kidnapped Mario.
- After capturing Mario, SMG4, and SMG3, he traps them in SMG3's USB and tortures them by putting them into a VR Simulation.
- It is also revealed that at some point in time, Niles put SMG1 and SMG2 through the same horrible process.
- Started draining many souls in the Mushroom Kingdom and forcibly created a dark version of Mario called Mari0, with hopes in creating a new Avatar through him.
- He mocks Melony for refusing to kill him because he was in Axol's body and would kill him as well.
- He tried to crush SMG1 and SMG2 to death, only failing to do so as SMG3 and SMG4 saved them using their meme powers.
- After turning Mario into his avatar, he begins to use all meme energy in the SMG4 universe to destroy it and rebuild a new one for himself, claiming it to be nice and peaceful at first, only to then be called out by SMG1 for creating anything but that. Later on, his words only imply he was truly just creating a world of despair and sadness.
- Even if his world could be really peaceful, his goal is more selfish than well-intentioned because he was just trying to make his own personal heaven. Him creating the world out of despair and sadness won't justify his actions either.
- During the WOTFI 2021 battle, he attempted to use Mari0 in order to kill his friends.
- It's implied he may have been responsible for the corruption of several memes, as he used them in his final battle against SMG4 and his friends.
- Overall, because he was bound to Axol and could not let go of him, Melony had no other choice other than killing him in order to stop Niles' terror and have him presumably being killed. This makes him responsible for Axol's death, which was the first death of a major protagonist in the series.
- In To Become A God, Axol's death seems to still haunt Melony, as she is afraid she'll lose her other friends. Even with Eldritch Zero defeated, his influence still has an effect on the series.
- After the destruction of Zero happened, Niles and SMG0 got separated, and the former attached himself to Melony’s mind and pretended to befriend her, while secretly manipulating her for his own gains.
- It is implied that he was controlling Melony as Fierce Deity Melony to cause destruction upon Mushroom City when Melony was unconscious and not in control in To Become A God.
- Had the Box Cult Leader kidnap many Omnia Academy students and perform a ritual in order to summon a way to access the God Box.
- In Absolute Betrayal, it is revealed that Niles was Eldritch Zero himself all along, and he possesses Melony to use her powers to help him reach the Great Beyond. Although he seemed to be rather affable towards Melony as Niles, it was likely a facade.
- Earlier in the episode, he smiles at the end of his line: "Ok, yeah, take a rest! You've earned it.", what implies that it isn't a facade. However, it still doesn't make him protective, affable or remorseful as he was only using Melony for his needs, and it seems that he didn't change his opinion about anyone else.
- Manipulated the power of Melony for various purposes including various murders of Goombas for example.
- Advised Melony to kill Goomba from God Box Club, despite the fact he wasn't very dangerous.
- While he gave the Box Club Leader a pizza box to play with, it was only so he'd stop annoying him, not out of any care.
- Showed only mild annoyance towards the Cult Leader’s death, simply calling him an idiot, proving that he viewed him as nothing more than a pawn.
- Attempted to murder SMG4 and SMG3 while inside the God Box.
- While Melony was inside her subconscious, Niles haunted her with nightmarish creatures and took the form of Ax0l to insult and blame Melony for his death and attempts to choke her to death, even tearing apart her drawing of her with Axol as a means to taunt her.
- Once more forcibly fused with SMG0 in order to assume his virus form again.
- During the final battle in REVELATIONS, he attacked Melony and eventually swallowed her whole, which temporarily killed her, and proceeded to smile sadistically at Mario, SMG4 and SMG3.
- Despite SMG0’s protests and begging, Niles refused to back down and attempts to murder the group as one last act of spite before death.
- When SMG0 told him to let their enemies live, Niles punched him after he called him a "failure".
- While he does seem loyal to the God Box, it was merely an obsessive form of fanaticism rather than genuine respect.
- Although there was something wrong with him and he was stated to be imperfect upon being created, it doesn't excuse his actions are they are far too heinous to even sympathize with his past, especially when he helped SMG0 restore their friends to their normal state and his actions of obtaining eldritch powers from the God Box got Fred killed, destroyed his and SMG0's universe. Even Melony called him out for what he did to SMG0 and says that she wouldn't forgive him.
- Regardless, he's still shown to contain moral agencies as it mostly felt like he was suffering from side effects of the God Box due to being it's creation rather than having no control over his heinous actions.
- Overall, he is an egotistical and power-hungry monster who (while caring for him) abused SMG0 and was willing to sacrifice countless universes in order to create his so-called perfect universe. Even despite giving up on his ambition after being convinced by SMG0, he doesn't show any remorse for his crimes and only wanted to see Fred in the afterlife, so he technically isn't fully redeemed.
- Even after his death, his heinous atrocities still continue to influence and haunt the series, as he's responsible for many deaths and tragedies that repeatedly occur in the series, both directly and indirectly.
- Overall, he is easily the most heinous villain in the entire series, having destroyed countless universes and attempting to destroy the SMG4 universe just so he can create his own perfect one, a feat only even slightly reached by the Box Club Leader.
What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]
- He showed to have an initially twisted, but ultimately very genuine friendship and care for both SMG0 and Fred, despite indirectly causing the death of the latter, as he always saw them as his best friends and was horrified when he accidentally killed Fred. He simply wanted to make a universe for himself and SMG0, which was played as a genuine and sympathetic moment, and was willing to die so that they could find peace and was genuinely happy at the thought of being able to meet Fred in the afterlife.
- His death was played for sympathy, as he began to cry about how he and SMG0 were supposed to be together in their perfect universe before SMG0 comforts him, saying that being together is enough, causing the two make peace with each other and walk off into the afterlife to meet Fred.
Trivia[]
- As of the episode "SMG4: MAR10 DAY" and the livestream and announcement that followed it, a popular fan theory is that Niles drove SMG4 into going insane trying to make his video perfect. If this were true, it would make Niles worse, but even more so, it would prove that his arc isn't over after all. However, by the time "SMG4 Movie: IT'S GOTTA BE PERFECT” was released, it was revealed that Mr. Puzzles' demonic keyboard he created was the source of SMG4 going mad.
